Abel Avellan: The Elon Musk Rival Who Is Helping Connect Phones From Space

Washington:
AST SpaceMobile, a key rival of Elon Musk's Starlink, aims to establish a network to allow satellite internet to beam directly to smartphones even in the most remote areas. It will keep the devices connected even when they are not in the range of a tower.
For now, this is possible only via special hardware on expensive satellite phones.
AST SpaceMobile CEO and founder Abel Avellan told Forbes that the company's vision was to "provide connectivity without disadvantage to wherever people are located".
The company took an early step in this direction when it launched five satellites onboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral in September last year.
Each of them is equipped with a 700-square-foot antenna, which will unfold in orbit. The antenna sizes hold the key to Avellan's goal of major success in an all-new market. This will help beam satellite internet directly to smartphones.
On the other hand, SpaceX utilises thousands of satellites that connect one and all to the internet.
These 700-square-foot antennas will be succeeded by way larger 2,400-square-foot versions in the future, the report said.
Through these large-sized antennas, AST SpaceMobile is eying global coverage with only 90 satellites. Out of these, the company looks forward to launching 60 into orbit by 2026 end.
The Falcon 9 rocket, which took flight for the 373rd time last September, carried Starlink satellites to join over 7,100 others that Musk already has encircling the planet. In a regulatory filing, SpaceX earlier derided AST SpaceMobile satellites as a "meme stock".
Starlink's $12.3 billion in revenue is driven by internet access to the fixed-base stations that remain attached to households and businesses but not smartphones.
Similarly, Jeff Bezos' Project Kuiper does not have its eye set on this. In April, it launched the first set of 27 satellites that are part of the planned 3,200-plus project.
Starlink is currently doing beta testing with T-Mobile. This allows its users to send text using the Starlink network when they don't have a signal on their devices.
Compared to the $350 billion valuation of Starlink, the Texas-based AST SpaceMobile only holds a market cap of $8.7 billion as of now.
A major opportunity for AST SpaceMobile is to provide internet to over 2.6 billion people, majorly in developing nations, rather than providing off-grid connectivity in Europe and North America. This is because not all of them can afford Starlink, Forbes reported.
The basic base station facility of Starlink begins at $350, while people need to pay roughly $80 per month for Wi-Fi at home.
For broadband, Avellan said the "cheapest and most efficient way" is via phone.

Qatar Airways bans some Anker power banks onboard over safety concerns

Doha-based Qatar Airways has banned passengers from carrying or checking in some models of power banks manufactured by Anker. The restricted models are those recently recalled by the Chinese electronics manufacturer due to the risk of overheating, smoke, melting, or fire. The Anker power banks banned by Qatar Airways are: Anker A1647, A1652, A1681, A1689, A1257, Anker PowerCore 10000, which were recalled in June 2025 and A1642, A1647, A1652, which were recalled in October 2024. According to reports, some models of Anker power banks were flagged as a safety risk due to lithium-ion batteries provided by one of its suppliers. In June, Anker had acknowledged the issue, while stating that even as the risk of a malfunction is low, the affected models are being recalled as a precautionary measure. 'We kindly ask all passengers to verify any Anker power banks in their possession prior to travel. If your device is part of the recall, it is prohibited from being brought onboard,' Qatar Airways said in a statement. Earlier, in a related development, another Gulf-based airline, Emirates, had issued rules banning the use of power banks on its flights, effective October 1. As per Emirates's revised policy, passengers are allowed to carry one power bank, provided it is rated below 100 watt-hours. The power bank must have a clearly marked capacity rating and must not be stored in overhead compartments. They must be kept in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of the passenger.

Tesco to open new distribution centre in Karnataka, create 15,000 jobs: Minister

Bengaluru, Aug 13 (PTI) UK-based retail giant Tesco plans to set up a new distribution centre in Karnataka, creating 15,000 additional jobs, Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil said on Wednesday. UK engineering major Rolls-Royce is also exploring fresh investments in the state, he said, adding that the government would expedite all necessary processes to facilitate the company's plans, his office said in a release. Patil made the announcement while addressing a reception hosted on Tuesday by the British Deputy High Commission to mark the signing of the India–United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The pact is projected to boost bilateral trade by about Euro 25 billion annually and help double trade volumes to nearly Euro 90 billion by 2030. 'The FTA would pave the way for duty-free access for 99 per cent of India's exports to the UK and 90 per cent of UK exports to India. This would mean more affordable products, greater market access for businesses, and a surge in commerce benefiting consumers and industries in both countries," he said. Patil noted that leading British firms such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Tesco, ARM, HSBC, and Aviva already have a strong presence in Bengaluru and across Karnataka, collectively employing nearly 30,000 people in the state. He said the FTA would enable UK companies to scale up investments in Karnataka and urged them to leverage the state's technology capabilities, infrastructure, and industry-friendly policies. 'The government will respond proactively to those keen on investing," he assured. According to the minister's office, the event was attended by Harjinder Singh, UK Trade Commissioner; Chandru Iyer, British Deputy High Commissioner; and other dignitaries. Canada's Gildan Activewear to acquire HanesBrands in $4.4 bn deal

