Raducanu ready for ‘fact-finding match' against Sabalenka at Cincinnati Open

The Guardian6 days ago
Emma Raducanu has underlined her excitement before what she describes as a 'fact-finding match' against the world No 1, Aryna Sabalenka, as they prepare to battle in the third round of the Cincinnati Open on Monday.
'It's always exciting for a player like me to play the very top, because it's like a fact-finding match,' Raducanu said. 'You see where you are in comparison to the top. I also think form fluctuates so much on the day. You can lose two and one [6-2, 6-1] one day, you can win or you can make it close the next day, and it can be down to a few points. So I'm excited.'
It will be Raducanu's first significant match since starting work with her new coach, Francisco Roig, last week in Cincinnati.
Last month she played one of her best matches against a top player in making life difficult for Sabalenka at Wimbledon in two tight sets. After serving for the first set and then later holding a set point against the Belarusian, Raducanu led 4-1 in the second set before losing 7-6 (6), 6-4.
'She played incredible tennis,' Sabalenka said of the British player after her straight-sets win against Marketa Vondrousova on Saturday night. 'I'm super happy to see her mentally and physically back, and definitely gonna be back in the top 10 very soon. She challenged me that much, and I like to accept tough challenges, so I'm super excited about facing her on the hard courts.'
Raducanu gave an honest response when asked if she left Centre Court at Wimbledon determined to have another crack at Sabalenka as soon as possible.
'I would say I thought I'd love to have another crack at that on grass, like tomorrow,' she said, laughing. 'But I know, and I'm honestly reasonable enough, and, I guess, honest enough in myself to know that different surfaces favour different people and where my game is at in comparison. I think the grass gave me a bit of an advantage but we'll see how it goes.'
Raducanu has enjoyed a positive run of form in recent months while training and competing consistently on the tour and she could be seeded for the US Open. However, while she has performed well in the matches she has been favoured to win, the lessons from most of her previous encounters against the top players have been that her general level has simply not been good enough.
In their first few days working together, Raducanu and Roig will at least get a clear understanding of exactly where she stands in comparison to the very best.
On Sunday, Cameron Norrie struggled badly in 33C (91F) heat and humid conditions as he lost 6-4, 6-3 against Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round.
After trailing the 37-year-old Spaniard by an early break, Norrie had appeared to be finding his way when he suddenly began to feel sick. Despite fighting hard until the end, he spent the rest of the match clutching his chest and barely able to move on the court: '[In the] 5-4 game I started to feel like I wanted to throw up,' said Norrie. 'Maybe it's the heat, I don't know. I went to the bathroom and threw everything up after the first set and I was still not feeling good. And I had no energy in the second set.'

Seeded 32nd in Cincinnati, Norrie has been in great form over the past few months, following up his fourth round finish at the French Open with a quarter-final run at Wimbledon. Norrie had hoped to maintain his momentum on the North American hard courts, his favourite surface, but he has instead struggled in each tournament. Norrie's physicality is usually one of his biggest strengths, which has made these results even more frustrating.
'At this point, I don't know what to say,' said Norrie. 'We're trying everything. We're using the ice. We're changing shirts and changing grips all the time. I don't think it's that hot, like it's hot but it's not crazy. I'm just not sure why my body is not letting me play. It must be mental too, because I'm really good in the heat, and I have such high expectations for myself to do well in the heat. So I guess maybe I need to lower those expectations now.'
In his first match since losing in the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner last month, the men's No 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz held firm in the decisive moments against Damir Dzumhur despite a turbulent performance to reach the third round in Cincinnati with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win. Coco Gauff, the women's No 2 seed, eased into the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wang Xinyu.

Orioles call up No. 3 prospect Dylan Beavers for MLB debut

August 16 - The Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of outfielder Dylan Beavers, their No. 3 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, on Saturday. He is expected to make his major league debut Saturday night when the Orioles meet the Astros in Houston. Baltimore selected the 6-foot-5 Beavers with the No. 33 overall pick of the 2022 MLB Draft. The left-handed batter has appeared in 94 games this season at Triple-A Norfolk and has a slash line of .304/.420/.515/.935. He has 104 hits, 78 runs, 18 homers, 51 RBIs and 23 steals. Overall, he has appeared in 361 games over four minor league seasons, with a career average of .278, 44 homers, 180 RBIs and 87 stolen bases. Beavers, who turned 24 on Monday, played three collegiate seasons at Cal. He can play all three outfield positions. In a corresponding move, the Orioles designated outfielder Greg Allen for assignment. The Orioles signed Allen, 32, last week after the Chicago Cubs released him. He was hitless in 14 at-bats. --Field Level Media

