Kanpur CMO suspended after public spat with DM that exposed UP BJP rift

During his suspension period, Nemi would be attached to the Directorate General and Medical Health Services in Lucknow. According to a government order issued Thursday, Shravasti Additional Chief Medical Officer Uday Nath has been appointed as the new CMO of Kanpur.
After the suspension order, Nemi addressed a press conference here, alleging the DM was 'pressuring' him to carry out 'illegal' work, and went after him since the CMO denied to oblige.
Lucknow: Kanpur Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Hari Dutt Nemi was suspended Thursday after days of public spat with District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, a dispute that threatened to cause divisions with the state BJP with party MLAs taking sides.
The district magistrate and the chief medical officer were locked in a public quarrel for days. At the centre of their fight are corruption allegations against Nemi and the CMO questioning Singh's style of functioning. Singh sought the CMO's removal.
Their fights also brought to the fore the differences within the BJP, with some MLAs siding with the CMO, while others with the DM.
Samajwadi Party claimed that while it may appear to be a case of two officers sparring, it is actually a fight between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Brajesh Pathak who is also state health minister.
A section of BJP legislators from Kanpur, including Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, lobbied in favour of Nemi, urging the government not to remove him. Mahana wrote to Pathak Tuesday, defending the CMO's conduct and urging he be allowed to continue in Kanpur.
Mahana praised Nemi's 'people-friendly' approach and effective implementation of government health schemes.
BJP MLC Arun Pathak and Govindnagar MLA Surendra Maithani wrote separate letters to the deputy chief minister, commending the CMO's 'respectful' behavior towards public representatives.
However, BJP MLA from Bithoor Abhijeet Singh Sanga took a different stand and wrote to Chief Minister Adityanath, rather than Pathak.
In his letter, Sanga accused Nemi of corruption and alleged the CMO was behind the circulation of controversial audio clips that allegedly maligned the district magistrate. He further claimed Nemi misbehaved with staff, disobeyed government orders, and manipulated doctor transfers for personal gain.
Former BJP MLA Neeraj Chaturvedi also waded into the controversy, alleging Tuesday that the assembly speaker, without naming him, is influencing the matter in favour of the CMO.
Chaturvedi sought a thorough investigation into the CMO's working style.

The controversy
The controversy began after DM Singh raised concerns over the functioning of the district's health department last month. In a letter to the state government, he alleged serious irregularities in healthcare services, citing alleged deficiencies found during inspections of Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). He also mentioned alleged arbitrary transfers of doctors under Nemi's tenure.
Singh accused the CMO of negligence and unprofessional conduct, and claimed this has contributed to the deteriorating state of health services in the district.
Tensions escalated after three audio clips, purportedly featuring CMO Nemi making derogatory remarks about the DM, surfaced on social media.
'This is the only DM in 75 districts who is taking credit for everything. If any meeting can happen in 20 minutes, he takes an hour to narrate stories from all around the world and exaggerates things. Now I am seeing women who go for meetings get irritated,' he was heard saying.
Nemi, however, denied it was his voice and claimed it was AI-generated.
The authenticity of these audio clips has not been independently verified by ThePrint.
But after the matter escalated following several complaints from health officials, district magistrate Singh wrote a letter to the principal secretary of health to remove the CMO, saying that several complaints had been received against him for not following government orders, mentally harassing district health officials and seeking bribes for transfer postings.
Also on Saturday, the DM confronted the CMO about the clips during a meeting. Nemi questioned the authenticity of the recordings, claiming they were manipulated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to malign his image.
Not satisfied with the response, the DM asked the CMO to leave the meeting.
Responding to the charges, Nemi reiterated his innocence and alleged a conspiracy to tarnish his image. He said his sole focus was to improve the functioning of the health department.
According to sources in the district administration, the DM had flagged instances of alleged negligence on part of the CMO during multiple surprise inspections over the last few months. He planned to take action after these visits.
The CMO had also been reportedly absent from the office for the past few days. In the meanwhile, a photo of a saffron towel purportedly placed on his chair went viral on social media, garnering a lot of attention.
Samajwadi Party MLA Amitabh Bajpai said, 'The rift between officials and BJP MLAs is common in the state, but I feel that this issue is actually between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. Common people are feeling betrayed by this government as corruption has not stopped.'
Bajpai hinted the DM is considered close to Chief Minister Adityanath and the CMO is in the good books of Deputy Chief Minister Pathak.

