Despite Iyer's strong showing, including a half-century against Australia in December 2023, Agarkar explained that the final squad composition left little room for him. 'With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It is just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he will have to wait for his chance,' Agarkar said.

One of the major talking points was Gill's promotion as vice-captain under
, replacing Axar Patel. Agarkar praised Gill's recent performances, particularly during the England series, where he exceeded expectations.
'Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all. There are more options for the top order now and Shubman has been in great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions,' he noted.
Poll
Do you agree with Shreyas Iyer's omission from the Asia Cup 2025 squad?
Yes, it was the right decision No, he should have been included
Agarkar also reminded that Gill had previously served as vice-captain after the last T20 World Cup, suggesting the move had been in the works for some time.
'Now that he is available, at least Suryakumar has two options. It is their headache to pick the batting lineup. Ours was to pick the 15 and we have got real depth in T20 cricket,' he added.
On the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Agarkar said it was an unfortunate call but highlighted that Abhishek Sharma's inclusion was influenced by his ability to contribute with the ball.
The
2025 begins on September 9 in the UAE, with India entering the tournament under Suryakumar's leadership and Gill as his deputy.

Jinxed? Dream11 joins list of BCCI team sponsors to face legal troubles

There is no bigger name than BCCI in cricket fraternity as of now, given the popularity of cricket in India. Every company wants to have some type of partnership with BCCI as it can prove to be the best way to put their names in the widespread market. However, the biggest partnership position that anyone can hold with BCCI is being the team sponsor, which means every match the team plays, players will wear the jersey with the team sponsor's name on it, putting the company in the best possible advertising position. However, as good as this deal sounds, the history behind it has been somewhat cursed in the 21st century, as all of India's team sponsors since 2001 have found themselves in some sort of legal or financial dispute after partnering with the BCCI. The latest addition to this list is Dream11, which became India's team sponsor in 2023 and is currently finding itself in a precarious situation after the Indian government passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 on August 21, putting a blanket ban on all real-money gaming apps. How the new bill impacts Dream11 According to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, any app or game that involves real-time money — i.e. spending money in order to earn more money in real time — shall be banned completely, irrespective of being a luck-based or skill-based game. Dream11 comes under the skill-based section where consumers make their fantasy team and put money on it with hopes of earning more if the players perform well. This means, given the nature of the current services provided by Dream11, the new Bill will put a permanent ban on the app. When will the ban be enacted The new gaming Bill has passed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and now only needs the President's nod for the Bill to become an Act, after which all real-money gaming apps including Dream11 will be immediately banned from running their operations. BCCI jinx continues With Dream11 now facing legal trouble, they are part of an unwanted list of BCCI team sponsors to find themselves in some sort of operational trouble following their partnership with the Indian cricket team. But what does the complete list look like? Take a look. Sahara: 2001 to 2013 For over a decade, Sahara's logo was synonymous with the Indian cricket jersey, from the heartbreak of the 2003 World Cup final to the glory of 2011. Despite the massive visibility, Sahara's financial empire crumbled. After raising about ₹24,000 crore from 30 million investors, the group faced SEBI action for regulatory violations. The Supreme Court ordered deposits, but non-compliance led to Subrata Roy's arrest in 2014. Even after his death in 2023, efforts to recover funds for investors continue. Star India: 2014 to 2017 Star India replaced Sahara, coinciding with the rise of modern icons like Kohli and Rohit. The brand's presence on the jersey symbolised a new cricketing era, but business fortunes soured. Walt Disney-owned Star faced scrutiny for abuse of market dominance, prompting a Competition Commission probe. Meanwhile, Hotstar's struggles forced a merger with Jio, leaving the once-dominant broadcaster weakened. Oppo (2017 to 2020) Oppo signed a massive ₹1,079 crore deal but exited early due to poor returns. Legal battles over patent disputes with Nokia and InterDigital further dented its standing. Byju's stepped in, honouring Oppo's financial terms, but soon spiralled into its own troubles. By 2023, the BCCI had moved NCLT over a ₹158 crore default, adding to the edtech giant's mounting financial woes. Byju's (2020 to 2022) Initially hailed as the saviour of BCCI's sponsorship deal, Byju's soon became another cautionary tale. Payment defaults, insolvency petitions, and regulatory scrutiny left the once-celebrated edtech unicorn fighting for survival, despite a temporary truce with the cricket board in court. Dream11 (2023 to Present) Dream11, the current jersey sponsor until 2026, faces its own share of uncertainty. With the BCCI wary of links to betting and real-money gaming, Dream11's legality has been under review. The company was also hit with tax demands over alleged GST evasion of ₹1,200 crore earlier. Though one notice was withdrawn, fresh scrutiny from GST authorities is expected, leaving its sponsorship future in question. Is this the end of the road for Dream11? The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 surely puts the main operation of Dream11 to rest, but it does not actually mean the end of the road for the fantasy gaming giant, as they can still keep running their apps with a subscription model where players can pay some money to try their hand at fantasy gaming without any real money in return. However, it is unlikely to keep them in the position to stay as BCCI team sponsors, as their revenue will take a huge hit. But how this will actually impact their partnership with BCCI, we will have to wait some time to get the final answer.

