Nainital: A 33-year-old man from Shyamkhet, a village near Bhowali in Nainital district, was killed on Wednesday when a boulder fell on him while he was taking his sister-in-law home from the hospital on his two-wheeler.
The victim, Ramesh Chandra, was struck on the head by the falling rock. Despite wearing a helmet, he was knocked unconscious and rushed to hospital, where he died of head injuries. This was the sixth such fatality in Nainital within 72 hours.
The tragedy adds to a series of similar incidents across Uttarakhand. On Tuesday, a man in Chamoli's Dumak village died after being hit by a boulder on his way home. Two others were killed in Uttarkashi and a 12-year-old boy in Pithoragarh died after rocks crashed onto his house.
On Aug 18, Champa Devi, the elected sarpanch of Pokhari gram panchayat in Okhalkanda block, Nainital, was killed when a boulder dislodged by a landslide struck her while she was collecting fodder in a forest near Talli Pokhari Chaksedla village. Villagers took her to hospital, but she died en route. The Okhalkanda SDM said, "The cause appeared to be a natural calamity, pending postmortem confirmation."
A day later, another incident laid bare the grim reality of life in the state's inaccessible regions.

In Bhimtal's Kasaila Tok in Maluwatal, villagers carried an ailing elderly woman, Ganga Devi, in a palanquin across a swollen Gaula River. With no road connectivity or nearby medical facilities, they trekked several kilometres through treacherous terrain.
According to residents, such journeys are routine during emergencies, from childbirth to injuries, and have long demanded the construction of the Bhatelia-Amdo-Duduli motor road and a bridge from Amdo to Tyona.
"We risk lives every time someone falls ill. Many deaths are not just due to natural disasters, but because help arrives too late," a villager said.
Congress leader Manoj Sharma added, "Despite fertile land, farmers cannot transport produce to markets, students lack access to higher education and youth are migrating. Villagers accused the BJP-led state govt of failing to complete the proposed road over the last decade."
Local MLA Ram Singh Kaira said he has submitted a proposal for a bridge to the administration.
Meanwhile, healthcare services in the district remain crippled. Patients said that critical equipment, including the CT scan machine, has been non-functional for over two months. X-ray facilities often break down, forcing staff to rely on manual procedures. Infrastructure issues compound the crisis. Deep potholes along major routes, including the Nainital-Bhowali and Nainital-Haldwani roads, pose serious risks to two-wheeler riders, especially during the monsoon.
Chief development officer Nainital, Anamika (uses first name only), said she has directed the immediate removal of debris and soil from roadsides to reduce congestion and accidents.

Punjab BJP working president dares CM Mann: ‘why getting scared…fight us politically'

Punjab BJP leader Ashwani Sharma Thursday dared Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to fight the saffron party politically instaed of 'getting scared' and 'forcibly halting' party's awareness camps for central schemes. 'I want to ask Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann to fight a political battle. Why are you getting scared of the BJP?' Don't you want the poor to get benefits of the central schemes,' Sharma, the Punjab BJP working president said. Sharma was addressing media after leading a party delegation that met Governor Gulab Chand Kataria seeking his intervention over Punjab Police detaining its leaders and workers at 39 places in state where they were conducting outreach programme 'BJP De Sewadar, Aa Gaye Tuhade Dwar' to 'ensure that the poor, the scheduled caste community, farmers, youth and women get the benefits of public welfare schemes of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre'. The BJP also alleged that several party leaders were detained. They include Sunny Kainth, president of BJP Rural (Ludhiana) from his Flower Enclave office; former Jalandhar MP Sushil Kumar Rinku from Adampur; senior BJP leader K D Bhandari from Shahkot in Jalandhar; Pathankot district BJP president Suresh Kumar; and Preetpal Sharma from Gidderbaha, who switched from the AAP to the BJP in November last year. BJP leader Vandana Sangwan and Fazilka district president Kaka Kamboj were detained from the Raipur village in Fazilka during a camp in the morning. Sharma said his party will burn effigies of the AAP government in each Vidhan Sabha constituency on Friday. Earlier, in the memorandum submitted to the Governor, the delegation alleged that there was 'deliberate harassment' being inflicted upon the party workers, volunteers, and the innocent inhabitants of several villages across Punjab, where awareness camps have been initiated to spread vital information about the central government welfare schemes. 'Our party workers and volunteers, with the consent and active participation of the local residents, have been conducting these awareness camps in different villages,' said the memorandum. The delegation accused the Punjab government 'of creating obstacles in this noble cause'. 'In almost every camp, the state police and local administration have intervened to stop BJP workers and volunteers from providing information. This disruption is being justified on two pretexts–that prior permission from the Deputy Commissioner/SDM is required, and that parties are allegedly collecting personal data of the inhabitants,' it said. No such permission is mandated under any law for awareness programmes of this nature, and the allegation regarding data collection is false, baseless, and politically motivated. Further the volunteers and workers engaged in these camps hold valid Common Service Centre (CSC) IDs. Hence, there is no illegality in the conduct of such programmes,' it said. The allegation regarding data collection is false, baseless, and politically motivated, it said. The BJP delegation urged the Governor to direct the Punjab government to immediately desist from 'harassing' BJP workers, volunteers, and local inhabitants who are voluntarily participating in these awareness programmes. Later, Sharma said the BJP workers just acted as a bridge by telling the poor about the camps. He claimed that so far 1.57 lakh people have availed the benefits of these camps which began in May.

