Maddy Siegrist returns from knee injury, set to play for Wings against New York
NEW YORK (AP) — Dallas Wings forward Maddy Siegrist was set to play for the first time in nearly two months after returning from a knee injury Tuesday night. Siegrist missed 18 games after fracturing her right knee before playing against New York. 'I'm excited. Oh my gosh, yes,' Siegrist said. 'I'm excited to get back out there. As a competitor you always have expectations. I just want to feel good and comfortable. My minutes will be limited so that takes some of the pressure off.' Wings coach Chris Koclanes said Siegrist would be on a minutes restriction against the Liberty. Siegrist, who grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York, joked at shootaround that she would need to tell her dozens of family and friends in attendance to not chant for her to play more. 'I'll need to explain to my grandma that I can only play so many minutes,' she said laughing. Siegrist, the NCAA Division I scoring leader ahead of Caitlin Clark when she played for Villanova in 2022-23, was limited to 11 games in an injury-plagued rookie season two years ago. She averaged 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in 11 games and had her only double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards the game before she was injured, an 81-65 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on June 8. ___ AP WNBA:

Report: Patriots CB Marcellas Dial suffers torn ACL
New England Patriots' second-year cornerback Marcellas Dial has torn the ACL in his left knee and likely will miss the entire season, ESPN reported on Tuesday. Dial suffered the injury Monday during practice and was carted off the field. A sixth-round pick out of South Carolina in 2024, the 24-year-old Dial played in all 17 games as a rookie. He made his lone start in the final week of the season and posted five tackles. Otherwise, Dial was a key member of the Patriots' special teams -- making seven of his 12 tackles on kick coverage. Dial was regarded as a backup to starting cornerbacks Carlton Davis III and Christian Gonzalez. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

UFC champ Dricus Du Plessis reveals best opponent he's faced: 'One hell of a fight'
UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis has fought some tough competition throughout his tenure with the promotion, but one opponent especially stands out to him. Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) endured two hard-fought battles with Sean Strickland, but it was his recent title defense against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 that hit different. Du Plessis submitted Adesanya in Round 4 after a back-and-forth battle. "My toughest opponent to date, well that's a very open-ended question because there were fights that were the hardest for me," Du Plessis said in an interview with Betway South Africa. "I have to say probably Adesanya was the best guy I faced in his specific area, probably the fight I was most nervous for just in terms of how good he is. "He can catch you with anything, anytime. All the time I spent looking up to him and studying him because he was the benchmark. Knowing what he's capable of, I think he's the best guy I've faced and obviously if you watch that fight, it was one hell of a fight. It was a tough night at the office for both of us." Du Plessis will look to notch his third title defense when he takes on Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). The South African champ has finished all but two opponents in his career. "When you go on pure toughness, you have to go with either Brad Tavares or Sean Strickland," Du Plessis continued. "Just the amount of damage they were able to take and just keep going."