Have differences with some in Congress: Tharoor

Congress Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor said on Thursday that he had 'differences of opinion' with some in the party leadership and alleged that he was not invited to campaign for the byelection in Nilambur, but added that the party, its values and workers were very dear to him. Tharoor was speaking to reporters in his constituency of Thiruvananthapuram after returning to the state following engagements in the UK and Delhi. When asked why he was absent from the party's campaign in Nilambur, which went to the polling booth on Thursday, Tharoor replied, 'It is true that I was not invited (to campaign). As you know, I was abroad for around 16 days. Even then, I did not get an invite or even a missed regardless of whether I campaigned or not, I want the Congress to win in Nilambur. We have a good candidate there, and our workers have worked very hard.' The Thiruvananthapuram MP also dwelt briefly on the speculations of friction between him and the Congress leadership in the backdrop of Congress leader Udit Raj's comment that Tharoor had become a 'super spokesperson of the BJP'. 'There are some differences of opinion with the current Congress leadership. It will be good if I speak to them within the party about such issues. Today is not the day for such discussions. There is a by-election happening today. The candidate is my friend and may he win. There will be a good result,' he said. Tharoor, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram, has faced criticism from some Congress leaders for his comments after Operation Sindoor and for accepting the Centre's invite to head one of the multi-party delegations that travelled to international capitals to present India's stance on cross-border terrorism and Pakistan. On Thursday, Tharoor defended himself. The interaction with the PM was solely regarding the delegation visits, the discussions held with leaders of foreign countries etc. It was not a venue to discuss internal politics. I have always held that there is a place for politics and another for national interests. In 2014, when I was the chief of the foreign affairs commission WHAT IS THIS? , I had said then there were only Indian national interests in my mind, not the foreign policy interests of the Congress or the BJP,' he said. 'What I said during Operation Sindoor was my personal opinion. As an Indian, I have that right. If my country needed me and if the government asked me to, I would always be ready,' he added. Nilambur fell vacant after sitting MLA PV Anvar resigned following differences with LDF leadership. The contest is between Congress's Aryadan Shoukath, CPM's M Swaraj and Mohan George of BJP. The seat recorded a provisional turnout of 73.26%. On Thursday, Congress MP from Kasaragod, Rajmohan Unnithan had said that while Tharoor's body remained with the Congress, his loyalty lay with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. State Congress chief Sunny Joseph dismissed Tharoor's statements. 'Usually during by-elections, invites are not sent out to leaders (to come and campaign). During most parts of the campaign, Tharoor was out of the state and the country. If he had come, it would have been good. But we are aware of his style of politics and his busy schedule,' Joseph said. Tharoor's name had figured in the list of star campaigners given by the Congress for the bypoll.

Karnataka Increases Muslim Housing Quota, BJP Calls It "Unconstitutional"

The Karnataka government's decision to increase reservation for minority communities under housing schemes has sparked strong criticism from the BJP. State party president Vijayendra Yediyurappa has called it "unconstitutional" and accused the Congress of indulging in vote-bank politics. In a post on X, Mr Yediyurappa accused the Congress government of turning welfare into vote-bank politics and claimed that the new reservation policy deprives SCs, STs, and OBCs of their rightful opportunities. "Reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional! @INCKarnataka in Karnataka has converted welfare into a marketplace for vote-bank politics. • First, 4% quota in government contracts. • Now, 15% quota in housing schemes. Where does this appeasement end? This is a dangerous attempt to institutionalise communal vote-bank politics. It not only robs SCs, STs, and OBCs of their rightful opportunities, but also sends a disturbing message that merit, backwardness, and constitutional principles are secondary to religious appeasement," he wrote. He asked the Congress to read the Constitution of India, asserting that reservations are intended for those who are socially and educationally backwards, not based on religious identity. "I urge Congress to pick up the Constitution they love to wave at public meetings. Had they read it even once, they would know that reservations are based on social and educational backwardness, and not handed out based on "who votes for me." Under the guise of welfare, this government is brazenly pushing religion-based reservation, striking at the very foundation of Dr. BR Ambedkar's Constitution and dragging his vision through the dirt of appeasement politics," he added. "The Congress government's reckless appeasement will not survive judicial scrutiny, nor escape the judgment of history. Karnataka deserves governance, not divisive experiments with the Constitution," the BJP leader said. Speaking to ANI, Mr Joshi said, "This is against the Constitution. The Supreme Court has also rejected a religion-based reservation. This reduces the quota for OBC, ST, and poor people from the general caste. The Karnataka government is doing the politics of appeasement. I condemn this. We will also approach the court against this." On Thursday, the Karnataka Cabinet approved an increase in the reservation quota for minority communities under various housing schemes from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. Karnataka Minister HK Patil stated that this move does not require any new rules to be drafted. "The reservation for all minority communities will be increased. There are Christians, Jains, Buddhists," the Minister said.

