Bruce Willis told Samuel L. Jackson to get cast as someone 'everybody loves' for a stable career. He later got the role of Nick Fury.
Samuel L. Jackson told Vanity Fair that Bruce Willis advised him in 1994 to get a lead blockbuster role.
He said Willis thought actors needed a beloved character to fall back on to have a stable career.
Jackson later followed his advice, getting a role as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Samuel L. Jackson said Bruce Willis once advised him to get cast as a beloved character in a franchise to have a stable career.
In an interview with Vanity Fair for a feature celebrating Willis' 70th birthday, Jackson recalled a career conversation they had while shooting "Die Hard With A Vengeance" in 1994.
"He told me, 'Hopefully you'll be able to find a character that, when you make bad movies and they don't make any money, you can always go back to this character everybody loves," Jackson recalled.
Willis then mentioned his role as John McClane in the "Die Hard" series, according to Jackson, as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in the "Terminator" movies and Sylvester Stallone's lead role in "Rocky" and "Rambo" as examples of the type of franchise characters Jackson should pursue.
Jackson eventually found that character when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the post-credit scene of 2008's "Iron Man."
Jackson said: "It didn't occur to me until I got that Nick Fury role — and I had a nine-picture deal to be Nick Fury — that, Oh, I'm doing what Bruce said. I've got this character now."
Jackson has appeared in 12 Marvel movies as Fury, the spy who helped form the Avengers and often advises the main superheroes. He's also reprised the role in two TV series and three games.
Jackson got his first lead Marvel role in the 2023 Disney+ series "Secret Invasion," although fans and critics panned the show.
It's not been reported how much Jackson has earned from his Marvel career, but considering it's a billion-dollar franchise, it will not be a small amount.
Jackson has also had box-office success elsewhere. He's starred in numerous other hit franchises, including the "Star Wars" prequel movies, which grossed $2.5 billion in total, according to Box Office Mojo.
In 2017, Box Office Mojo reported that Jackson had the biggest total box office across all his films of any actor, with a gross of $5.8 billion in the US and $13.4 billion worldwide.
Starring in franchises is not the only route to a stable career in Hollywood.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Meryl Streep are among the actors who generally avoid starring in sequels and franchises but have had long and well-paid careers without them.

Frank Grillo Talks About Why His DC Character Has Been So Much More Fulfilling Than His Marvel Role Ever Was — GeekTyrant
Frank Grillo is one of the few in the club of those who have played characters in both the DC and Marvel Universes. He played Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones, in the Marvel movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Captain America: Civil War (2016). He returned to voice the character in the series What If…? , and appeared in Avengers: Endgame . Though his appearance was brief, he's kept himself busy in other franchises, namely DC, and he's a lot happier with this arc over there than he ever was at Marvel. During a recent appearance on the Tulsa King panel at Fan Expo Dallas, moderated and hosted by ScreenRant, Grillo looked back on his time with the MCU, while sharing why he is having a better time being part of the DCU franchise. After discussing the MCU's Crossbones, Grillo explained what the upside is to playing a character like Flag Sr. in the DCU while working together with James Gunn: 'Rick Flag Sr... It was unfortunate because Crossbones isn't onscreen that much, and this is years ago. People love that character, and Marvel seems to have reused every other character except Crossbones. 'Now he's popping up in Spider-Man comics and Daredevil comics because he's a great villain, so I was expecting to have a lot of fun with it. But unfortunately, he perished kind of quickly. But I love working with James Gunn. ''I did the voice for Creature Commandos, and then I'm in Peacemaker, which is coming up in August. And before that, it's Superman with Rick Flag. So, it's different; it's more of an adventure than the Marvel stuff was.' Grillo's Flag Sr. makes his live-action debut with Superman in July, before returning in Peacemaker season 2.

