Uncertain future for Dumfries branch of Claire's as fashion firm enters administration
Staff at the Dumfries branch of Claire's face an uncertain future after the firm entered administration.
More than 2,000 jobs are at risk across the UK and Ireland after the fashion accessories chain called in advisory firm Interpath.
They are looking for a potential rescue deal for the firm, which has more than 300 stores – including in the Loreburn centre in Dumfries.
Interpath's Will Wright and Chris Pole have been appointed joint administrators, with the move coming after parent company Claire's Holdings LLC began voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in the United states.
Mr Wright said: 'Claire's has long been a popular brand across the UK, known not only for its trend-led accessories but also as the go-to destination for ear piercing.

DWP report reveals PIP claimants may be missing out on thousands in payments
The latest report from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) shows thousands of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants could be getting paid less than they're entitled to - here's what we know The most recent Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) statistics reveal more than 3.7 million people throughout Great Britain are currently receiving Personal Independence Payment (PIP). But fresh data released in the 2024/25 Fraud and Error in the Benefit System report suggests 11 out of every 100 recipients (11 per cent) are receiving less than they're entitled to because they haven't informed authorities of changes to their situation. PIP holds the second-highest unfulfilled eligibility rate - previously known as claimant error - amongst all benefits and has relatively substantial spending, accounting for 30 per cent of total unfulfilled eligibility in the previous year. The unfulfilled eligibility figure for PIP reached £1,060 million (4.1 per cent of the total budget), up from £870 million (four per cent) in 2023/24, reports the Daily Record. According to the DWP, all unfulfilled eligibility resulted from claimants "failing to inform the Department they needed more help, or their condition had deteriorated." The report indicates £25.8 billion was allocated to PIP in the past year, marking a considerable rise from the £21.6 billion expenditure in 2023/24. PIP provides between £29.20 and £187.45 weekly, and it's crucial to understand that payment amounts depend on how someone's condition affects their daily living and mobility requirements - not simply the condition alone. The benefit aims to assist people with additional expenses arising from a disability, long-term illness, or physical or mental health condition. However, a recent fraud and error report reveals that as many as 402,500 PIP claimants are not receiving the correct amount of financial support they are entitled to. PIP payment rates Those on the standard or higher daily living or mobility component now receive: Standard daily living rate - £73.90 per week, £295.60 per pay period Enhanced daily living rate - £110.40 per week, £441.60 per pay period Standard mobility rate - £29.20 per week, £116.80 per pay period Enhanced mobility rate - £77.05 per week, £308.20 per pay period Changes you do not need to report to DWP Since PIP is not a means-tested benefit and can be paid regardless of whether the claimant is working or not, there is no need to inform the DWP if you: Start a new job Stop claiming other benefits Change roles at work - unless the amount of help you need has changed Leave a job Are made redundant Take retirement Changes you must report to DWP However, guidance on the website states you must contact the PIP enquiry line if: Your personal details change - for example, your name, addres,s or doctor The help you need or your condition changes Your condition has worsened and you're not expected to live more than six months You go into hospital or a care home You go abroad (for more than four weeks) You are imprisoned or held in detention The website goes on to warn: 'You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances.' So, if you've recently relocated or changed your GP, don't delay in reporting these changes - particularly if you're a PIP recipient living in Scotland. This is because Social Security Scotland will utilise the information held by the DWP when transitioning you over to the new devolved benefits system. Here's how to report a change of circumstances to the DWP: Before you make the call, ensure you have your National Insurance number, bank account details, and the name and address of your GP. These are required for the DWP to confirm your identity.

Tens of millions of rare Queen Elizabeth II £1 coins enter circulation across the UK

More than 23,000,000 Queen Elizabeth II £1 coins are being distributed alongside 7.5 million fresh King Charles III £1 coins. The Royal Mint stated that the last of the Elizabeth II coins, bearing the date 2022, are the scarcest £1 coins currently in active use. This combined release of more than 30 million coins marks a historic moment for UK currency, as the country observes the transition from Britain's longest-serving monarch to her son and successor on the £1 denomination, the Royal Mint explained. Queen Elizabeth's £1 coins will be the last ones displaying the late Queen's image to reach circulation, reports the Manchester Evening News. Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: "This release represents a pivotal moment in British coinage history. "As we release more of the King Charles III £1 coins into circulation alongside the final coins of Queen Elizabeth II, we're witnessing the physical representation of our monarchy's transition. "This dual release creates an exceptional opportunity for both seasoned numismatists and those new to coin collecting." The Royal Mint is urging the public to examine its change over the forthcoming weeks, as the fresh coins start to emerge in pockets and tills nationwide. Ms Morgan went on: "Finding these new coins in your change could spark a rewarding hobby that connects you with the heritage, history and craftsmanship behind British currency." Since the King's image was first introduced on UK coinage in 2023, only the 50p and £1 coins featuring Charles's portrait have been circulated. The King's £1 coins, which showcase a detailed bee design on the reverse, are part of the Definitive collection, inspired by the British Isles' rich flora and fauna. Around 2.975million £1 coins bearing the King's image were released in August last year. In total, approximately 24.7 billion coins are currently in circulation across the UK, with the King's coins making up a mere 0.004 per cent of this number, making these new coins highly sought after by collectors. All UK coins that bear the Queen's portrait will continue to be legal tender and remain in active circulation to ensure a smooth transition and minimise both environmental impact and cost. ScotRail hit by IT 'network outage' as passengers unable to buy tickets
The IT issues have left several passengers unable to buy tickets. ScotRail's ticket and payment systems have been hit by a "network outage", leaving many passengers unable to buy train tickets. IT issues are affecting passengers using the country's busiest stations, including Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley, on Wednesday, August 20. The rail operator said its internet service provider is experiencing a "network outage" at a "small number of locations" across the country. Passengers have reported problems buying tickets on the ScotRail app as well as machines within stations. A warning on the app for trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh also states: "Customer information screens and live departure boards may be showing inaccurately at ScotRail stations." Alan Manclark, ScotRail's head of IT, said: "We're aware of an issue being experienced by our internet service provider, which is affecting connectivity at a small number of locations across the country, including Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central, and Glasgow Queen Street. In an unrelated incident this morning, a person tragically died after being struck by a train near Stirling. Lines were previously closed between Stirling and Perth at around 6.50am, following the incident. They later reopened, but services were subject to delays and cancellations. The British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to a report of a casualty on the tracks just before 5am today (20 August) near Bridge of Allan railway station. "Officers and paramedics attended and sadly a person was pronounced deceased. The incident is not thought to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Procurator Fiscal."
