Who are the candidates for NFLPA interim executive director? No one knows
At this point, no one knows who the more immediate hire will be. Or when it will happen.
The internal document obtained by ESPN that became the centerpiece of a report regarding potential criminal investigation mentions five potential, but not actual, candidates.
Three currently work for the NFLPA: senior director of player affairs Lester Archambeau, chief player officers Don Davis, and chief operating officer Teri Smith. The other two are former NFLPA presidents — Domonique Foxworth and Eric Winston.
ESPN also reports that former executive director DeMaurice Smith could be a candidate to return and to get things under contract. Per the same report, however, Smith isn't interested.
It's still not known who's interested in the job and, more importantly, the persons in whom the NFLPA is interested. Who's currently running things? Who's making decisions? Who's vetting candidates for the interim job? Who will be negotiating with them?
The messier the situation becomes, the more expensive it could become to find someone competent to fix it.
We still think they should contact former (as of Friday) Packers CEO Mark Murphy. He has run a multi-billion-dollar football operation for 17 years, he played in the NFL, he served as a player rep, and he was employed by the NFLPA after he retired from the NFL, both as an assistant executive director and as a vice president. He also helped negotiate the 2011 CBA on behalf of the NFL.
He'd be the perfect candidate to restore order to the union — and to strike fear in the hearts of his recently former business partners.

On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars on the strength of their passing offense. We have gone over the game and after breaking down the obvious like the quarterbacks, we have 10 notes on 10 Steelers who stood out for us and not always for good reasons. 1 - RB Kaleb Johnson Johnson's yards before contact were negative thanks to how awful the Steelers offensive line did run blocking so we give Johnson a pass this week. 2 - WR Max Hurleman At this point, we are crunching the numbers, trying to figure out how to get Hurleman on the 53-man roster. 3 - WR Roc Taylor Like Hurleman, Roc Taylor made a strong statement on Saturday and is really going to push guys like Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek for the last spot on the depth chart. 4 - OT Troy Fautanu The run blocking by the Steelers offensive line was down overall but that's not on Troy Fautanu. Not only did he not give up a pressure on 24 passing snaps, he was the only offensive lineman consistently doing his job on run plays. 5 - DT Yahya Black Black only played 10 snaps but it was enough for us to be convinced he needs a heavier workload next week. Black's lateral agility for a man his size is remarkable. 6 - EDGE Jack Sawyer We aren't going to overreact but this wasn't a great debut for Sawyer as a pass rusher. We are hopeful he will play with more confidence next week. 7 - EDGE DeMarvin Leal Time is running out for Leal to show he can be a 275-pound edge rusher. He was a tweener coming out of college and he's still a tweener. 8 - S Juan Thornhill Thornhill came out and decided to be the tone setter and you can see he's embraced his role as the new starting free safety. 9 - S Chuck Clark The Steelers gave Clark plenty of opportunity to make a statement on Saturday, but he's still a work in progress to get on the right page with this defense. 10 - LB Payton Wilson Wilson only played 12 snaps on Saturday but still found his way to four tackles. The Rockets acquired Kevin Durant earlier this season via a trade that sent Jalen Green to the Suns. Following the trade, several sources speculated that Kevin Durant will look to extend his contract and plans to retire in Houston. However, some sources believe there may be a few hiccups in Durant's contract extension talks. According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN, the Rockets are not likely to offer Durant a max extension this summer and haven't gone all in on him at the moment. He appeared on the latest episode of the Hoops Collective podcast and gave his opinion on the Rockets' future. 'The Rockets to me.. they've created a fascinating situation. But I agree, I think they're as well-positioned to have a long run as any franchise other than Oklahoma City. Despite the fact that they just went all in, they didn't go all in, they just made a trade to get Kevin Durant, who is going into year 18.' 'They did not go all in on the trade. They made a trade at a price that they were okay with, that did not sacrifice the long term. You know, Jalen Green was a second-round pick who didn't really pan out. Um, you know, we talked when they made the trade, if you're ranking the young players on the roster by future value, by long-term value, he might have been fifth or sixth on that list.' 'And then, you know, that they didn't really have like an immediate spot for the 10th overall pick in this year's draft. Hell, they couldn't squeeze the third overall pick in last year's draft into the rotation.' 'The Rockets aren't going to go all in. By all appearances and by what I've heard, they're not going all in on an extension for Kevin Durant. Now, doesn't mean it won't happen, but you know, there've been rumblings of, hey, KD doesn't, you know, he's not going to push for the full max.' 'Ummm, I don't know that the Rockets are going to put anything on the table that's close to the max. I think the Rockets are like it's not ideal, but I don't think they would panic if they go into the season with Kevin Durant just on the contract that he's on, just on the expiring deal.' MacMahon has some solid sources in the front office of the Rockets; therefore, the information he has given on Durant is almost as good as confirmed. It will be interesting to see what Durant feels about this. He could pull a Kawhi Leonard-type move like he did with the Raptors, where Leonard joined them for one season (2019) on an expiring contract, won them the championship with their young core, and left the next season for the Clippers. Depending on what Durant and his representatives feel about this, Durant could take a call on his future. If he fails to win a championship, he may not see an offer from the Rockets that he would like. And if he does, he could still leave like Leonard did. Or he could even earn that max contract and retire in Houston eventually. The Rockets also have a young core that is getting set for their extensions, like Tari Eason in 2025-26 and Amen Thompson the following year. Therefore, the Rockets need to decide between investing in an aging Kevin Durant for the long term or saving the salary cap space to pay the young stars what they deserve. The Rockets are certainly an exciting team to watch in the 2025-26 season. The second overall pick of this year's NFL Draft admitted he "was a little nervous at first" as he started one of the most high-profile debut seasons in the league. Hunter had two catches for nine yards in his 10 plays as a receiver before switching and playing eight snaps on defence. Although not technically a rookie, JJ McCarthy will play his first season with the Minnesota Vikings after a knee injury cost him the entire campaign last year. McCarthy had a tear in his eye before his first game in 364 days, where he led one solid 13-play drive in what could be his only action before the NFL season opener. A comedy of errors for the Cowboys A messy first Dallas Cowboys game for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer culminated with even Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb getting a flag - despite not even being on the field. Lamb was on the sidelines for the defeat against the Los Angeles Rams but strayed almost onto the field and was hit by an official racing down the touchline. That led to Lamb not only taking a big hit but also Dallas getting one of 11 flags in the game, which cost them 83 yards and angered the new man in charge. "I hope the guy's OK. But we have to be better than that," Schottenheimer said. "CeeDee knows better. We know better." Dallas, who have star defender Micah Parsons watching on despite requesting a trade away from the team, will hope that comedy of errors is not a sign of things to come this season.