Vision: Schitt's Creek Star Joins MCU Show, Character Has Connection to Iron Man
The upcoming MCU show has added a new cast member. Emily Hampshire is best known for playing Stevie Budd in Schitt's Creek, the CBC Television series that aired from 2015 to 2020 and also stars Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Annie Murphy. She also has a leading role in Amazon Prime Video's The Rig, which has so far run for two seasons. Now, Hampshire is officially joining the MCU as she'll star opposite Paul Bettany in the forthcoming Vision show, which serves as a spin-off to Marvel's WandaVision. Per Deadline, Hampshire is believed to be playing 'the sophisticated artificial intelligence E.D.I.T.H. (Even Dead, I'm The Hero), Tony Stark's augmented reality security and defense system. In the MCU, E.D.I.T.H. was originally created by Stark and bequeathed to Peter Parker following Stark's death. It provides access to Stark Industries' global satellite network along with an arsenal of missiles and drones.' The E.D.I.T.H. character was originally voiced by Dawn Michelle King in Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home. During that movie, Peter briefly let Quentin Beck/Mysterio access E.D.I.T.H. before reclaiming the technology for himself; however, it was then confiscated by the United States Department of Damage Control. Whether or not Hampshire will physically appear in the show or is just voicing the character remains unclear at this time. In addition to Bettany and Hampshire, the cast of the Vision MCU show includes James Spader as Ultron, T'Nia Miller as Jocasta, Faran Tahir as Raza, Todd Stashwick, and Ruaridh Mollica. Plot details for the Marvel Television show remain under wraps at this time, though it will presumably follow the White Vision character who emerged at the end of WandaVision. A premiere date has not yet been set.

Cassie's Ex-Boyfriend Kid Cudi Claims Diddy Broke Into His House in 2011: ‘I Wanted to Fight Him'
Kid Cudi recounted the alleged drama surrounding and their mutual ex-girlfriend, Cassie, when he took the stand in Diddy's sex trafficking trial. (Diddy has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.) Cudi, 41, testified about his past with Diddy, 55, and Cassie, 38, at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse on Thursday, May 22, arriving in an unusually casual look that consisted of jeans, a T-shirt and a leather jacket. The 'Day 'n' Nite' rapper began his testimony by saying that he thought Cassie was no longer seeing Diddy when he started dating her, telling the court, 'I didn't think that she was still diddling with him.' He recalled a day when Cassie called him in a panic to tell him that Diddy had learned of their romance. She had given Diddy Cudi's address and was worried that the music mogul might go to his house and confront him. Cudi went on to claim that Cassie told him Diddy was 'abusive' during their relationship. After Diddy found out they were dating, Cudi took her to the Sunset Marquis hotel so she would be 'safe away from him.' Cudi told the court that Cassie was 'very stressed' and 'nervous' when he picked her up. While they were there, assistant Capricorn Clark, who worked for both Cudi and Diddy, called Cudi 'on the verge of tears' and told him Diddy 'and an affiliate' were at Cudi's house. Every Celebrity Mentioned During the Diddy Trial: Kanye West, Michael B. Jordan and More After that phone conversation, Cudi drove home and called Diddy on the way, asking him, 'Motherf***er, are you at my house?' Diddy allegedly seemed 'calm' and said he wanted to talk to him. When Cudi arrived, he found that his exterior security cameras weren't working and one had been moved to a different angle. Inside the house, gifts for his family that had been on the kitchen counter were opened. His dog was 'locked up' in the bathroom, he claimed, adding that the pet was 'very on edge all the time' after the alleged incident. 'I wanted to confront him,' Cudi recalled of Diddy, adding that he called the police. 'I wanted to fight him.' Later, after Cudi and Cassie had already broken up, his dog sitter called to tell him that his car was on fire. The jury was shown photos of the damaged car, which Cudi said couldn't be repaired. He reported the incident to police, telling the jury that his honest reaction to the burned car was, 'What the f***?' Following the car incident, Cudi allegedly met up with Diddy at the Soho House in Los Angeles. 'Sean Combs was standing there with his hands behind his back like a Marvel supervillain,' Cudi claimed, adding that his fellow rapper said they were 'homies' and said he didn't understand why Cudi would date Cassie. 