Investors bet on Nvidia share recovery with buying of leveraged ETFs

Reuters28-01-2025

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Short-term traders are proving eager to bet on a rapid recovery in Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab, pouring money into the three largest leveraged exchange-traded funds which are linked to gains in the share price of the AI chipmaking giant.
Speculators and traders flocked to buy leveraged funds which aim to deliver double the daily return in Nvidia, asset managers said on Tuesday. The company's stock suffered the biggest one-day fall in market capitalization in history on Monday in response to news that China's DeepSeek launched a new artificial intelligence model.
"We had about $1 billion of inflows into our long product," said Will Rhind, founder and CEO of GraniteShares, referring to the largest of these funds, the GraniteShares 2x Long NVDA Daily ETF (NVDL.O), opens new tab. That wasn't enough to offset the impact of Nvidia's massive selloff on its assets, which shrank to about $4.3 billion from a high north of $6 billion last year.
Each of the four Nvidia leveraged long ETFs ended Monday with losses of between 33% and 34%, according to LSEG data.
The T-Rex 2x Long Nvidia Daily Target ETF (NVDX.Z), opens new tab saw inflows of $7.6 million into the $488.4 million fund on Monday, according to Scott Acheychek, the chief operating officer of REX Financial, one of the two firms that created the fund. Its much smaller bearish ETF, which delivers a gain equivalent to any loss in Nvidia's stock price, saw $3.1 million in outflows, the firm said.
The Direxion Daily NVDA Bull 2x Shares ETF (NVDU.O), opens new tab, which has about $435 million in assets, had $61.4 million in inflows, the firm said. Its corresponding inverse fund also had inflows, of about $3 million.
The smallest of the four leveraged Nvidia ETFs, the $3 million Leverage Shares 2x Long NVDA Daily ETF (NVDG.O), opens new tab, couldn't immediately provide details of flows into its fund on Monday in dollar terms. But Paul Marino, chief revenue officer of Themes ETFs, which oversees the U.S. business of Leverage Shares, said trading volume was six times average.
"That shows you how many speculative traders are involved in Nvidia," Marino said. By the end of the day on Monday, he said flows had turned positive and remained so throughout the day on Tuesday.

WPP boss Mark Read to step down amid AI pressure on advertising

The boss of the UK's largest advertising firm WPP is to step down at the end of the year. Mark Read, chief executive of the business, which owns agencies including Ogilvy, has revealed his departure as the company battles the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector. Shares in the company dipped after the announcement, moving it closer to the five-year-low it struck in April. Mr Read has been at the company for 30 years, with seven of those as chief executive. He took over the top role in 2018 amid a period of upheaval following the resignation of Sir Martin Sorrell amid a workplace inquiry. Mr Read led the business through a turbulent period as it sought to grow despite pressure from social media giants and the rapid expansion of AI. In its most recent update in April, WPP reported that revenues dropped by 5% to £3.24 billion for the first quarter of 2025. Mr Read said: 'When I took on this role our mission was to build a simpler, stronger business, and put structure and new energy behind our creativity and performance, powered by world-leading technology. 'I am proud that our teams across the business have delivered that exceptionally well. 'After seven years in the role, and with the foundations in place for WPP's continued success, I feel it is the right time to hand over the leadership of this amazing company.' WPP has said its search for a successor is under way. Former BT boss Philip Jansen, who was appointed WPP chairman last year, said Mr Read will continue to focus on the firm's growth strategy over the rest of the year. Mr Jansen added: 'On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Mark for his contributions not only as CEO but throughout his more than 30 years of leadership and service to the company. 'During that time Mark has played a central role in transforming the company into a world leader in modern marketing services, with deep AI, data and technology capabilities, global presence and unrivalled creative talent, setting WPP up well for longer-term success.'

Rednote joins wave of Chinese firms releasing open-source AI models

BEIJING, June 9 (Reuters) - China's Rednote, one of the country's most popular social media platforms, has released an open-source large language model, joining a wave of Chinese tech firms making their artificial intelligence models freely available. The approach contrasts with many U.S. tech giants like OpenAI and Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab, which have kept their most advanced models proprietary, though some American firms including Meta (META.O), opens new tab have also released open-source models. Open sourcing allows Chinese companies to demonstrate their technological capabilities, build developer communities and spread influence globally at a time when the U.S. has sought to stymie China's tech progress with export restrictions on advanced semiconductors. Rednote's model, called is available for download on developer platform Hugging Face. A company technical paper describing it was uploaded on Friday. In coding tasks, the model performs comparably to Alibaba's Qwen 2.5 series, though it trails more advanced models such as DeepSeek-V3, the technical paper said. RedNote, also known by its Chinese name Xiaohongshu, is an Instagram-like platform where users share photos, videos, text posts and live streams. The platform gained international attention earlier this year when some U.S. users flocked to the app amid concerns over a potential TikTok ban. The company has invested in large language model development since 2023, not long after OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in late 2022. It has accelerated its AI efforts in recent months, launching Diandian, an AI-powered search application that helps users find content on Xiaohongshu's main platform. Other companies that are pursuing an open-source approach include Alibaba ( opens new tab which launched Qwen 3, an upgraded version of its model in April. Earlier this year, startup DeepSeek released its low-cost R1 model as open-source software, shaking up the global AI industry due to its competitive performance despite being developed at a fraction of the cost of Western rivals.

WPP chief Mark Read steps down as ad agency battles AI

The boss of WPP, Mark Read, has announced he will step down, as the advertising agency which was once the largest in the world struggles against the rise of AI and its shares lag at their lowest level in about five years. Read will leave WPP after more than 30 years, with just under seven spent in the top job. He will stay on as chief executive until the end of the year while the board starts to look for his successor. WPP's share price has shed about half its value under his leadership, as the company has struggled against the rise of AI tech that helps companies to automate the creation of adverts. The chair of WPP, former BT boss Philip Jansen, said Read 'played a central role in transforming the company into a world leader in marketing services'. Jansen, a City heavyweight, triggered speculation about Read's position as chief executive when he joined as chair at the start of the year. Last year the group lost its crown as the biggest ad agency in the world by revenue to its French rival Publicis. Omnicom and rival group Interpublic agreed to combine in a $13.3bn deal, compared with WPP's market value of £5.9bn. Read took over in 2018 from Sir Martin Sorrell, who bought a small Kent-based maker of wire baskets in 1985 and built it into the world's largest marketing services group. Sorrell left amid allegations of personal misconduct which he denied. Read has overhauled the group over the course of his tenure, merging agencies and selling off some businesses, which has helped cut net debt. However the shares have lost more than a quarter of their value in the past year alone, as tech companies such as Google, Meta Platforms and Amazon have become dominant advertising names in their own right. This month Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said it will start helping advertisers fully create and target campaigns using AI tools, including images, video and text. Shares in WPP dropped by 2% in early trading on Monday after the news of Read's departure.
