Red Wings Visit Panthers with Playoff Hopes on Life Support
According to MoneyPuck.com, the Detroit Red Wings' playoff chances have dwindled to just 0.5%, following Tuesday's 4–1 loss in Montreal, yet the season continues and the schedule remains merciless. On Thursday night, the Red Wings pay a visit to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, looking to win a battle in a war they may have already lost.

Even at just four days remove, it will be a much different Panthers team to the one Detroit edged out 2–1 on Sunday. Defenseman Gustav Forsling and forwards Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart (all of them rested for that game) returned to the Florida lineup in Tuesday's win over the Maple Leafs. Forward Nico Sturm (acquired from San Jose at the trade deadline) is also expected to rejoin the lineup. Even with that slew of returns, the Panthers will still be without a handful of key contributors: Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, and Dmitry Kulikov, while Carter Verhaeghe is expected to be given the night off.

Florida's playoff spot is assured, but the Cats will be looking to ward off a late surge from the Ottawa Senators to hold onto their present spot as the third seed out of the Atlantic Division, rather than slipping into a wild card position.
For Detroit, the evening is a matter of winning and hoping for the miracle requisite to spring it back to serious playoff contention. The Red Wings will be returning to Cam Talbot in net for that operation, while they may be forced into a lineup change should Elmer Soderblom (who did not take morning skate) prove unable to go, in which case Austin Watson would fold into the lineup.

Just like the Peterborough Petes and Kingston Frontenacs had to do with their 2025 first-rounders, the crueling long wait is over for the Sarnia Sting. Their fourth-overall selection has officially signed and is ready to throw his body through whatever gets in his way at the OHL level. On Thursday, Sarnia announced the signing of forward Brenner Lammens, a player who has a lot of similarities to the organization's fifth overall pick in 2022, Porter Martone. Lammens, 15, played in the GTHL for the Toronto Red Wings U16 AAA team last season. He was the captain for his squad, which really isn't a surprise when you watch him play. He's a physical presence and plays that new-age power forward style, blending physicality and skill together to take over games. Additionally, he's still so young, not turning 16 until Sept. 13. 'This is a really exciting day for Brenner, his family, and our organization,' said Sarnia Sting GM Dylan Seca. 'We drafted him fourth overall because we love the mix his game provides. He's a character player who plays in your face, can shoot the puck, has great instincts around the net, and competes in the hard areas. Those intangibles are tough to find, and we believe they'll help us build a championship team.' 2025 First Overall Pick Kaden McGregor Finally Signs With Peterborough Better late than never. The Peterborough Petes have finally put pen to paper with the 2025 first overall pick. In the regular season, he recorded 36 points (17 goals, 19 assists) in 26 games, along with 59 penalty minutes. That snarl and edge he enjoys playing with can also be seen through his 132 penalty minutes in 34 games with the Red Wings during his U15 season. During the 2024-25 season in the Ontario U16 circuit, the Red Wings were a team that, if they caught you sleeping for one game, they were going to make you pay. They pulled off a reverse sweep against the powerhouse Toronto Jr. Canadiens in the playoffs, a squad that was led by North Bay's Camryn Warren, and saw three other members go in the first round: Noah Laus, Keaton Ardagh, and Sam Roberts. The Red Wings also went to the Championship game at the Whitby Silver Stick, and were the surprising team of the tournament. All of this success in big moments is because of Lammens. So did Kingston with their ninth-overall pick, Aleks Kulemin. How come? McGregor, Kulemin, and Lammens are all represented by the Newport Sports Management group. Newport was unhappy about the changes the OHL made to its standard player contracts. The agents wanted a better understanding of the makeup of the new standard player agreements before they had their players sign on the dotted line. Rochester Americans Sign Former Michigan State Captain Red Savage
The Rochester Americans announced they have signed former Michigan State Spartans forward Red Savage to a two-year AHL contract. Savage recorded five goals and 11 points in 20 games while serving as captain with Michigan State last season before suffering a season ending injury. The 22-year-old spent two seasons at Miami University Ohio before transferring to Michigan State. The Scottsdale, AZ., native racked up 28 goals and 68 points in 125 career NCAA games split between the RedHawks and Spartans. Originally a fourth round selection of the Detroit Red Wings in 2021, Savage's rights expired on Aug. 15. Red is the son of AHL and NHL alumnus Brian Savage. 6-foot-9, 24-year NHL veteran completes sub-five-hour ironman originally appeared on The Sporting News An Ironman triathlon might just be one of the most impressive feats a human can say they've done. Many do it to prove to themselves they're capable of doing what's viewed as impossible to some. One former NHL player's hobby recently seems to be completing Ironmans. What former NHL player ran a sub-five-hour Ironman? An Ironman is basically a triathlon (Swimming, biking and running) but with extreme volume that forces humans to endure pain like they've never felt before. The distances can vary. Former NHL player Zdeno Chara just completed a sub-five-hour Ironman that consisted of 1.2 miles of swimming, 56 miles of biking and 13.1 miles of running. He finished with a time of 4:56:47. For a player who played 24 long seasons in the NHL, consisting of 1,680 games, you'd think he'd want to enjoy retirement once he called it a career. Chara has done the opposite. Chara stated in the past, 'My athletic journey post-hockey naturally gravitated toward endurance sports' (Runner's World). At age 48, Chara is getting every bit out of his body that he has left, and is doing it with a smile on his face, even after logging 39,485 minutes on the ice in his career. He stands at an increible height of 6-9 for an NHL player, tied with Rangers' Matt Rempe for the tallest player to ever play in the NHL. Chara was a seven-time all-star, a Stanley Cup Champion and most importantly, a Hall of Famer. He recorded 680 points in his career, with 209 goals and 471 assists. No signs are pointing towards Chara ending his post-NHL racing hobby just yet, so we should expect to see more impressive endurance feats from Chara in the next couple of years.
