Carpenter hits 3 homers as the Tigers reach 40 wins by pounding the White Sox 13-1
CHICAGO (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a career-high three homers and drove in five runs to help the Detroit Tigers pound the lowly Chicago White Sox 13-1 on Monday night.
Dillon Dingler and Wenceel Pérez also went deep as Detroit became the first major league team to reach 40 wins this season. Parker Meadows had two hits and scored three times in his season debut after being sidelined by an arm injury.
Jack Flaherty (4-6) pitched six innings of one-run ball in his second straight win. The right-hander allowed four hits, struck out four and walked one.
The Tigers improved to 22-9 in their last 31 games. It was their 11th consecutive win at the White Sox dating to Sept. 1, 2023, matching a franchise record for the longest such streak in an opponent's ballpark.
Chicago finished with five hits in its seventh loss in eight games. Chase Meidroth singled and scored on Vinny Capra's groundout in the sixth, accounting for the team's only run.
Carpenter hit a two-run drive in Detroit's three-run first against Jonathan Cannon (2-7). He connected for another two-run shot in the fourth and a solo drive in the sixth for his 13th homer on the season.
He batted again with two runners on in the eighth. Amid chants of 'Kerry! Kerry!' by the Tigers fans in a crowd of 11,852, he flied out to center.
Detroit also had a big night in the field.
Meadows robbed Andrew Benintendi of a run-scoring hit with a diving catch in center for the last out of the first. Riley Greene hustled over for a terrific sliding grab on Meidroth's drive near the line in left in the third.
But catcher Dingler and third baseman Zach McKinstry combined for what might have been the team's best defensive play in the fifth. Dingler slid as he went after Joshua Palacios' foul popup and the ball went off his glove to McKinstry for the out.

Former MLB exec blasts Royals' 'irresponsible' move with top prospect Jac Caglianone
Kansas City was ecstatic when the Royals called up their top prospect, Jac Caglianone, but one former MLB executive called it the "single-most irresponsible move I've seen in quite a long time." Former Miami Marlins team president David Samson vocalized his displeasure with the Royals' front office bringing Caglianone up to the big leagues despite his success in the minors. It wasn't Caglianone's performance Samson was referencing in his opinion. It has to do with service time. "If he's going to be that good, how do you call him up now where he will hit arbitration a full year earlier than if they waited until after around June 17?" Samson wondered. "I have no idea how a team that's not in the top 10 of payroll is not paying attention to dates. And the Royals forcing the issue, that's a bunch of horse hockey. You take the extra two weeks because it gives you an extra year and compounds itself in arbitration." Caglianone will reach arbitration a year early because Kansas City brought him up before the Super Two deadline. Service time has been a debated topic for some time among baseball experts and fans because teams do have the ability to keep prospects down on the farm to ensure another year of control. But Kansas City clearly doesn't mind bringing up Caglianone now. He was just called up, but Caglianone is one of the top prospects in baseball and has been raking in the minors this year with a .322/.389/.593 slash line with 15 homers and 56 RBIs between Double-A and Triple-A. Samson believes calling up Caglianone now puts more pressure on him to perform right away because of the service time scenario. "This is a $10 million decision they made. Cyclists converge in Wisconsin for Epic Bike Fest
With only days until he races on his home course in Wisconsin, pro cyclist Daxton Mock is training in the rain. "You gotta push through it," said Mock. The 24-year-old won both races in last year's Epic Bike Fest across Wisconsin's Northwoods. "In the National Forest, ripping corners, up, down. It keeps it interesting," he said. "The trails are so good here." The three-day festival features single track races from Hayward to Cable through the Sawyer and Bayfield county forests on Saturday. "You don't see long stretches of single track like this in any other place around the Midwest," said Kristy Maki, event director for the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation. "So to be able to do a 37-mile race on single track, point to point, is pretty unusual and pretty unique for anywhere in the country." Sunday, riders and racers tackle a 50-mile gravel road race, which Mock describes as "just unreal." "You also have a big mental component on watching out for sand and rocks and different features on a gravel race, too," said Maki. There's also a half-distance option for both races, adding to the appeal for riders of different interests and fitness levels. "We are now over 1,000 riders and racers for the weekend," said Maki. That growth has allowed Epic Bike Fest to raise over $200,000 for trail development at Mt. Telemark Village and the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association. "It's really important for me because I train on them all the time," said Mock. "I think having a spot and place up north in northern Wisconsin, where there's maybe not so much other things to do, it's really great." It's a chance for Mock to show off his skills, and show off what makes this area so special. "The community is amazing here and it seems to grow every year," he said. On-and-off showers are expected to continue this week in Wisconsin's Northwoods, but festival organizers say that shouldn't impact this weekend's races. Saturday should be dry for the single track and Sunday could see rain — but on the gravel, it won't be a problem. Registration is still open for all of the races.