'He kept offering me water. It was weird that he was so calm,' Cudi continued, noting that he found Diddy's demeanor 'off-putting.' Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Ex-Girlfriend Cassie's Relationship Timeline When Cudi asked him about the car, Diddy allegedly gave him a 'very cold stare' and replied, 'I don't know what you're talking about.' Cudi said he then rescinded his offer of a handshake and left. Years later, the two men had a second meeting at Soho House, where Diddy allegedly told Cudi he was sorry for the past. 'Man, I just want to apologize for everything, all that bulls***,' Cudi recalled Diddy saying, adding that the Sean John founder brought one of his daughters to the meeting. 'After that apology, I kind of came to peace with all of it,' Cudi told the court. 'That's the last thing I was expecting to get.' In his cross-examination, Cudi told defense attorney Brian Steel that there was no damage to his home during the 2011 break-in and said the house had been unlocked, so there were no signs of forced entry. He also noted he never saw Diddy get violent with Cassie and claimed his ex-girlfriend never disclosed any sexual abuse to him. Steel went on to ask Cudi about his meeting with Diddy, and the 'Pursuit of Happiness' rapper said the two men agreed that Cassie misled them about being single. Cudi further alleged there was never any movement from the police about his report on the blown-up car, but Steel claimed the DNA on the car came back as having come from a female. During redirect questioning, Cudi told the prosecution that Cassie told him Diddy 'would hit her' and 'sometimes kick her,' adding that she was 'really shook' when they broke up. Why Kid Cudi's Dog Is a Point of Contention at Sean 'Diddy' Combs' Sex Trafficking Trial 'The drama, it just became out of hand,' he recalled of their split. 'I just wanted to give it space. Things were getting out of hand. For my safety, for her safety, I just stopped.' When asked why he had safety concerns, Cudi replied, 'I knew Sean Combs was violent.' As for his understanding of Diddy telling him he didn't know about the car bombing, Cudi felt that 'he was lying.' Cassie dated Cudi during a break from her relationship with Diddy, whom she was with on and off from 2007 to 2018. Cassie (full name Casandra Ventura) has since moved on with Alex Fine, whom she married in August 2019. The couple share daughters Frankie, 5, and Sunny, 4, and are expecting their third baby. Cudi, for his part, announced his engagement to Lola Abecassis Sartore in April 2024 and is the father of daughter Vada, 15. Following his September 2024 arrest, Diddy is on trial for racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and denied all of the allegations against him. In her own testimony earlier this month, Cassie claimed that Diddy found out about her romance with Cudi (real name Scott Mescudi) in 2011 when he searched through her emails during a 'freak off' and found a correspondence between her and Cudi's team about bringing a toiletry bag to a house. Cassie alleged that Diddy subsequently lunged at her with a 'wine bottle opener.' According to Cassie, she ran away and called Cudi from her burner phone to ask him to pick her up. Cudi took her to his house in the Hills, but when she later returned to a hotel room she was staying in, it had been trashed, with urine and feces allegedly located in the bathroom and the furniture in disarray. A Timeline of Diddy's Legal Troubles and Accusations: From Cassie Lawsuit to Multiple Arrests Cassie testified that Diddy 'was going to hurt Scott and I,' claiming that he also threatened to release two explicit videos of her from a freak off. She ultimately broke up with Cudi after receiving the alleged threats from Diddy. 'Too much danger, too much uncertainty of what could happen if we continued to see each other,' she said on the stand. Cassie also claimed that Diddy threatened to blow up Cudi's car and wanted Cudi's friends to be there to witness it. After Cassie and Cudi's split, Cudi allegedly met with his ex and Diddy to discuss his car, which was set on fire by an 'incendiary device' in January 2012, per a Los Angeles City Fire Department report obtained by Rolling Stone. 'What about my vehicle?' Cudi asked, according to Cassie's testimony. 'What vehicle?' Combs allegedly replied. 'And that was the end of the meeting,' Cassie said. Cassie previously filed a lawsuit against Diddy in November 2023, accusing him of physical abuse and sexual assault during their relationship. The court papers mentioned the allegations that Diddy threatened to firebomb Cudi's car. Diddy denied Cassie's claims at the time, and the case was settled out of court one day after it was filed.
