New Imaging Technique Makes the Sun Look Like a Swirling Pink Liquid
As detailed in a new study published in the journal Nature Astronomy, scientists have leveraged new coronal adaptive optics tech to bypass the blurriness caused by the turbulence of the Earth's atmosphere, a time-old obstacle that's frustrated astronomers' attempts to see features on our home star at a resolution better than 620 miles. Now, they've gotten it down to just under 40 miles — a light year sized leap.
The result is some of the clearest images to date of the fine structures that make up the Sun's formidable corona, the outermost layer of its atmosphere known for its unbelievable temperatures and violent, unpredictable outbursts.
The authors are optimistic that their blur-bypassing techniques will be a game-changer.
"These are by far the most detailed observations of this kind, showing features not previously observed, and it's not quite clear what they are," coauthor Vasyl Yurchyshyn, a research professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Center for Terrestrial Research (CSTR), said in a statement about the work.
"It is super exciting to build an instrument that shows us the Sun like never before," echoed lead author Dirk Schmidt, an adaptive optics scientist at the US National Solar Observatory.

Stretching for millions of miles into space, the corona is the staging ground for the Sun's violent outbursts, which range from solar storms, to solar flares, to coronal mass ejections. One reason scientists are interested in these phenomena is because they continue to batter our own planet's atmosphere, playing a significant role in the Earth's climate and wreaking havoc on our electronics. Then, at a reach totally beyond our very limited human purview, is the corona's mighty solar wind, which sweeps across the entire solar system, shielding it from cosmic rays.
But astronomers are still trying to understand how these solar phenomena occur. One abiding mystery is why the corona can reach temperatures in the millions of degrees Fahrenheit, when the Sun's surface it sits thousands of miles above is no more than a relatively cool 10,000 degrees. The conundrum even has a name: the coronal heating problem.
The level of detailed captured in the latest images, taken with an adaptive optics system installed on the Goode Solar Telescope at the CSTR, could be transformative in probing these mysteries.

One type of feature the unprecedented resolution revealed were solar prominences, which are large, flashy structures that protrude from the sun's surface, found in twisty shapes like arches or loops. A spectacular video shows a solar prominence swirling like a tortured water spout as it's whipped around by the sun's magnetic field.
Most awe-inspiring of all are the examples of what's known as coronal rain. Appearing like waterfalls suspended in midair, the phenomenon is caused as plasma cools and condenses into huge globs before crashing down to the sun's surface. These were imaged at a scale smaller than 100 kilometers, or about 62 miles. In solar terms, that's pinpoint accuracy.
"With coronal adaptive optics now in operation, this marks the beginning of a new era in solar physics, promising many more discoveries in the years and decades to come," said coauthor Philip R. Goode at the CSTR in a statement.