In Ghaziabad, vehicle thefts peak at noon, chain snatchings after dark

Ghaziabad: They say time is money. Criminals in the district have taken it to another level — setting aside certain crimes for sunset and before that. Police data says while most chain-snatching cases take place after sunset, vehicle thefts are usually carried out before that. According to a TOI analysis — covering the period from April 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025 — about 59% of chain snatching incidents happened at night across the district, totalling 240 cases. A senior police officer said that so far, more than 450 snatchers were arrested this year. After sunset, between 6pm and 6am, the number increased to 141. Peak incidents occurred between 10pm and midnight. Between 10pm and midnight, the number of incidents peaked at 51 over the past year. During the same period, a total of 2,212 vehicle thefts took place in Ghaziabad and the analysis shows that maximum vehicle thefts took place between 12 noon and 4pm, with 450 incidents, including 376 two-wheelers. However, vehicle thefts peak between afternoon and midnight hours. A total of 430 vehicle thefts, including 366 two-wheelers, occurred between 8pm and midnight. A total of 410 vehicles, including 346 two-wheelers, were stolen between 4am and 8am and 234 vehicles, including 197 two-wheelers, were stolen between midnight and 4am. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo During the time periods of 4pm to 8pm and 8am to 12 noon, 344 vehicles, including 282 two-wheelers, were stolen each time. As for chain snatchings in Ghaziabad after sunset, there was a noticeable increase in robberies after 6pm. In the morning, from 4am to 10am, when most residents went for morning walks, the gym, or to offices, 24 chain snatchings occurred. Most of the robberies during this time occurred near parks, gyms and victims' houses. Previously, it was found that snatchers targeted individuals in the morning due to a lack of police presence on the roads and lower foot traffic. However, a new trend has been observed from 12 noon to 4pm, with 66 people becoming victims of chain snatching incidents in just four hours. After sunset, criminals became more aggressive and exploited the darkness, targeting more people. The number increased every hour. A total of 23 chain snatching incidents took place from 6pm to 8pm, increasing to 47 from 8pm to 10pm and reaching 51 from 10pm to midnight. Indirapuram was the hotspot for chain-snatching incidents, with a total of 66 cases reported over the past year (April 1, 2024, to April 30, 2025). This is about 27% of the total such crimes registered during the period across the district. Kavi Nagar and Kaushambi shared the second position on the list, each recording 20 incidents. Nandgram ranked third as the area with the highest number of chain-snatching incidents, where 17 incidents took place. Masuri and Bhojpur, with just one snatching case, were found to be the safest for residents and pedestrians. This was followed by Niwari and Tronica City, with only two incidents each. Surprisingly, 1,845 two-wheelers were stolen out of the 2,212 vehicles: 83% were two-wheelers, while 10% were four-wheelers and 7% were three-wheelers. The maximum number of vehicle lifting cases comes from Indirapuram, with 235, followed by Kavi Nagar with 228 and Loni with 153. In May this year, thieves made off with a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle from the State Tax Building, Collectorate Compound, Raj Nagar, under the jurisdiction of Kavi Nagar police station. Police officials identified the motorcycle owner as Surendra Kumar, who serves as chief assistant in the state tax department. In May this year, another vehicle theft of a motorcycle occurred at the Govindpuram Sunday market under the jurisdiction of Kavi Nagar police station. The police identified Pradeep Kumar, a Meerut resident, as the victim. He reported that he parked his HF Deluxe motorcycle (UP15 CX0224) at the weekly market whilst shopping. Upon returning an hour later, his vehicle vanished. Nimish Patil, DCP of Trans-Hindon, said that in 2024, there was a 25% decline in snatchings in the Trans-Hindon area, while this year, a 15% decline has been seen. "A few steps were taken, like more CCTV cameras were installed. A team of police inspected all the shops in the market and put an eye towards the road and helped the shopkeepers and people to install the cameras with proper guidelines," he said. "We made a hotspot for snatchings and vehicle thefts in the Trans-Hindon area, like there are seven hotspots in Indirapuram, five in Shalimar Garden, four in Sahibabad and three in Kaushambi and Link Road. A police team is deployed at these points for 24 hours and we also deploy police officers in civil dress in local markets," he said. A senior police officer said that the district has a total of 120 PRVs and 240 cheetah bikes patrolling the city. "Every police station in Ghaziabad has its own PC mobile vehicles. We have also increased our visibility on the roads. We have identified the hotspots of street crimes and will deploy teams accordingly. We also plan to form a special team in every police station to tackle such crimes," the officer said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Jails in Noida & Ghaziabad bursting at the seams

Noida: NCR jails are overcrowded, with inmate occupancy at a staggering 200% of the sanctioned capacity. In Noida, Luksar prison currently houses 2,760 inmates, which is 276% more than its capacity to hold 1,000 inmates, while Dasna jail in Ghaziabad houses 3,910 inmates against its capacity of 1,704. Various efforts under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NLSA) through respective state legal service authorities and district legal service authorities are ongoing for the release of undertrial prisoners, but it has not yet made a notable difference in the crowding of NCR jails. But 15 new inmates were sent to Dasna jail and one to Luksar the same day. Administration of both jails did not confirm any special drive to release inmates as per the recommendation of the Sentence Review Board on Independence Day this year. According to a report by NLSA, a majority of the prisoners lodged in various jails of the country are undertrial prisoners. As of Jan 2025, of 84,810 prisoners in jails of UP, 65,010, corresponding to nearly 77%, were undertrial prisoners.
