Lithuania PM quits after investigations and protests
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced Paluckas' resignation to the media on Thursday morning.
A spokesperson for Paluckas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Paluckas, a newly established leader of the centre-left Social Democrats, rose to the role in late 2024 after a three-party coalition formed following parliamentary elections in October.
His entire cabinet is now expected also to resign, potentially leaving the country without an effective government weeks before Russia holds joint military exercises with neighbouring Belarus.
Lithuanian foreign policy is unlikely to change as a result of the government shake-up.
Nauseda, who was elected separately, is the country's face on the world stage and has been one of the most stalwart supporters of Ukraine in its fight against invading Russian forces.
Paluckas has recently been dogged by media investigations into his business and financial dealings.
Several media outlets published investigations in July regarding Paluckas' past and present ventures and alleged mishandlings, including ones more than a decade ago.
The Baltic country's anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies subsequently launched their own probes.
In a devastating blow to his reputation, the media also revealed that Paluckas never paid a significant part of a 16,500-euro ($A29,000) fine in connection with a 2012 criminal case dubbed the "rat poison scandal".
Paluckas was convicted of mishandling the bidding process for Vilnius's rat extermination services while serving as the capital city's municipality administration director.
Judges for the country's top court in 2012 ruled that he abused his official position by illegally granting privileges to the company that offered the highest price in the bid.
He was also sentenced to two years behind bars, but the sentence was suspended for one year and he ultimately was never imprisoned.
The Social Democratic party leader denied any wrongdoing regarding his business affairs, labelling the criticism as part of a "co-ordinated attack" by political opponents.
He resigned before the opposition could formally launch impeachment proceedings.
New coalition talks are expected to start shortly to form a new cabinet.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has had a "productive" conversation with his US counterpart Donald Trump about ending the war, sanctions on Russia and the finalisation of a US-Ukraine drone deal. His determination to keep going is prompted by his belief that Russia is winning and by scepticism that yet more US sanctions will have much of an impact after successive waves of economic penalties during 3.5 years of war, according to three sources familiar with discussions in the Kremlin. The Russian leader does not want to anger Trump, and he realises that he may be spurning a chance to improve relations with Washington and the West, but his war goals take precedence, two of the sources said. Putin's goal is to fully capture the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, which Russia has claimed as its own, and then to talk about a peace agreement, one of the sources said. "If Putin were able to fully occupy those four regions, which he has claimed for Russia, he could claim that his war in Ukraine had reached his objectives," said James Rodgers, author of the forthcoming book The Return of Russia. Zelenskiy said Ukraine was also ready to conclude a deal with the US on the purchase of Ukrainian drones that would amount to "one of the strongest agreements". He had earlier said the deal was worth around $US30 billion ($A46 billion). Ukraine is increasingly seeking financing and investment from its foreign partners to bolster its burgeoning domestic arms industry. Zelenskiy said Kyiv's European partners had so far pledged to buy more than $US1 billion ($A1.5 billion) in US weapons for Ukraine as part of a new scheme. Sweden, Norway and Denmark will contribute around $US500 million ($A774 million) the three countries said on Tuesday. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the money would be available immediately and that Denmark would be willing to consider additional funding later. Elizaveta Krivonogikh, a 22-year-old art school graduate living in Paris who is believed to be the leader's youngest daughter, shared the messages on her private Telegram, in line with her increasing openness on Instagram as she's started to share more images of herself, The New York Post reported. 'It's liberating to be able to show my face to the world again,' she wrote, according to German magazine Bild. 'It reminds me of who I am and who destroyed my life.' The Telegram chat, named 'Art of Luiza', references her work pseudonym Luiza Rozova. Ms Krivonogikh didn't explicitly name Putin in either post, but has also never shot down the popular theories surrounding her true parentage. The budding artist was born in 2003 after a suspected affair between Putin and her mother, Svetlana, the President's then-housekeeper. The bombshell was first revealed after a 2020 investigation by Russian media outlet Proekt, citing Ms Krivonogikh's 'phenomenal resemblance' to Putin. He isn't listed on her birth certificate, but 'Vladimirovna' was included, translating to 'daughter of Vladimir'. In 2021, slain journalist and Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny exposed Ms Krivonogikh's Instagram, which showcased her life of luxury and her family's staggering wealth that many have attributed to their connection with the country's pesident. While Ms Krivonogikh originally celebrated life in the spotlight, she retreated after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2021 and her Instagram was suddenly shut down. She's since returned to the platform, but was more reserved in her posting at first, hiding her face in many photos. She's now seemingly changed her tune – and swapped sides on the devastating war after previously mourning her inability to 'make an extra lap around my beloved St Petersburg'. Ms Krivonogikh has since denounced her previous lifestyle of obscene wealth, speaking openly against her alleged father's actions in Ukraine. She also works in a Parisian art gallery that specialises in anti-war works. Ms Krivonogikh also adopted an extra pseudonym, Elizaveta Rudnova, inspired by Putin's late ally Oleg Rudnov – a cheeky stab at her elusive parentage. Still, critics of Putin haven't quite bought her reshaped image and insist that she shouldn't be working in a space where she could be interacting with Ukrainians, regardless of her stance.