What would Mars look like in daylight? 'Enhanced' photo from Perseverance offers a look
With its reddish-hued surface and surroundings, Mars has more than earned its colorful nickname. But how would the Red Planet appear under clear-blue Earth skies? Thanks to a NASA rover wandering the Martian iron oxide-infused surface, we now have a rough idea. Perseverance, one of two car-sized robotic rovers managed from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, has spent years exploring the Mars surface for signs that the planet was once habitable. Scientists believe the geology of Mars may hold valuable clues about past ancient life, and so the robotic vehicles, controlled remotely from Earth, have slowly navigated the rocky terrain to scoop up and collect intriguing samples. Along the way, Perseverance has made some extraordinary finds and captured some stunning vistas. The latest came earlier in May, when the rover captured what NASA described as "one of the sharpest panoramas of its mission so far." NASA released the mosaic in August, which, with color-enhancing technology, unveils the Martian landscape under a sky that is "deceptively" blue. What to know about NASA rover In July 2020, the Perseverance rover underwent a 200-day, 300-million-mile journey to reach Mars. After landing in February 2021 in the Jezero Crater, the robot, controlled remotely from Earth, spent nearly four years searching for and collecting more than two dozen rock samples – many of which are stored at the first-ever depot on another planet for future retrieval. The bottom of the Jezero Crater – believed to have formed 3.9 billion years ago from a massive impact – is considered to be among the most promising areas on Mars to search for evidence of ancient life. Perseverance's adventures have revealed some insights about the enigmatic Martian geology. Then in 2024, after years in the trenches of Jezero, Perseverance in December finally summitted the steep Martian crater to begin the next leg of its journey exploring the crater's rim. The rocks Perseverance has spent years collecting are of high interest to NASA and the European Space Agency, which hopes to one day soon retrieve the samples and bring them back to Earth before humans themselves venture to the Red Planet. NASA's Curiosity rover has also been exploring the Martian surface since 2012 in the Gale Crater. 'Enhanced-color' photo shows Mars under Earth-like skies The imaging team of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover took advantage of clear skies May 26 on the Red Planet to capture the recent panoramic image from the rover's Mastcam-Z camera. The final product, a 360-degree panorama of an area nicknamed "Falbreen," was stitched together from 96 separate images. One version shows Mars in all its natural rust-colored glory. The other mosaic is what NASA refers to as an "enhanced-color" version that had its color bands processed to "improve visual contrast and accentuate color differences," NASA said in a press release. The result? A Martian sky that more accurately resembles Earth's. "In this particular mosaic, we have enhanced the color contrast, which accentuates the differences in the terrain and sky," Jim Bell, Mastcam-Z's principal investigator at Arizona State University in Tempe, said in a statement. Several interesting features are visible in the image, including a rock that appears to lie on top of a sand ripple and hills as distant as 40 miles away. Tracks from the rover's journey to the location can also be seen toward the mosaic's right edge about 300 feet away. Martian 'helmet' and other recent rover discoveries The panoramic photo is just one of several recent sights and discoveries made possible by Perseverance in 2025. Earlier in August, NASA published a photo of a rock on the surface of Mars with a pointed peak and a flared "brim" resembling a centuries-old helmet. The image, taken Aug. 5 by the rover's Left Mastcam-Z camera, was chosen as the photo of the week for week 234 of its mission on Mars. Perseverance also made two incredible finds earlier in the year, the most recent of which occurred in March when the rover came across an oddly textured rock comprised of hundreds of millimeter-sized spheres. In January, Perseverance also witnessed a relatively uncommon sight of two dust devils swirling and spinning near one another. NASA released the video and imagery of the phenomenon in April. A Nuclear Energy Stock Worth Watching
Key Points Nuclear energy is clean, and gaining in popularity. Constellation Energy has agreements with Microsoft and Meta Platforms. 10 stocks we like better than Constellation Energy › The Trump administration has plans to put a nuclear reactor on the moon by 2030. It's far from clear if that will actually happen in just five years -- or ever. But back on Earth, nuclear power is enjoying a renaissance that should cause investors to look twice. The global quest to refocus on nuclear energy is being driven by several distinct factors. The world needs more (clean) power First, worldwide demand for power is projected to soar in coming years -- as much as 18% by 2050, according to McKinsey -- due to the emergence of power-hungry data centers and artificial intelligence projects, as well as the adoption of electric vehicles and the ongoing electrification of emerging market countries, among other factors. Goldman Sachs estimates power consumption from AI data centers alone will rise 50% by 2027 and 165% by the end of this decade. Recall Microsoft's 2024 deal to power data centers by restarting one of the reactors at Three Mile Island that was shut down for economic reasons in 2019 (I'll get to the owner of that plant in just a moment). In addition, countries are scrambling for power sources that don't worsen global warming, and nuclear energy is among the lowest carbon-emitting energy sources available. Finally, nuclear has undergone a technological revolution in recent years with the emergence of so-called small modular reactors that are more easily and rapidly constructed and transported. They're also much less financially risky to build. For all of those reasons, opposition to nuclear has mostly evaporated among important gatekeepers like the World Bank and the European Union that were once, well, lukewarm to the prospect of more plants. And some countries are going all in. This past May, President Trump announced four executive orders designed to reinvigorate America's nuclear energy industry. The real proof of nuclear's rebirth, however, is in the rush to build new plants. There are roughly 70 nuclear facilities under construction across the world, according to the World Nuclear Association. And world nuclear capacity is projected to increase by 2.5 times by 2050, says the International Atomic Energy Agency. Constellation is signing agreements The biggest nuclear provider in the U.S. -- by a long shot -- is Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG), a Baltimore-based power utility. The company generates power through hydro, wind, natural gas and solar facilities, but its biggest source is nuclear, which accounts for about 86% of its output. It currently operates 21 nuclear reactors at 16 facilities (there are 54 total commercial nuclear plants in the U.S. at present). Constellation is projected to produce 95% of its energy carbon free by 2030 and 100% a decade later. Constellation owns the Pennsylvania nuclear plant formerly known as Three Mile Island -- the one that will power Microsoft data centers and is now called Crane Clean Energy Center. A bit of context and history: The 20-year agreement with Microsoft paved the way to restart Three Mile Island Unit 1, which "operated at industry-leading levels of safety and reliability for decades before being shut down for economic reasons" in 2019, according to Constellation. In 1979, there was a partial nuclear meltdown of the Unit 2 reactor at the Three Mile Island facility. "This was the most serious accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant operating history, although its small radioactive releases had no detectable health effects on plant workers or the public," according to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Unit 2 is permanently shut down. Constellation also recently agreed to provide 20 years of power from an Illinois nuclear plant to support the data centers of Facebook parent Meta Platforms. The stock is worth a look Constellation reported second-quarter results last week and both earnings and revenue beat Wall Street's expectations. Earnings of $1.91 per share were 13% higher than a year ago. Revenue jumped 11.4% to $6.1 billion. The power company also announced a 94% capacity rate for its reactors -- the amount of time they operate at maximum power output -- which is among the highest in the industry. And management is determined to support the stock. It just repurchased $400 million worth of shares. The stock is up 46% year to date as of market close on Thursday and 75% over the past 52 weeks. Constellation's market cap is about $106 billion and its price-to-earnings ratio is around 34. Yes, that P/E ratio is a bit high for a power utility. But consider what you're getting as an investor: a power company that has basically transcended its category. Constellation is increasingly viewed not as a boring utility, but instead as an AI-adjacent stock because of its deals to provide clean nuclear energy to AI-centric companies like those in the "Magnificent Seven."
