Stronger trading drives weekly gains on MSX
MUSCAT: Trading activity on the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) picked up pace last week, with average daily volumes rising 19.2 per cent to RO 13.1 million, compared to RO 11 million the previous week. This increase came despite a shorter trading week due to the Eid al Adha holiday.
The uptick was fuelled by robust investor interest in companies affiliated with the Oman Investment Authority, which reported strong financial results. Local institutional investors and funds were also active net buyers, accounting for 69.3 per cent of total trading value.
The combined trading value for the week reached RO 39.3 million. Notable contributors included OQ Basic Industries (RO 7.69 million), OQ Gas Networks (RO 6.1 million), OQ Exploration and Production (RO 6.07 million), and Asyad Shipping (RO 4.69 million). Together, these four companies accounted for 62.4 per cent of total trading.
Despite the increased activity, the MSE's main index slipped by 35 points to close at 4,543 points, ending a six-week streak of gains amid profit-taking in key stocks. The industrial index fell 94 points, financials were down 44 points, services dropped by 12 points, and the Shariah index edged down 3 points to 441.
Market capitalisation rose by RO 82 million, closing at RO 28.88 billion. This was largely driven by gains in OQ Exploration and Production, whose market cap increased by RO 136 million after shares climbed by 17 baisas to 312 baisas.
The company has scheduled an extraordinary general assembly for June 24 to consider amending its articles of association, including a proposal to allow share buybacks.
Elsewhere, Al Anwar Investments invited shareholders to its AGM on June 30 to discuss a 4 baisa-per-share dividend and 4 per cent bonus shares. The company's shares ended the week at 85 baisas.
Meanwhile, Fincorp Financial Services announced plans to exit the brokerage sector and transition into investment activities, pending approval from the Financial Services Authority and shareholder consent at an EGM on June 29.
In the education sector, the Omani Education and Training Investment Company reported a net profit of RO 7.2 million for the first nine months of its fiscal year ending 31 August—up from RO 6.5 million in the same period last year. — ONA

RO 4.5 million in development projects in Al Batinah South
AL RUSTAQ: Al Batinah South Governorate is pressing ahead with a series of infrastructure and development projects worth RO 4.5 million, aimed at stimulating investment, trade and tourism across its wilayats. The projects are being overseen by the Governor's Office through its Development Committee, which plays a key role in advancing the governorate's strategic growth agenda. According to Saud bin Said al Maawali, Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Council and Head of the Development Committee, the projects reflect broader efforts to strengthen the local economy, support small and medium enterprises (SMEs), generate employment for youth and enhance infrastructure and tourism offerings. Al Maawali said the projects are aligned with Oman's decentralisation policy and form part of the national economic transformation strategy under the Tenth Five-Year Plan and Oman Vision 2040. 'We are focusing on initiatives that not only enhance public services and amenities but also promote economic vibrancy and community well-being,' he added. Among the major undertakings is the Barka Waterfront Development Project in Al Muraisi, which stretches over two kilometres and is designed to become a major recreational and tourism hub. With an investment of RO 1.9 million and 55% of construction completed, the project will feature sports and entertainment facilities, support services for tourists and designated investment zones aimed at creating jobs for locals. In Al Musannah, a similar waterfront development is underway in Al Awaid at a cost of RO 1.7 million. Currently 35% complete, the project spans two kilometres and includes plans for restaurants, commercial outlets, children's play areas and sports facilities to enhance the area's appeal for residents and visitors alike. Other key initiatives include the Wadi Al Maawil Commercial Market, which is nearly complete with a 95% construction rate. Covering 16,000 square metres and comprising 27 shops, the RO 319,000 project is expected to become a focal point for commerce and tourism in the wilayat. Meanwhile, the Al Awabi Commercial Market, built over 1,200 square metres with an investment of RO 200,000, has reached 70% completion. The project will house 16 shops and is part of ongoing efforts to revitalise economic and social activity in Al Awabi. Another significant development is the upgrade of Nakhal Public Park, which is 70% complete at a cost of RO 452,000. Enhancements include new recreational facilities and improved infrastructure to transform the park into a major family and tourism destination. The project also includes three dedicated spaces for SMEs and local family businesses, offering fresh investment opportunities in Nakhal and surrounding areas.— ONA

