Boxer Imane Khelif breaks silence over IOC's new rules to protect women
Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif spoke out after the new International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry announced policies to ' protect the female category ' at future games.

Khelif, 26, won the gold medal in the women's 66 kg division at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but the Algerian's victory was marred by controversy over reports that she allegedly failed gender eligibility tests, resulting in the athlete being one of two competitors — the other, Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting — barred from the 2023 World Championships.

Khelif has maintained that she is female, and not transgender, but a recently leaked medical report summarized the findings on the boxer as 'abnormal,' stating: 'Chromosome analysis reveals male karyotype.'

While there have been calls for Khelif to return the gold medal, Coventry said in her announcement last month that despite the rules change, the boxer would be allowed to keep her Olympic title.

However, the boxer took to Instagram to share a selfie and defiant message: 'Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.'

The Olympian also included lyrics from Sia's song 'I'm Still Here,' which speaks of perseverance and survival, in the post that has since been deleted.

'We have to do that to ensure fairness. And we have to do it with a scientific approach. And with the inclusion of the international federations who have done a lot of work in that area.'

Khelif's boxing future remains uncertain.

World Boxing, which has since been recognized by the IOC as the sport's international federation, has introduced mandatory sex testing and said Khelif would not be able to compete in the female category and defend her Olympic title until she undergoes the test.

Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signs striker Geubbels from St. Gallen
PARIS (AP) — Newly promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC signed striker Willem Geubbels from Swiss team St. Gallen on a five-year contract on Sunday. Paris FC announced the signing with a video posted on X. No transfer fee was given but French sports daily L'Équipe said Geubbels cost 9 million euros ($10.5 million) with a further 2.5 million euros in eventual bonuses. The 24-year-old Geubbels came through Lyon's famed youth academy but hardly played for the club before joining Monaco. He scored one league goal there and two for Nantes before joining St. Gallen in 2023, where he scored 14 league goals last season. Paris FC has large funds at its disposal since its takeover by France's richest family, the Arnaults of luxury empire LVMH. The energy drink giant Red Bull acquired a minority stake. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. For the first time in 35 years two Paris-based soccer clubs are in Ligue 1. Furthermore, Paris FC has changed its home stadium since being promoted and will play at Stade Jean-Bouin, which is literally across the street from defending champion Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium. ___ AP soccer:

Suspected Islamist rebels kill 30 in Congo's North Kivu province
A map of the Democratic Republic of Kongo with the province of North Kivu highlighted along the eastern border of the country, north of Rwanda. (Google) KINSHASA, Congo — Suspected Islamist rebels have killed at least 30 people in a series of attacks in Congo's North Kivu province in recent days, a Congolese military official said Saturday. The killings took place in Bapere village between Wednesday and Friday, according to Col. Alain Kiwawa, the military administrator of Lubero territory where the village is located. 'We have more than 30 people dead, and at least a hundred who are being held hostage,' Kiwawa told The Associated Press. A civil society leader, Samuel Kaheni, the president of the Bapere civil society organization, added that several houses were burned and victims were mostly killed with knives. The attacks are the latest in a string of recent attacks by Islamic State-aligned Allied Democratic Force (ADF) after its members killed nearly 40 people last month in an attack on a Catholic church in Ituri. Most of the victims were killed with machetes. The ADF, with roots in neighbouring Uganda, operates in the border villages between Uganda and Congo. Both countries have launched a joint armed operation against the group, but the group has only increased its attacks in recent months. The incidence of ADF attacks adds to the complicated security challenges in the eastern region of Congo, where dozens of other armed groups are fighting, and the central government is battling the M23 rebels, which have taken control of Goma and other key cities. Lubero's military administrator called on the residents to be on guard against further violence. 'I ask the population to speak out and remain vigilant,' he said. Vancouver's Little Mountain blanked by Venezuela 4-0 at Little League World Series
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT – Canada's run at the Little League World Series started on a sour note Friday as Vancouver's Little Mountain lost 4-0 to Latin America, represented by Venezuela's Cardenales Little League. The Canadian champions managed just one hit — a single by Tyson Grimsrud-Ronse — against starter Andres Reyes Querales and reliever Sebastian Lopez. Venezuela opened the scoring in the first inning when Lopez came home on a bases-loaded walk. In the second, Santiago Martinez doubled and scored on Reyes Querales's single before Alam Parra and Samuel Castillo crossed on wild pitches. Felix Hoyano took the loss for Canada, allowing four runs on six hits over three innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Arek Aubuchon followed with two scoreless innings of relief. Venezuela, which opened the tournament Wednesday with a 5-0 win over Puerto Rico, rolled through its regional tournament with a 46-6 run differential but needed a special U.S. travel exemption after visas were initially denied under U.S. President Donald Trump's restrictions affecting 19 countries. Canada will play Sunday against the winner of Saturday's game between Europe-Africa and Australia. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 15, 2025.
