Orioles call up No. 3 prospect Dylan Beavers for MLB debut

Reuters7 hours ago
August 16 - The Baltimore Orioles selected the contract of outfielder Dylan Beavers, their No. 3 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, on Saturday.
He is expected to make his major league debut Saturday night when the Orioles meet the Astros in Houston.
Baltimore selected the 6-foot-5 Beavers with the No. 33 overall pick of the 2022 MLB Draft. The left-handed batter has appeared in 94 games this season at Triple-A Norfolk and has a slash line of .304/.420/.515/.935. He has 104 hits, 78 runs, 18 homers, 51 RBIs and 23 steals.
Overall, he has appeared in 361 games over four minor league seasons, with a career average of .278, 44 homers, 180 RBIs and 87 stolen bases.
Beavers, who turned 24 on Monday, played three collegiate seasons at Cal. He can play all three outfield positions.
In a corresponding move, the Orioles designated outfielder Greg Allen for assignment.
The Orioles signed Allen, 32, last week after the Chicago Cubs released him. He was hitless in 14 at-bats.

Nolan McLean earns first MLB victory as Mets edge Mariners

August 16 - Nolan McLean pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings to earn a victory in his major league debut as the New York Mets topped the visiting Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Saturday. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso had run-scoring doubles for the Mets, who snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their past 17 games. Seattle's Eugenio Suarez broke up the shutout bid with a solo shot to left field with one out in the ninth. McLean, a right-hander who was a third-round pick out of Oklahoma State in 2023, allowed just two hits -- a two-out single by Cal Raleigh in the third and a leadoff single by Dominic Canzone in the fifth. McLean walked four and struck out eight. Mets closer Edwin Diaz, a former Mariner, worked the final two innings for his 24th save of the season. McLean, who was a two-way player until focusing exclusively on pitching this season, got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third with a highlight-reel defensive play. After walking J.P. Crawford and Cole Young to open the third, Raleigh lined a single to right to load the bases. Julio Rodriguez hit a hard one-hopper up the middle that McLean reached behind his back to snare, then threw to second base to start an inning-ending double play. Mariners starter Bryan Woo (10-7) gave up one run on six hits over six innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts. The game's first run came in the third. Brett Baty, the No. 9 hitter in the Mets' lineup, grounded a single to right just out of the reach of diving second baseman Young, and Lindor followed with a double into the right-field corner, with Baty scoring from first. The Mets tacked on two runs in the seventh, as Baty led off with a single to right off reliever Caleb Ferguson and stole second. Baty advanced to third on Lindor's single to left and scored on Juan Soto's sacrifice fly to center. Lindor was thrown out at the plate by Randy Arozarena on Brandon Nimmo's single to left. Alonso greeted reliever Carlos Vargas with a double down the left-field line to score Nimmo. The teams will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at the annual MLB Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa. --Field Level Media

Patrick Mahomes reveals secret ingredient that makes his marriage to wife Brittany work

has claimed his wife Brittany is 'just as competitive' as him as he gushed about his wife in a new interview. While the Chiefs quarterback and three-time Super Bowl winner has had a historic start to his NFL career, Brittany was formerly an athlete in her own right as well as the pair attended Whitehouse High School together. The now mom-of-three starred as a soccer player at the Texas school and later went on to play collegiately at the University of Texas at Tyler. She even played professionally for one season in Iceland. And while her soccer (playing) career is now over, her husband recognizes that their shared competitiveness is a major boon for their marriage. 'There's no better feeling than having someone by your side who is just as competitive as you and supports you in everything you do,' the quarterback told People. He added of their time together in high school: 'Whether it was her in soccer or me in football or baseball, we both understood the level of commitment it takes.' Aside from raising their three children together, Brittany and Patrick have also teamed up as co-owners of NWSL team the KC Current, who debuted last March. The couple welcomed their most recent child, Golden Raye, back in January, and Patrick recently beamed about how his wife handled the pregnancy of the couple's second daughter. 'Brittany crushed it. I was watching playoff games the entire day. She went to labor after one game,' Patrick Mahomes recalled in a clip of new ESPN documentary 'The Kingdom' which aired on the latest episode of 'Good Morning America.' 'Baby was here before the next game, so I didn't even miss a playoff game. So, she is as locked in as I am as far as football goes.' The couple welcomed their first child, Sterling Skye, in 2021 before their son, Patrick III ('Bronze') was born the following year. Brittany and Patrick also got married in March 2022 after his Chiefs lost to the Bengals in the AFC Championship. Back in July, the family-of-five enjoyed some time together in Mexico ahead of yet another grueling NFL season. In one photo, a beaming Mahomes sat alongside his wife and their children on the couch of their vacation home in one of the pictures and held Golden Raye up for the photo. In another, the Chiefs passer was seen holding hands with Bronze as they walked down a path on the holiday resort. Mahomes is now back training with the Chiefs as they prepare for their first game of the season on September 5. He played sparingly in Kansas City's preseason opener against the Cardinals last week, and did not appear against the Seahawks on Friday.