Canada's Gildan Activewear Inc has agreed to acquire HanesBrands Inc in a transaction valuing the US-based clothing maker at approximately $2.2 billion in equity and $4.4 billion in enterprise value. Under the deal, HanesBrands shareholders will receive 0.102 Gildan shares and $0.80 in cash per share, representing a 24 per cent premium to HanesBrands' August 11 closing price. Upon completion, they will own about 19.9 per cent of Gildan on a non-diluted basis. Gildan Activewear will acquire HanesBrands in a $4.4 billion deal, doubling Gildan's revenues and expanding into iconic innerwear brands. HanesBrands shareholders will get cash and shares, holding 19.9 per cent post-close. The merger targets $200 million in cost synergies within three years, with over 20 per cent EPS accretion. Headquarters will remain in Montreal. The combination will double Gildan's revenues, expand its reach into iconic innerwear brands, and strengthen its low-cost vertically integrated manufacturing network. The companies expect at least $200 million in annual run-rate cost synergies within three years—$50 million in 2026, $100 million in 2027, and $50 million in 2028. The deal is forecast to be immediately accretive to adjusted diluted EPS and deliver more than 20 per cent EPS accretion once synergies are realised, the two companies said in a joint media release. Gildan will maintain headquarters in Montreal and a strong presence in Winston-Salem. The transaction, approved unanimously by both boards, is subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, with closing expected in late 2025 or early 2026. Financing includes $2.3 billion in committed facilities, with Gildan targeting a net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA ratio of ≤2.0x within 18 months post-close. The merged entity aims for net sales growth of 3–5 per cent annually, capex of 3–4 per cent of sales, and adjusted EPS growth in the low 20 per cent range through 2028. Strategic alternatives will be reviewed for HanesBrands Australia, potentially including a sale, the release added. 'Today is a historic moment in Gildan's journey as we look to join forces with HanesBrands. We are extremely pleased to welcome the HanesBrands' team to the Gildan family,' commented Glenn J Chamandy, president and chief executive officer of Gildan . 'With this transaction, our revenues will double, and we achieve a scale that distinctly sets us apart. The combination with HanesBrands strengthens our positioning with an opportunity to expand the heritage 'Hanes' brand presence in activewear across channels, while enhancing Gildan's retail reach for its portfolio of brands. Further, our state of the art low-cost vertically integrated platform will be utilised to enhance efficiencies and drive additional innovation. We are excited for the next stage of growth and remain focused on supporting our customers and continuing to drive long term shareholder value.' 'This transaction represents a powerful alignment of HanesBrands' and Gildan's shared commitment to quality, innovation, and excellence. We have great respect for Gildan's manufacturing strength and long track record of success. We look forward to expanding upon HanesBrands' portfolio of leading innerwear brands and go-to-market expertise and opening new doors for growth and impact as part of Gildan,' said Steve Bratspies, CEO of HanesBrands . 'This transaction represents a pivotal moment in Gildan's story,' said Michael Kneeland, chair of the board of directors of Gildan . 'Hanes is a distinguished brand with a proud legacy, and by joining forces with HanesBrands, we are forging an exceptional organisation built on the strengths of both companies. Leveraging best practices and the exceptional teams from each side, we are poised to deliver outstanding value to our customers and shareholders. With the finest talent in the industry, we have an extraordinary opportunity ahead to shape the future together.' Bill Simon, chairman of HanesBrands' board of directors , commented, 'We are very pleased to have reached this agreement with Gildan which delivers significant and certain value for our shareholders, both through immediate cash and substantial upside potential of the combined company. As part of Gildan, HanesBrands will benefit from an even stronger financial and operational foundation that will provide new growth opportunities – helping to power further innovation, a broader product offering and greater reach across channels and geographies. We are confident that this transaction and the next chapter with Gildan is the right next step for HanesBrands and will honour and build on its long history for the benefit of all our stakeholders.'
