England legend Peter Shilton finally loses staggering world record held for almost 30 years

Daily Mirror2 hours ago
Evergreen former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton played well into his 40s en route to a world record but that record has since been taken by Brazilian goalkeeper Fabio
Nearly 30 years after retiring from football, former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has finally lost his world record for the most appearances in the men's game. Shilton's tally is itself disputed, with the 75-year-old believing he is three shy of the 1,390 total in the Gunness Book of World Records, but the higher figure has now also been surpassed.

The new record-holder is Fabio, also a goalkeeper. Perhaps even more impressively, the Brazilian has achieved the feat without making a single appearance for his country's senior international side.

"I have nothing but reasons to thank God, who allowed me to experience this special moment, to reach this gigantic milestone," Fabio, 44, said after playing his 1,391st match in the Fluminense side which took on America de Cali on Tuesday. "It was incredibly moving to experience it, especially having my family by my side during the tributes.

"It's a huge satisfaction to reach this record wearing the Fluminense jersey, which opened doors for me. Now it's time to keep playing and strive for new achievements with each game,"
Fabio began his career as a teenager in the 90s, playing for third tier Uniao Banderante, before making his first appearance in Brazil's Serie A in 2000. He was in his 40s when he joined Fluminense, but has played 235 games for the club to go along with 976 for Cruzeiro, 150 for Vasco da Gama and 30 forUniao Banderante.
Despite not making a senior appearance for Brazil, Fabio has been called up by his country on multiple occasions. He first sat on the bench for the Selecao at the 2003 Confederations Cup, when Dida and Julio Cesar were the other two senior keepers in a squad also containing World Cup winning outfielders including Ronaldinho and Kleberson.
His last senior Brazil call-up came in 2011, for a friendly against Ghana. While he never made a World Cup squad, he was an unused substitute for the 2004 Copa America triumph.
Fabio was also part of Fluminense's squad for the expanded Club World Cup in the United States over the summer. He started all three games as the Brazilian side progressed from a group also containing Borussia Dortmund, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD, as well as as the surprise round of 16 victory over Inter Milan and the quarter-final defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

Shilton, who made his professional debut before the 1966 World Cup, counts 125 senior England caps and 13 Under-23 outings towards his total. He played more than 1,000 league games during a 30-year club career, finally hanging up his gloves after a spell with Leyton Orient in the 1996-97 season.
He played for the Three Lions at three World Cups, in 1982, 1986 and 1990. The second of those is best known for Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal in the game against Argentina which saw England eliminated from the tournament.

Ex-Celtic star hit with massive tax bill of nearly £500k – as judge takes cheeky pop at his playing career

The ex-Celtic midfielder was sent off as Craig Brown's men were humiliated by Morocco, crashing out of the 1998 tournament in France. In his decision published last week, Judge Mark Baldwin said: "Mr Burley used to be a professional footballer. '[His lawyer] Mr Cannon told us that he played for Scotland in the World Cup, although not how well Scotland fared." Burley invested some of his earnings as a TV pundit through a complex scheme backing new movies - but HMRC hit him with a whopping demand backdated to 2011. The 53-year-old appealed but the latest judgement by the First-Tier Tribunal means he will have to stump up £466,000 worth of cash. Judge Baldwin's stinging jibe will add insult to injury for the ESPN co-commentator, whose legal fees are likely to push his bill past £500,000. Burley - who also played for Chelsea and Derby County - played in all three games of Scotland's ill-fated campaign at France 98. In the opening match, they were beaten by reigning champions Brazil thanks to an own-goal by his Parkhead teammate Tom Boyd. Scotland then missed a stack of chances against Norway, eventually drawing 1-1 with Burley netting a second-half equaliser. But he was sent off for a late tackle in their final game against Morocco, who won 3-0 to leave Brown's team rock bottom of the group. Sarmiento launch a throw back shirt design inspired by Celtic Scotland have not been back to the World Cup finals since, but the new qualifying campaign to reach North America 2026 kicks off in Denmark next month. Burley retired as a player in 2004 with 46 international caps under his belt and has worked as a pundit for the BBC, ITV and BT Sport. The contested tax bill was run up between 2010/11 and 2016/17, during which time, ironically, he was working as a pundit on two World Cup finals. He put some of his earnings in two investment schemes, which looked to take advantage of tax breaks available for funding new films. But some of the profits were then distributed to a company, Craig Burley Ltd, that would pay a lower rate of corporation tax. The tribunal ruled Burley should pay the higher rate of PAYE on the whole amount. Judge Baldwin - who heard the case with JP John Agboola - is originally from Yorkshire. A retired corporate tax solicitor, he is also a professor at Durham Law School. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Red Roses name strongest possible team for World Cup opener

John Mitchell has named the strongest available starting XV for England's opening match of the Women's Rugby World Cup against the United States, with no changes to the side that dominated France 40-6 in the final warm-up. The only alteration to the 23-player squad is the selection of Emily Scarratt, 35, at her fifth World Cup, on the bench in place of Helena Rowland, who has a minor ankle injury. Zoe Aldcroft sat out training on Monday to manage her workload and is fit to captain the side from blind-side flanker, alongside Alex Matthews and Sadia Kabeya in the back row. Abbie Ward and Morwenna Talling are in the second row. Maud Muir starts at tight-head prop in preference to Sarah Bern, joining Hannah Botterman and Amy Cokayne in the front row. Natasha Hunt and Zoe Harrison are the half backs, and Tatyana Heard and Megan Jones link up in midfield. Jess Breach and Abby Dow are on the wings with Ellie Kildunne, the world women's player of the year, at full back. Kelsey Clifford, Maddie Feaunati and Emma Sing will make their World Cup debuts from the bench, and Lark Atkin-Davies, Rosie Galligan and Lucy Packer complete the replacements. Marlie Packer, one of four survivors from the 2014 world-champion side, is not involved in the opener. Claudia Moloney-MacDonald, usually a first-choice wing, is recovering from a minor leg injury. More than 40,000 tickets have been sold for Friday night's match against the USA at Sunderland's Stadium of Light. The Red Roses are on a 27-match winning streak and are heavy favourites to win the tournament. 'We have been building nicely into the tournament and now we're excited to get our campaign under way,' Mitchell, the head coach, said. 'Sunderland have been a great host city thus far and we know it'll be a record crowd for a Women's Rugby World Cup opening match, which shows the appetite for rugby in this region and for the competition ahead. 'We want to embrace the occasion while understanding we have to remain where our feet are and earn the right to progress through the pool stage.'