Samson and Dube out, Jitesh to come in?: Picking India's strongest playing XI for Asia Cup 2025

With the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025 out, it is time to analyse and contemplate what could be Team India's playing XI in the Asia Cup matches. The press conference eagerly awaited by Indian cricket fans took place on Tuesday in Mumbai, where chief selector Ajit Agarkar and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav announced the 15-member Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025. In the lead-up to the squad announcement, several suggestions were made over who could potentially be in the squad and who could receive a snub. With the squad out, everything is crystal clear now. Subsequently, it is time to dive deep into the squad and figure out the players likely to feature in the playing XI for the tournament. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Excluding key players like captain Suryakumar Yadav, premier bowler Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, and opener Abhishek Sharma, who face little competition for their spots, who else might secure a place in India's playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025? Newly appointed vice-captain Shubman Gill is likely another guaranteed pick, as chief selector Ajit Agarkar has hinted at his potential as a future all-format captain. Additionally, Gill's role as deputy suggests his spot is secure, making him a likely choice over Sanju Samson to open the innings for India. With five spots in the playing XI already secured, and given the success of spinners in the Champions Trophy earlier this year in the UAE, Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir are likely to select Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, leaving four slots open. Who should bat at No.3? Tilak Varma has been exceptional for India since his T20 debut in 2023 against the West Indies, where he shone at No. 4. He later moved to No. 3, delivering standout performances, including back-to-back centuries against South Africa in November 2024. His consistent form at No. 3 continued in India's T20I series against England, strongly indicating he will retain that position for the Asia Cup 2025. Suryakumar Yadav could also bat at No. 3, with him and Tilak Varma potentially rotating the position based on form and match conditions. However, No. 4 appears to be Suryakumar's preferred spot, where he consistently plays for both India and the Mumbai Indians. Tilak Varma scored back to back centuries for India against South Africa. Image: AP Axar's utility or Rinku's finishing? Axar Patel proved vital for India during the 2024 T20 World Cup, batting at No. 4 and justifying his selection with a crucial 47 in the final against South Africa, while also contributing significantly with the ball throughout the tournament. His all-round utility makes him a likely pick for the Asia Cup 2025. However, selecting him over a proven finisher like Rinku Singh, who is also present in the squad, will be a tough decision. Moreover, Shivam Dube, who made a significant impact for India with his 20-30 run cameos in the T20 World Cup 2024, is also in the reckoning. He was also decent in the England series, scoring 83 runs in two T20Is. All-rounder Axar Patel is one of the players likely to be included in the playing XI. Image: AP Which keeper will solve the lower-middle order woes? With Sanju Samson, who is better suited to open but likely to lose his spot to Shubman Gill, Jitesh Sharma is poised to take on wicket-keeping duties. Sharma's batting record for India has been modest, scoring just 100 runs in nine T20Is, with his last appearance in January 2024 against Afghanistan ending in a duck. However, his strong IPL 2025 performance, where he scored 261 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 178, keeps him in contention. He is likely to serve as the wicket-keeper and a valuable lower-order batsman for the Asia Cup 2025. Selecting Jitesh Sharma over Sanju Samson will be challenging, as Samson has a proven track record in T20 internationals. However, Samson's poor performance against England earlier in 2025, scoring just 51 runs in five matches, goes against him. Jitesh's addition at the bottom means one out of Axar or Dube will have to go out and considering the matches are un UAE, the former may get picked. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sanju Samson has scored three T20I tons since Gautam Gambhir took over. Reuters Arshdeep Singh will support Bumrah Arshdeep Singh was instrumental in India's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets. A regular in India's T20I lineup, he is certain to feature in the playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025. He would only miss out if India decide to go with only one specialist pacer and add an extra seam-bowling all-rounder like Dube. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is expected to be a regular member of India's playing XI at the Asia Cup along with senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah. AP India's Likely playing XI in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 Considering all the factors, this could be the preferred playing XI for Team India: Abhishek Sharma Shubman Gill Tilak Varma Suryakumar Yadav Hardik Pandya Axar Patel Jitesh Sharma Kuldeep Yadav Jasprit Bumrah Arshdeep Singh Varun Chakravarthy The above 11 provide excellent balance to the team, but the final selection will depend on the coach and captain's decision.