Watch: Bob MacIntyre sinks 40ft putt to send Ryder Cup message to US hecklers

First Bob MacIntyre faced down the US hecklers who were no doubt warming up their dimwitted jousts for next month's Ryder Cup. And then the Scot holed a 40-footer on the last to signal to Scottie Scheffler that he will not simply be swept aside for a £2.7m first prize. Exclamation on 18! A 41-foot birdie on the last gives @robert1lefty a four-shot lead heading into Sunday. — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 16, 2025 Luke Donald would have loved watching this third round of the BMW Championship, the penultimate event in the PGA Tour's season-closing FedEx Cup. There was MacIntyre, the 29-year-old from Oban, refusing to be intimidated by Scheffler, despite the world No 1 digging into his five-shot overnight lead. MacIntyre's grandstand moment in Baltimore handed him a four-shot advantage over Scheffler and ensured he has all the motivation for what could be the biggest Sunday of his sporting life thus far. The 14th will but crystallise his desire. MacIntyre was faced with an eight-footer and, as well as all the usual 'USA, USA' garbage, there was personal slander hurled from the hospitality section overlooking the green of the par-four. When the putt dropped, MacIntyre swivelled on his spine and gestured back to the miscreant, keeping his putter-head pointed at him as he walked off the green. Asked about his clash with the galleries, MacIntyre laughed as he talked about Ryder Cup rivalries. 'We're in America, playing against their sweetheart Scottie, who I get on well with, he's a great guy,' he said. 'I expected it today and I expect it again tomorrow. You give me c--p, I'll give you c--p back. I'm not scared of that.' MacIntyre is not to be messed with. He still plays for his local shinty team, and if the Americans want to look that up on Google they will see the ferocity. This might make all this yet more significant to 'Big Time Bob'. Granted, MacIntyre is such a passionate Scot that he would doubtlessly say that his national open is still the high point, even if he prevails at Caves Valley. But with the enormous riches on offer, and more pertinently the scalp of Scheffler, the rest of the world would be forgiven for ranking this top of the pile. The left-hander from Oban bogeyed the first but then reeled off three birdies and 14 pars, including a quite miraculous save on the drivable par-four fifth, when his tee shot ended in thick bush adjacent to the green. It was impressive that the ball was even found, and when MacIntyre somehow hacked out onto the green, before two-putting for par, the stunned expression on Scheffler's face said it all. . @robert1lefty made par from where 😱 📺 Golf Channel — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 16, 2025 It looks a two-golfer race as Ludvig Aberg is two shots further back on 10 under after a 68. Donald will also be thrilled at the Swede's display so far after question marks were raised about his form with a month to go until next month's match in New York. Sam Burns is in a tie for fourth with Harry Hall – the Cornishman who himself is launching a late bid for a Bethpage berth – and Scheffler's close ally could force himself into the wild-card picture for Team USA. So much to play for. Indeed, Sunday has the potential to be a decisive day for Europe, too. Rasmus Hojgaard holds the lead in the Danish Championship on the DP World Tour and if the home hero can convert his advantage into silverware in Copenhagen, then he could all but confirm his place in Donald's dozen. Hojgaard, the 24-year-old whose twin Nicolai played in the last Ryder Cup, is 13 under and one clear of England's Marco Penge. Should he prevail, it is highly likely that the surnames of the Europe team will be the same as in 2023 – with just the Hojgaard Christian name being different.
