Militants kill one policeman in southeast Iran: Media

Al Arabiya3 days ago
Militants killed one policeman in Iran's restive southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, Iranian media reported Sunday, adding that three assailants also died.
'A policeman from Saravan was killed while terrorists were trying to enter the police station' in that area of Sistan-Baluchistan, the Tasnim news agency said.
The attackers were members of the Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl ('Army of Justice' in Arabic) based in Pakistan and active in Iran's southeast, the agency said.
'Three terrorists were killed and two were arrested,' Tasnim said.
Sistan-Baluchistan, which shares a long border with Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been the site of frequent clashes between security forces and insurgents or smugglers.
The province hosts a significant population from the Baloch ethnic minority, which practices Sunni Islam in Shia-majority Iran.
On July 26, gunmen stormed a courthouse in the province's capital Zahedan, killing at least six people, in an attack that was later claimed by Jaish al-Adl.
In one of the deadliest attacks in the province, 10 police officers were killed in October.

Israel says it killed 5 armed militants posing as US charity personnel

Israel's military has said it killed five armed militants in the Gaza Strip pretending to work for the US-based World Central Kitchen charity which condemned anyone posing as humanitarian personnel The military said it confirmed the five were not affiliated with the charity before killing them in an air strike last week while wearing WCK garb and posing a threat to Israeli troops. 'The terrorists deliberately affixed the emblem and wore yellow vests in an attempt to conceal their activity and avoid being targeted, cynically exploiting the status and trust afforded to aid organizations,' it said. WCK said late on Tuesday that it was contacted by Israeli authorities and confirmed the vehicle and people were not linked. 'We strongly condemn anyone posing as WCK or other humanitarians as this endangers civilians and aid workers,' it said in a statement on X. In December, WCK fired dozens of Palestinians working for the charity in Gaza, employees told Reuters at the time, after Israel said at least 62 staff were linked to militants. Israel's military did not give any identities of those killed in last week's incident. The WCK did not give more details or say whether the people targeted had been previously affiliated with the organization. An Israeli strike in April of last year hit a convoy of three vehicles and killed seven staff of WCK, including foreign aid workers. Israel apologized for what it said was a mistake. Aid organizations are struggling to meet the needs of Gaza's more than 2 million population after nearly two years of war have devastated the Palestinian enclave, killing tens of thousands of people and causing widespread hunger. Israel has often said Hamas militants infiltrate aid groups, while humanitarian organizations have urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government to ease aid restrictions.

Iran president dismisses Netanyahu's call for uprising

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday hit out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's call for Iranians to rise up against their government over power and water shortages. Netanyahu's video message on Tuesday came as Iran grapples with persistent water and electricity shortages amid spells of hot weather. It also came just two months after a 12-day war between the arch-foes, which began with Israel's unprecedented attack on Iranian military and nuclear infrastructure as well as residential areas. In his remarks, the Israeli premier called on Iranians to 'take risks for freedom', 'take to the streets' and demand accountability from the Iranian government. He suggested bringing Israeli water experts to provide 'cutting-edge technology and know-how' to Tehran. In a post on X, Pezeshkian hit out at Netanyahu. 'The regime that deprived the people of Gaza of water and food wants to bring water to the people of Iran? What a mirage!' said Pezeshkian. United Nations agencies have warned that famine is unfolding in the Gaza Strip, with Israel severely restricting the entry of aid. Images of sick and emaciated Palestinian children have drawn international outrage. Israel has denied the allegations. It has been fighting an intense and deadly war in the Palestinian territory against the militant group Hamas since October 2023. Netanyahu has a track record of producing such videos targeting Iran.

UK, France and Germany ready to reimpose sanctions on Iran over nuclear program

LONDON — The UK, France and Germany have told the UN they are ready to reimpose sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program if it fails to resume talks by the end of August. The three countries, known as the E3, said they were prepared to trigger a "snapback" mechanism - meaning previous sanctions would be reinstated - unless Iran resumes negotiations. The E3 said they had offered to extend a deadline for negotiations to the end of August, which they said Iran has not replied to. Iranian lawmaker Manouchehr Mottaki said Iran's parliament was ready to withdraw from a nuclear deal which restricted its nuclear program if new sanctions were put in place, the Iranian Defa Press news agency reported. The E3's letter comes after initial talks between their delegations and Iranian diplomats took place in Istanbul, Turkey last month. In the letter to the UN and its chief António Guterres, three foreign ministers - Jean-Noël Barrot from France, David Lammy from the UK and Johann Wadephul from Germany - said they would enforce severe sanctions on Iran unless it agrees to limit its nuclear E3 said their offer of an extension to the negotiations "remained unanswered by Iran"."We have made it clear that if Iran is not willing to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, the E3 are prepared to trigger the snapback mechanism," the letter added they were committed to using "all diplomatic tools" to ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon - something Iran has denied intending to month, Iran said it was prepared for further talks but only once sanctions already in place were lifted and its right to a civilian nuclear programme was on Iran's nuclear programme were previously lifted in 2015 after Iran signed a nuclear deal with the E3, the US, Russia and China, agreeing limits on its nuclear operations and to allow international inspectors entry to its nuclear sites.