Online gaming bill: What does it mean for sports and sports enthusiasts?

India is making some big moves in the world of online gaming with the introduction of the Online Gaming Bill. Known as the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, the new proposed law, which was passed by the Cabinet on Tuesday, April 19, seeks to encourage e-sports and social games. But, at the same time, the bill also prohibits real money gaming and online betting, which could lead to addiction, financial loss, and security bill, which is now headed to the parliament, is being seen as a game-changer for competitive gaming, players, and the industry as whole. So what does it mean for e-sports, the users and the cricket industry at large, which has seen platforms like Dream 11 and MyCircle acting as key sponsors. Online Gaming Bill: What does it do for e-sports?Under the Online Gaming Bill, e-sports will now be recognised as an official form of competitive sport in India. The Union ministry of Sports will now develop guidelines and standards for the conduct of esports events in the country, as well as establish training academies, research centres and more. The bill is also envisioning incentive schemes, awareness programs and the integration of e-sports into the broader sports policy. Online Gaming Bill: How does it aim to safeguard users? The Online Gaming Bill also cracks down on harmful gaming practices. This means that there will be a stop on online gambling, betting and real money games that can cause addiction and lead to financial loss. By this, the users will be safeguarded from fraud, money laundering and other online risks. Banks and payments have been barred from processing payments related to such games. Online money games that are active in the country at the moment, have been blocked under the Information Technology Act, 2000. Online Gaming Bill: What does it mean for the cricketing industry? The Online Gaming Bill could spell the end of 'real money gaming platforms' that have high stakes in the cricketing industry. The bill means that multi-billion dollar fantasy gaming industries will take a major hit in review. Sources have told India Today that the overall ad sector could take a hit of Rs. 17,000 Crore hit with the bill coming into play. Of this, a huge chunk of revenue comes from websites like Dream 11 and MyCircle11. Dream11 brought the Indian team's title rights for about USD 44 million (Rs 358 crore approx). My11Circle brought IPL fantasy gaming rights for a fee of Rs 625 crore for five years (Rs 125 crore approx annually), according to PTI. advertisementAs per "PROHIBITIONS" clause: "No person shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in the offering of online money game and online money gaming service."No bank, financial institution, or any other person facilitating financial transactions or authorisation of funds shall engage in, permit, aid, abet, induce or otherwise facilitate any transaction or authorisation of funds towards payment for any online money gaming service."This will start a chain reaction that could affect the sports sponsorship market, including individual players' sponsorship and franchise-based domestic leagues of disciplines like kabaddi and football. Online Gaming Bill: What are the punishments? The "OFFENCES AND PENALTIES" clause states that real money gaming is a criminal offence, which can lead to jail and a huge fine for the service provider. Clause 9. (1) reads "Any person who offers online money gaming service in contravention of section 5 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years or with fine which may extend to one crore rupees or with 9. (2) reads: "Any person who makes or causes to make advertisement in any media, in contravention of section 6, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with fine which may extend to fifty lakh rupees or with both.- EndsMust Watch
