Appointment of IAS officers from general category sparks Raj row
However, controversy erupted after it was pointed out that all the newly-promoted officers belong to the general category, with no representation from SC, ST, OBC, MBC, or minority communities.
LoP Tikaram Jully and Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, accusing it of sidelining social justice and ignoring eligible candidates from reserved categories.
Jully called into question the intent of the BJP government: 'Why did the Rajasthan government not include any officer from Dalit, backward, tribal, or minority communities in this selection?'
Meanwhile, Dotasra termed the development as 'a clear display of casteist mentality'.

Capt. Chowta urges Karnataka government not to impose unreasonable restrictions on Hindu festivities
Capt. Brijesh Chowta, Dakshina Kannada MP, on Wednesday urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to hurt sentiments of Hindus by imposing unreasonable restrictions on festivities through the police. In a statement from New Delhi, Capt. Chowta alleged that the state government was using the police to hurt HIndu sentiments. Referring to recent guidelines by the Mangaluru city and the Dakshina Kannada district police which, among other things, restricted the use of DJ system, holding festivities beyond 10 p.m. etc., the MP said several socio-cultural-religious programmes take place throughout the year in Tulunadu. However, the Mangaluru police booking a case against the organisers and seizing the sound system at a Mosaru Kudike celebration in Kavoor, was deplorable, the MP said. When people were celebrating festivals with great fervour, the police interruptions were not good. During the erstwhile BJP rule too, there were restrictions on the use of loudspeakers; yet the police did not interfere in the celebrations, he noted. Now it appears that the government has given specific instructions to the police to disturb Hindu festivities, he alleged. Owners of sound systems were contemplating not to use loudspeakers in any public function after the police booked one of them in Kavoor. The restrictions would adversely affect people engaged in the business. Capt. Chowta noted that elected representatives of the region had raised the issue before Home Minister G. Parameshwara during his recent visit to Mangaluru. However, the Minister did not resolve the issue then. If the government continues to meddle with Hindu sentiments, it would be held responsible for any consequences, the MP cautioned. The Kavoor police on August 16 booked the organisers and sound system owners at the Mosaru Kudike celebrations at Panjimogaru for using DJ system and obstructing traffic movement on a public road.

130th Amendment Bill turns India into dictatorship: Stalin
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin described the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill moved by Union home minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as "a black bill". Stalin's post on X came in the wake of protests by opposition MPs, who tore up copies of the bill in the Lok Sabha that sought to remove Central and state ministers arrested or detained in custody for at least 30 days over serious criminal charges. "The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform. This is a black day and this is a black bill," Stalin said on X. "A 30-day arrest is equal to removal of an elected CM. No trial and no conviction. It's just BJP's diktat," he added. Stalin said, "The Bill strikes at the very root of democracy, and I call upon all the democratic forces to unite against this attempt to turn India into a dictatorship. BJP govt has decided to defile the Constitution and its democratic foundations by turning India into a dictatorship under the Prime Minister." He called it a sinister attempt to intimidate regional parties in NDA, adding that "the first move of any emerging dictator is to give himself the power to arrest and remove rivals from office. That is exactly what this Bill seeks to do." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). After 13 yrs, Kamat back ingovt, this time as a BJP min
Panaji: More than three decades after he first entered the Goa legislative assembly on a BJP ticket in 1994, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat will be sworn in as a BJP minister for the first time on Thursday. Assembly speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, who will resign from his post on Thursday, will get a second stint in the BJP govt as he will also be inducted into chief minister Pramod Sawant 's cabinet. This is the second reshuffle of the Sawant govt and comes around a year and a half before the 2027 assembly election. Both Kamat and Tawadkar will be sworn in at noon on Thursday. It is a remarkable full circle for Kamat, the career politician, who has been a mainstay of contemporary Goan politics — chief minister of a Congress govt for a full term, leader of opposition, and undefeated MLA of Margao for over 30 years even as a generation of MLAs and ministers came and went. 'I thank god for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of the state,' Kamat told TOI , while also thanking PM Modi, home minister Amit Shah, CM Sawant and other senior central and state BJP functionaries for 'making this happen'. Kamat will replace law and environment minister Aleixo Sequeira who resigned from the cabinet on Wednesday, after serving as a minister for 22 months. Tawadkar will take the place of former art and culture and sports minister Govind Gaude who was dropped on June 18 from the cabinet for making serious allegations of corruption in the tribal welfare department, which comes under the chief minister. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Pain Keeping You Up at Night? In Nov 2023, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral resigned from the cabinet to pave the way for Sequeira's induction into the cabinet. Sequeira, in his resignation letter, said, 'I am compelled to take this decision due to personal reasons', clarifying that he hadn't resigned on health grounds. Sequeira had undergone medical treatment in Delhi recently and was back in Goa for the monsoon session of the assembly. 'There was no pressure on me to tender my resignation,' he said. 'I will continue to be a member of BJP and there is no issue with the party. I have no complaints against Sawant. He gave me a lot of freedom.' Sawant later said that he accepted Sequeira's resignation. In 1994, Kamat was one of the four MLAs who was first elected on a BJP ticket to the assembly and continued to serve as the party's legislature party member till 2005, before he switched sides by pulling down Manohar Parrikar's govt to pave the way for Congress to form a govt. Known as the second-in-command after Parrikar in BJP, he became a first-time minister in former chief minister Francisco Sardinha's coalition govt, which was supported by BJP. Subsequently, Kamat was number two in Parrikar's govt till he quit BJP in 2005. Kamat became the chief minister for the first time in 2007 and completed his term in office. Tawadkar, who was also a minister in Parrikar's cabinet in 2012, had been denied a ticket by the party in 2017 assembly elections. He later contested the assembly election as an independent and lost. In 2019, Tawadkar returned to BJP and was elected in the 2022 assembly election. Since then, he has been the speaker. 'I have increased the sanctity of the speaker's post and I am happy about it. I wanted to continue as a speaker. Sometimes the party wants our service for party work, and I am a soldier of the party. I am not bigger than the party. I have accepted the responsibility given by the party, so that my organisational skills can be used for party activities,' he said. Tawadkar was first elected in the 2005 by-election from Poinguinim. He was re-elected in 2007. After delimitation in 2012, he was elected from the Canacona constituency. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