Browns rookie QB Dillon Gabriel to start vs. Eagles

August 16 - Rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel will start for the Cleveland Browns in Saturday's preseason game at Philadelphia, the team announced. Drafted in the third round in April, Gabriel missed the preseason opener with hamstring tightness and returned to practice on Monday. Fellow rookie signal-caller Shedeur Sanders, who threw two touchdown passes in the Aug. 8 preseason opener at Carolina, will not play against the Eagles due to an oblique injury. "When it's a quarterback, you kind of need that muscle to throw," head coach Kevin Stefanski said of Sanders. "So unfortunately, (it's) going to put him down for a little bit here. We'll treat it day to day and see how he responds. But want to be smart because he's a thrower, so you can't push that thing." Stefanski said veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, 40, is healthy but will not play for the second consecutive week. With Kenny Pickett working his way back from a hamstring injury and Deshaun Watson likely out for the year with an Achilles injury, that leaves only Gabriel and Tyler Huntley available to take snaps in Philadelphia. Gabriel was selected 94th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft after putting up big numbers at three college stops: UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon. Still on the board 50 picks later, the Browns chose Sanders to end a well-publicized draft weekend crash from projections of a top-50 draft rating. Gabriel, 24, said earlier this week that he won't overthink it if he starts against the reigning Super Bowl champions. "I try to just stay in the moment. I'll look forward to that moment once it comes and be right where my feet are," Gabriel said. "The best competitors know how to stay present and be themselves by competing at a high level one play at a time." Gabriel completed 65.2 percent of his passes for 18,722 yards with 155 touchdowns and 32 interceptions across 64 games in college from 2019-24. He rushed for 1,209 yards and 33 scores. --Field Level Media

Bryson Dechambeau takes bitter swipe at the PGA Tour after being banned from pre-Ryder Cup tournament

Bryson DeChambeau has taken a bitter swipe at the PGA Tour after being blocked from playing in a crucial Ryder Cup warm-up event. The LIV Golf star, who's all but guaranteed a spot on Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup squad, expressed frustration Friday over the ongoing restrictions placed on players who defected to the Saudi-backed breakaway league. It comes as U.S. captain Bradley eyes the PGA Tour's Procore Championship, scheduled this autumn in Napa, California, as an ideal opportunity to get his team some live tournament reps. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler confirmed that he intends to play, with many of his likely teammates also expected to tee it up in support of Bradley's plan. DeChambeau, however, remains ineligible due to his PGA Tour suspension. 'That's up to the Tour and their decision to make,' DeChambeau told Sports Illustrated after carding a 4-under 67 in the opening round of LIV Golf Indianapolis. 'It's on them if they don't let us become together as a team and play.' The comments come amid tensions between the breakaway LIV contingent and the PGA Tour, which has suspended players like DeChambeau since defecting in 2022. Despite ongoing merger talks and broader calls for unity across the sport, the Tour has shown no sign of softening its stance - even with the Ryder Cup just weeks away. DeChambeau would require a sponsor's exemption to compete in the event, but according to a PGA Tour spokesperson, that won't matter. They told the outlet that the two-time US Open champion 'is not eligible for PGA Tour competition.' The Procore Championship, played in the five-week gap between the PGA Tour season and the LIV schedule ending, has been identified by Bradley as an ideal opportunity to get his players in sync ahead of the biennial clash with Europe. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said Wednesday he plans to play, and several other likely Ryder Cup selections are expected to join him in Napa in a show of unity and preparation. That leaves DeChambeau, one of the in-form Americans this season and a confirmed part of Bradley's Ryder Cup plans, on the outside looking in. While DeChambeau has made no official request to play, Bradley's agent Brett Falkoff told SI that the 30-year-old 'plans to participate in every team gathering that he is permitted to attend.' But unless something changes fast, he could be the only American team member not competing in the Procore tune-up - a glaring omission in an otherwise united front. The PGA Tour's ongoing hardline stance on LIV players continues to ripple through professional golf - and now, potentially, through America's Ryder Cup campaign. Whether that costs Team USA on home soil remains to be seen. But for DeChambeau, the damage may already be done.