Maharashtra News: Uddhav's ‘Prahaar' jibe vs Shinde's Hindutva retort mark Shiv Sena Foundation Day

Maharashtra News: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on June 19 accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of trying to scuttle the possibility of his party's alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray. In response, Maharashtra's Deputy CM Eknath Shinde slammed him for 'abandoning' Hindutva. Using a dialogue from the 1991 Nana Patekar-starrer Hindi movie Prahaar, Uddhav also challenged the 'gaddars' (traitors), the term he often uses for the Shinde-led group that 'ditched' him three years ago and joined the BJP-led government in the state. Both Thackeray and Shinde addressed rallies of their parties in Mumbai to celebrate the 59th foundation day of Shiv Sena, founded by Uddhav's father Bal Thackeray in 1966. While the Shinde-led Shiv Sena held its event at the NSCI Dome in Worli, the Sena (UBT) rally was at Shanmukhand Hall in the Sion area. In order to scuttle the possibility of an alliance of "Marathi parties", meetings are being held in hotels and elsewhere, Uddhav Thackeray said, apparently referring to Raj Thackeray's recent meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a five-star hotel in the city. "What people want will happen. We will see how it is to be done. The BJP and Shinde Sena do not want Marathi parties to unite. If you try to finish the Thackeray brand, we will finish off the BJP,' the former Chief Minister said. Recalling the famous dialogue from Prahaar, Thackeray said, 'Like Nana Patekar in the film, I am standing before these traitors and telling them, Come on, kill me.' In Prahaar, Patekar's character, Major Chavhan, confronts goons harassing a woman, and shouts, "Come on, kill me!" as he fights them off. 'But if you dare attack me, come along with an ambulance like in the film starring Amitabh Bachchan, because you will meet the same fate,' Thackeray said, without naming the movie Trishul, where Amitabh confronts the bad guys with an accompanying ambulance. At the Worli rally, Shinde countered, saying, 'Mere talk is not enough. You need strength in your wrists.' Uddhav said the imposition of Hindi in the state will not be allowed at any cost. 'The BJP wants to create a divide among Marathi and Hindi-speakers on the eve of civic polls,' he said, exuding confidence that his party will retain the Mumbai civic body. He said the BJP has no legacy of its own and had to install a massive statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who banned the RSS when he was the country's home minister. Referring to the BJP-led Mahayuti's manifesto, speaking of giving ₹ 2,100 per month to women under the Laadki Bahin scheme and loan waiver to farmers, he said the BJP did not fulfil these promises after the assembly elections. 'They (BJP) promised me that the Shiv Sena would have the chief minister's post for two and a half years, but didn't keep the promise," said Uddhav Thackeray, who parted ways with the BJP over the CM post after the 2019 assembly elections. When the opposition contested the Lok Sabha polls by forming the INDIA group, PM Narendra Modi compared the opposition bloc to the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen, Thackeray claimed, adding that after Operation Sindoor, Modi sent MPs of the same opposition bloc all over the world to present India's stand. The BJP maligns opposition leaders with corruption charges, and then inducts them into the party, Thackeray said. Responding to Thackeray's accusations, Shinde claimed he was desperate for power and was therefore seeking an alliance with the MNS. Shinde said his party functioned as per Bal Thackeray's ideology. Shiv Sena (UBT) did not get even one-third of the votes polled by his Shiv Sena in the 2024 Maharashtra assembly polls, Shinde said. 'Whatever votes they got was because of the Congress as the real Shiv Sena voters have bid them goodbye,'' he said. 'Balasaheb Thackeray opposed Congress, but those desperate for power aligned with that party as they are desperate for power. UBT has betrayed the Marathi people, Shiv Sena voters and have abandoned Hindutva,' he said. Shinde said he has never seen a betrayer like Uddhav Thackeray 'who changes colours like a chameleon'. He said he will never compromise on Hindutva for power. 'Why do you hesitate to call Balasaheb as Hindu Hriday Samrat? You join hands with those who abuse Modi and (Amit) Shah who fulfilled Balasaheb's dream of Ram temple and abolishing Article 370. Why do you sit with those who abuse Savarkar and Hindu religion,' Shinde said. 'Are you Indian or are you a Pakistani agent? Pakistan uses your statements against India,' Shinde said, naming Uddhav Thackeray. Like Nana Patekar in the film, I am standing before these traitors and telling them, Come on, kill me. Shinde also mocked Shiv Sena (UBT) for celebrating the party's foundation day, claiming that the Thackeray-led group came into existence only three years ago. How can a group formed on October 10, 2022, celebrate the Shiv Sena's 59th foundation day, he added.