OETC receives ratings from Moody's and Fitch for sukuk, GMTN programmes
Muscat – Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has received inaugural ratings from both Moody's Ratings and Fitch Ratings for its newly established sukuk and Global Medium-Term Note (GMTN) programmes, supporting the company's capital investment and debt refinancing strategy. Moody's has assigned a (P)Ba1 rating to the backed senior unsecured trust certificate issuance programme (sukuk programme) of Al Jawaher Assets Company, a special purpose vehicle established by OETC. It has also assigned a (P)Ba1 rating to the senior unsecured GMTN issuance programme established under OETC. The outlook on both ratings is stable, according to Moody's. Moody's stated that the (P)Ba1 rating on the sukuk programme is at the same level as OETC's Ba1 corporate family rating. 'This is because potential certificate holders (1) will be effectively exposed to OETC's senior unsecured credit risk; (2) will not have any preferential claim or recourse over the trust assets, or rights to cause any sale or disposition of the trust assets except as expressly provided under the transaction documents; and (3) will only have rights against OETC, ranking pari passu with other senior unsecured obligations as provided in the transaction documents,' Moody's said in a statement. 'As such, a change in OETC's rating will be reflected in the ratings of the sukuk programme and any certificates issued under the programme. The sukuk structure will consist of Ijara assets (an asset sale and lease-back transaction). Our rating of the sukuk programme does not express an opinion on the structure's compliance with Shariah law,' the agency added. In a similar vein, Moody's has also assigned a (P)Ba1 rating to the new GMTN programme. Bonds issued under the GMTN programme will rank pari passu with other senior unsecured obligations of OETC. 'As part of its funding plans, OETC is expected to issue bonds and sukuk under these newly established programmes for general corporate purposes, including the refinancing of existing debt and funding of ongoing capital investments,' Moody's added. Moody's noted that OETC's ratings continue to be supported by: a stable and transparent regulatory framework for electricity transmission and the independence of the regulator; the cost-recovery mechanisms within the regulatory framework; the low business risk profile of electricity transmission activities; the company's monopoly position in Oman; and supportive shareholders. The stable outlook reflects Moody's expectation of OETC's sustained operating performance over the next 12 to 18 months. Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has assigned a 'BB+' rating to OETC's sukuk trust certificate programme, issued through trustee Al Jawaher Assets Company. Fitch has also given a 'BB+' rating to the company's GMTN programme. 'The ratings reflect the programmes' final terms and are in line with OETC's Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) and senior unsecured rating. OETC is using the proceeds for general corporate purposes, including capital expenditure and debt refinancing,' Fitch said in a statement. It added that the sukuk programme's rating is aligned with OETC's IDR. This reflects Fitch's view that a default on these senior unsecured obligations would constitute a default by OETC, in accordance with the agency's rating definitions.

Food investments sector in Madayn exceed RO 164 million
MUSCAT: Investment in Oman's food industries sector continues to grow, with the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn) announcing a total investment volume exceeding RO 164 million across 98 projects. These ventures span more than 1.5 million square metres and provide employment for over 3,600 people across Madayn's various industrial cities. Khalid bin Sulaiman al Salhi, Director General of Marketing and Commercial Affairs at Madayn, revealed that 13 new food industry projects have been localised in the first five months of 2025, drawing in over RO 14 million in investment. These projects, covering 224,000 square metres, include production facilities for vegetable oils, flour, tuna, bottled water, food packaging, and logistics. Al Salhi confirmed that more projects are in the pipeline, with several contracts currently under review. Madayn has also designated specific zones for food industries in all its cities, including newly developed areas in Al Mudhaibi, Thumrait, and Suwaiq. One of the flagship initiatives under development is the "Madayn Agricultural Project," aimed at promoting sustainability and innovation in the food sector. In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Madayn also plans to establish greenhouse facilities in several industrial cities to bolster local food production and support entrepreneurship. In a step towards international collaboration, Madayn signed a memorandum of understanding with a South Korean company to set up a smart farming project focusing on Korean fruits and a farm-based café concept. Madayn is intensifying marketing efforts both locally and internationally to promote food sector investment, including participation in specialised trade exhibitions. The food industry is a cornerstone of Oman's industrial development and a critical contributor to the country's food security and economic diversification goals under Oman Vision 2040. — ONA
