Kerala aims to create 1 lakh jobs by 2026 through start-ups: Chief Minister
Holding that Kerala is now nationally and internationally recognised as a haven for start-ups, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Tuesday that the State was aiming to increase the number of start-ups in the State to 15,000 by 2026 to generate over one lakh new jobs.
He was speaking at an interaction programme with select personalities from various fields in the district, held as part of the fourth anniversary celebrations of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. The Chief Minister noted that the number of start-ups in the State has grown from 640 in 2016 to 6,300 at present, with total investments reaching ₹5,800 crore.
The IT sector too has seen substantial growth. The number of IT companies in Kerala has increased from 640 in 2016 to 1,106 today. Employment in the sector has nearly doubled from 78,068 jobs in 2016 to 1,48,000 currently. IT exports too have grown from ₹34,123 crore to ₹90,000 crore.
Knowledge hub
Highlighting Kerala's emergence as a hub for knowledge and innovation, the Chief Minister pointed out that three of the top 12 universities in India, as ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), are located in the State.
Industrial growth in the State has also seen a marked improvement, rising from 12% in 2016 to 17% now. This, the Chief Minister said, was achieved through a series of legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at making Kerala more business-friendly.
Under the LIFE Mission housing project, 4.5 lakh homes have already been completed, with another 50,000 nearing completion.
He also announced plans to declare Kerala an 'extreme poverty-free' State by November 1, noting that the State has managed to reduce extreme poverty by 78%.
Criticises Centre
The Chief Minister criticised the Central government for withholding the State's rightful share of funds, even during times of crisis. Despite this, Kerala has shown resilience, he said, with the State's own revenue growing from 26% in 2016 to 70% today, with a growth of ₹47,000 crore in just three years.
The interaction session featured guests from diverse fields, including professionals and community leaders. Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan presided over the session. Agriculture Minister P. Prasad was also present.

LDF free of dubious links unlike UDF with JEI: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan
Kozhikode: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched a scathing attack on UDF for accepting the support of Welfare Party, the political arm of Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) in Nilambur. Calling it a highly opportunistic move, he accused UDF of allying with anyone opposing LDF, regardless of the dangers it poses to society. At LDF campaigns in Chungathara and Moothedam on Friday, he said a desperate Congress and UDF, rattled by the growing public support for LDF, had abandoned their earlier positions. He said it's hard to digest that Congress leadership took the stand without the knowledge of IUML leadership and asked what was the reason for the party to ditch its earlier stand on the matter. "For nine years, they were not in power and now they are willing to join hands with anyone for votes," he said. "Some sections were kept away because of their stand on various issues. JEI is one such organization. When they (UDF) reached a point where they can no longer hold ground on their own, they chose to blatantly align with anyone," alleged Vijayan, adding that our society is capable of recognizing the same. Vijayan said everyone knows that LDF would not venture into such unholy agreements. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "We have always made it clear that LDF does not need the support of divisive, sectarian or communal forces," he added. Vijayan said it would be good for IUML's leadership to remember why the then heads of Panakkad Thangal family did not attend the programmes organized by institutions affiliated to JEI. "It was because they knew what JEI is," he added. Vijayan came down heavily on AICC general secretary KC Venugopal for his alleged comment that LDF govt was trying to turn the distribution of welfare pensions into a bribe before bypolls. "What kind of bankruptcy is that? It reflects the anti-poor mindset of Congress. But LDF govt will go ahead with whatever it announced and disburse amounts at appropriate time," he added. Vijayan reiterated his 'betrayal' remarks in a reference to former Left-backed independent MLA PV Anvar saying that the byelection was forced on the people due to his actions. Nilambur bypoll: CPM indulging in communal politics, says opposition leader VD Satheesan
Kozhikode: Opposition leader VD Satheesan accused CPM of openly indulging in 'communal politics' in Nilambur. He also challenged chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to present the govt's achievements over the past nine years. Speaking to reporters in Nilambur, Satheesan alleged that the CPM cadres have been asked to go to houses and seek votes by raking up communal politics. Satheesan added that sensing the strong public resentment against the LDF govt, CPM was now trying to shift focus by invoking Palestine among other issues. "During the last parliamentary election, they raised issues like CAA and Palestine only to go silent after the polls. Congress, in contrast, has consistently shown solidarity with the people of Palestine," Satheesan said. Satheesan also hit out at the chief minister over the latter's criticism of the UDF's decision to accept support of Welfare Party, the political arm of Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI). "It was Pinarayi Vijayan himself, as party secretary, who had earlier welcomed support from JEI and PDP, calling it a strong and principled stance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I Tried the $0.87 Generic Viagra and Here's What Happened! fridayplans Learn More Undo No other chief minister in Kerala has contradicted himself like this. In 2011, JEI's support helped them come to power. Will the CPM now ask the two MPs from Tamil Nadu, who won with JEI's support, to resign?" Satheesan asked. Satheesan said that the decision to accept Welfare Party's support was a collective one taken by the UDF. He added that in 2021, when the Welfare Party supported LDF in Nilambur, the CM had no objections. "Like a chameleon, both the party and its leader are changing colours, insulting the intelligence of the public," he added. Meanwhile IUML state president Panakkad Sadikali Shihab Thangal said that Vijayan was trying to divert attention from the failures of LDF govt by criticizing IUML. Trans women share challenges, neglect at hearing
They find it difficult to rent a house. If at all a house becomes available, the rent suddenly doubles. Getting employment is a struggle. There are hurdles aplenty in changing their name on certificates. This in turn affects their junior research fellowship and other educational assistance. These are just some of the challenges and neglect listed by trans women at a programme organised by the Kerala Women's Commission here on Friday. On the innumerable hurdles around accommodation, the speakers pointed out that in Kochi, they were also asked to avoid guests. Even friends could not come to visit. Gender column It was not easy to change their name on certificates. Even failure to list their gender as transgender created difficulties. They could not apply for ration cards as a result. This primarily became an issue for private sector jobs. So, all certificates should have a gender column, the trans women demanded. A lot of time was also spent in changing name on all certificates if trans women decided to change their name. An adalat should be held to avoid this. All should get identity cards. At the same time, it should be examined if the cards were being misused. Self-employment programmes for trans women should be expanded. Financial aid for them should also be made available. The trans women demanded that they be included in the priority list under LIFE Mission. Steps should be taken to provide them with health insurance card. Hormonal medicines They demanded that hormonal medicines be made available in all district hospitals. The current facilities for sex reassignment surgery at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital should be expanded and specialty started. The demand to conduct awareness classes on gender for government employees was also raised at the discussion. Even women police constables had no knowledge of what transgender meant. This had resulted in terrible experiences with the police, it was alleged by some trans women. If they filed a police complaint, they were not given a receipt in return or an investigation conducted, they said. Nearly 150 trans women attended the hearing in which Kerala Women's Commission chairperson P. Satheedevi said the problems faced by trans women would be brought to the attention of the government. She underlined the need for trans women to earn their livelihood through dignity, not be seeking alms. They should be assured equality in employment, education, and housing. Kerala should be transformed into a State that can be proud of ensuring gender justice for all, she said.
