Maple Grove day care teacher charged with second sexual assault of child within year
Ryan Vaughan, 38, was charged on Tuesday with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was also charged last October with one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Court documents say two days after Vaughan was charged last year, a parent notified police their 7-year-old daughter had been sexually assaulted by a teacher at her day care, identified as Vaughan, in Maple Grove, Minnesota, when she attended it last summer.
The parents of a 9-year-old girl reported to police in August that Vaughan sexually assaulted their daughter at the same day care, according to charging documents.
Both victims reported Vaughan inappropriately touching them and that he would tell them "not to tell anyone," and it was "a secret," charges say.
The 9-year-old girl told investigators she would ask Vaughan to stop, but he "would not listen to her."
Court documents reveal the state intends to use evidence that both girls were allegedly abused by Vaughan to show his intent and that it was not a "mistake or accident."
Vaughan's next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 11.

Man accused of shooting US politicians while posing as a police officer has charges upgraded
A man accused of murdering a US lawmaker and wounding another while pretending to be a police officer is facing upgraded state charges. Just a week after pleaded not guilty in court, a fresh indictment was announced on Thursday. In the state case against him, he now faces two charges of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder and charges of impersonating a police officer and animal cruelty for shooting one family's dog. Hennepin County attorney Mary Moriarty said the charges now "reflect the weight of Mr Boelter's crimes". There is also a federal case against Boelter, where he faces six counts of murder, stalking and firearms violations. The murder charges could carry the federal death penalty. In June, there was a manhunt after Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Senator John Hoffman, were shot dead in their Minnesota home. Police said they responded to gunfire reports at the home of Democrat senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, shortly after 2am and found them with multiple gunshot wounds. "The individual immediately fired upon the officers, who exchanged gunfire, and the suspect retreated back into the home" and escaped on foot, said Brooklyn Park police chief Mark Bruley. Authorities believe it was Boelter wearing a mask as he posed as a police officer and approached the victims' front doors. He is also thought to have used a vehicle resembling a squad car. Several AK-style firearms and a list of about 70 names, which included politicians and abortion rights activists, were allegedly found inside the vehicle later on.

Former Twin Cities school counselor recorded 13-year-old student changing, charges say
A former Twin Cities school counselor is accused of secretly recording a female student changing clothes. Jason Polzin, 50, previously worked at Maranatha Christian Academy in Brooklyn Park. He was charged Wednesday with one felony count of interference with the privacy of a minor under 18. Charges say Polzin allowed the 13-year-old victim to change clothes in his classroom prior to her softball game last May. The girl told police she had been changing when she noticed Polzin's phone was in the room and pointing at her. She allegedly checked the phone and saw that it was recording. Investigators say the victim reported the video showed Polzin looking at the door before he set the phone down and aimed it to point toward where she would be changing. She told police she felt "confused and angry" when she found out she had been recorded. The girl deleted the video and confronted Polzin about it, according to the criminal complaint. He allegedly claimed it was an accident. Charges say the victim reported the incident to school personnel, adding Polzin would give her rides and invited her to go on his boat. Maranatha Christian Academy says when it was made aware of the allegations against Polzin on May 23, 2024, the school immediately placed him on administrative leave and notified parents. His employment was officially terminated on June 3, 2024. Police conducted a search warrant at Polzin's Prior Lake home, where charges say they seized several electronic devices in which they found 52 photos of the victim, most of which had been taken in Polzin's school office. There were an additional 165 photos of the victim's face on a computer-generated female body, including criminal sexual abuse material. The Brooklyn Park Police Department says the case remains under investigation and it is working closely with Maranatha Christian Academy to identify and support any potential victims. "The safety and well-being of our students is, and will always be, our highest priority," said Deb Larson-Jarpe, Head of School for Marantha Christian Academy. "We have zero tolerance for any behavior that places students at risk and remain committed to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment." Polzin is in custody as of Wednesday. His bail has been set a $75,000 with conditions.
