TEN additional Dapur Digital (cloud kitchens) have been officially set up in Kuala Lumpur.
Their number now stands at 15 as five were initially established at People's Housing Projects in February last year.
Dapur Digital operates as a food preparation facility and economic hub, enabling micro-entrepreneurs to leverage technology to expand their market reach through digital platforms.
Under Budget 2025, the government announced the setting up of 30 cloud kitchens to help lower income groups.
Social enterprise Pepper Labs introduced the initiative jointly with the Prime Minister's Department, Finance Ministry, Yayasan Hasanah under Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
Pepper Labs managing director Thanaselan Rajendran said the 10 new cloud kitchens were part of Phase I of the expansion plan.
'All 15 kitchens have started functioning,' he said at a handover ceremony at Menara DBKL 1.
Thanaselan added that the five cloud kitchens established last year had successfully earned more than RM1.2mil in sales.
'This is the result of the firm collaboration between government agencies and entrepreneurs running the kitchens.
'We hope for more allocation to be given to this initiative in Budget 2026 to enable more kitchens to be set up.
'There are many PPRs in Kuala Lumpur and 15 kitchens are insufficient.'
At the event, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa presented mock keys to the 10 new Dapur Digital participants.
In her speech, Dr Zaliha asked Pepper Labs to help cloud kitchen entrepreneurs obtain halal certification from Malaysia Islamic Development Department.
'The halal industry has a big potential, given that it is projected to contribute up to 8.1% of Malaysia's gross domestic product this year,' she said.
The export revenue of halal products is also expected to reach RM56bil this year.
'On a global level, it is also projected that the halal industry would expand to RM22.34 trillion by 2030.
'Hence, obtaining halal certification can really help these entrepreneurs expand their business,' she said.

The Malaysian High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki said Zahid's visit is part of the government's ongoing commitment to further strengthen bilateral diplomatic relations that have been established for 68 years with New Zealand. The visit, she said, focuses on exploring opportunities for strategic cooperation covering various fields including defence, agriculture, education, halal industry as well as strategic cooperation. "This visit is expected to further strengthen the long-standing Malaysia-New Zealand bilateral relations across various areas of cooperation. "It also symbolises the continuation of the highest-level exchange of visits between the two countries, including the working visit by former Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir on May 2 to 4 in 2023," she said at a press conference here today. Obviously, it includes the continuation of the working visit by former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, cum Foreign Minister of New Zealand to Malaysia on June 6-9 2024; as well as the official visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Malaysia on Sept 1-3 2024. Zahid will also be accompanied by a delegation consisting of senior Malaysian government officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and the Prime Minister's Department. Mazita said that among the main contents of Zahid's visit are meetings with New Zealand's top leaders on July 16–17 in Wellington. He is expected to meet New Zealand's Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro and Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour, Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Maori Development Minister Tama Potaka as well as Agriculture, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay. The visit will also include Zahid's participation as chairman of the Halal Industry Development Council (MPIH) in a halal forum jointly organised by the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) which will witness the signing of a cooperation document between Malaysia and New Zealand on higher education. "In addition, it will also involve engagement sessions with New Zealand industry and business leaders including the ASEAN New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC) and the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Corporation (NZTE)," she said. Zahid, who is also the chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee (JPBP), will be visiting National Crisis Management Centre and will hold a Roundtable Session with the Māori community in Rotorua, she said. Zahid will also meet 250 members of the Malaysian community in New Zealand who are residents of the country. "This visit is seen as very much in line with Malaysia's role as Asen Chair for 2025. "It provides an opportunity for the Malaysian government to share initial achievements, directions and priorities under the theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability" within the Asean regional framework. "This visit thus reflects the government's commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting national interests and strengthening strategic cooperation between Malaysia and New Zealand," she said. The last time a Malaysian top leader visited New Zealand was the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who was the prime minister at the time in March 2005.

200,000 to be freed from bankruptcy, says Azalina

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic), who disclosed this, said about 186,000 have been discharged so far. She said the data was obtained by the Insolvency Department for the government to lend a helping hand to the affected group. 'We hope by the end of the year, we can tabulate (people released from bankruptcy status). In total, we hope to hit 200,000 this year,' she said after launching a Financial Literacy Programme for public and private higher education institution students organised by the department here yesterday, Bernama reported. In tabling Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Second Chance Policy would be expanded to benefit those aged 40 and below who have debts not exceeding RM200,000 starting last year. Azalina said a total of 25,578 bankruptcy cases were recorded from 2021 to May 2025, with 10,145 cases involving the 35 to 44 age group. She said men recorded higher bankruptcy cases than women, at 18,590 over that period. On the programme, Azalina said it was among the proactive steps taken by the government to update the people with financial management and literacy, especially students about to begin their careers. About 1,000 students from public and private universities and colleges were involved in the day-long programme.

It operates on a 'plural funding' model, combining resources from the government and external parties. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said over the past three years, DBKL's budget had risen by nearly 9%, from RM2.604bil in 2023 to RM2.835bil in 2025. 'The fiscal deficit has widened from RM275.9mil in 2024 to RM325.9mil in 2025. 'More than 62% of DBKL's revenue relies on assessment tax, creating a high dependency on a single source,' she said during the launch of the endowment fund at Institut Latihan DBKL, Cheras. The fund was developed based on the results of a joint study with Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) from last year to early this year. It was established as an alternative financial source to support community development, education, social welfare and environmental conservation in Kuala Lumpur. Dr Zaliha said, 'Besides carrying out functions like urban development and maintenance, DBKL also assists the Federal Territories Department in handling state-like functions such as social welfare, transportation and local community services. 'The burden of these support functions is amounting to over RM140mil annually and increasing each year.' Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, who was at the launch, said the fund was established as a long-term instrument to support various initiatives in the city in accordance with Section 39(d) of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171).
