Red Wings Visit Panthers with Playoff Hopes on Life Support

Apr 6, 2025; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot (39) watches a fight against the Florida Panthers during the third period at Little Caesars Arena. (Tim Fuller, Imagn Images) According to the Detroit Red Wings' playoff chances have dwindled to just 0.5%, following Tuesday's 4–1 loss in Montreal, yet the season continues and the schedule remains merciless. On Thursday night, the Red Wings pay a visit to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, looking to win a battle in a war they may have already lost. Even at just four days remove, it will be a much different Panthers team to the one Detroit edged out 2–1 on Sunday. Defenseman Gustav Forsling and forwards Aleksander Barkov and Sam Reinhart (all of them rested for that game) returned to the Florida lineup in Tuesday's win over the Maple Leafs. Forward Nico Sturm (acquired from San Jose at the trade deadline) is also expected to rejoin the lineup. Even with that slew of returns, the Panthers will still be without a handful of key contributors: Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, and Dmitry Kulikov, while Carter Verhaeghe is expected to be given the night off. For Detroit, the evening is a matter of winning and hoping for the miracle requisite to spring it back to serious playoff contention. The Red Wings will be returning to Cam Talbot in net for that operation, while they may be forced into a lineup change should Elmer Soderblom (who did not take morning skate) prove unable to go, in which case Austin Watson would fold into the lineup. "Sometimes It's Easier to Be the Hunter than the Hunted": Detroit Looks to Keep Hunting vs. Panthers

"Sometimes It's Easier to Be the Hunter than the Hunted": Detroit Looks to Keep Hunting vs. Panthers Jan 16, 2025; Sunrise, Florida, USA; Detroit Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot (39) makes a save after a deflection from Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov (16) during the second period at Amerant Bank Arena. (Sam Navarro, Imagn Images) DETROIT—Sunday night at Little Caesars Arena, the Detroit Red Wings host the Florida Panthers, looking to build on the success of Friday night's win over Carolina and keep pace in the desperate chase for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens beat the Philadelphia Flyers last night in Montreal, setting the current playoff cutline at 83 points with 76 games played. The Red Wings have played 75 and earned 77 points. Two points Sunday evening would do wonders for Detroit's playoff chances, heading into Tuesday night's matchup in Montreal. "You play all year to get near the finish line, and when you're close, you're really excited about hunting somebody down," said coach Todd McLellan after Saturday afternoon's practice. "Sometimes it's easier to be the hunter than the hunted. We'd like to change that though, as years go on, but right now we're the hunter, and "Three weeks ago, we talked about running a marathon, and we're nearing the finish line, and we don't have to catch the individual that's going to end up first," he continued, mixing metaphors. "We just have to catch the runner in front of us." Trending Red Wings Stories Red Wings Keep Dream Alive with Emphatic 5–3 Win over Carolina Advertisement Red Wings Austin Watson Mercifully Sent Down Every Expiring Detroit Red Wings Contract Red Wings Trade For Mrazek Doesn't Add Up Now In beating the Hurricanes Friday, the Red Wings took advantage of a Carolina lineup without two key contributors: Andrei Svechnikov and Jordan Staal. The Panthers arrive in Detroit as the defending Stanley Cup champions, but they two are without two central figures from that Cup-winning team with both Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov unavailable due to injury. Florida also skates into the evening's game as the second half of a back-to-back, having lost 3–0 Saturday night in Ottawa. Advertisement Teams like the Hurricanes and Panthers—already secure in their playoff berths—aren't living in the same world as the desperate Red Wings. As McLellan pointed out Saturday, "Take the team we played last night. If they were in our situation and they were desperate, I don't know if Staal or Svechnikov would've played or not. I don't know their teams, but the ones that are in, that have the little x by their name, they have the luxury of deciding how to manage their lineup, so they're getting ready. We don't have that luxury. You're banged up, you're hurt, you're sore, you play. That's just the way it is, and there's nothing wrong with that, because if you can get in, you're already playing that type of hockey going into game one." Against Florida, McLellan will be asking Cam Talbot to make his fifth straight start. As to Talbot's workload down the stretch, the coach said, "It'll be awfully hard for one goaltender to play all that way, but we're only worrying about tomorrow." Talbot himself pointed out that Carolina and Florida share more than just playoff safety, they also share some traits when it comes to their style of creating offense. "They throw a lot of pucks on net, they've got good net-front presence, they've got a lot of shooters in the lineup, and they get a lot of pucks to the net from the point, so we're gonna have to do a good job like we did last night boxing out, let me have sight lines, and obviously coming up with some big blocks when we need to," Talbot said of the Panthers. Detroit will look keep hunting Sunday night at 5:30 in a nationally televised game on TNT. Never miss a story by adding us to your Google News favorites.

4 Red Wings Who Could Be Traded To New Teams

Everything has a price. When it comes to hockey, you need to give to get. The "future considerations" loophole aside, if you want to acquire talent, you must draft, trade, or sign a free agent. With the trade deadline approaching, it's time to look at who could leave the Detroit Red Wings locker room. This is a list of players who are either rumored to be on the trade block or have expiring deals, making them appealing to teams making a Stanley Cup run. Here are four Red Wings players who could find themselves with a new team by the end of this year's trade deadline. A few things in life are guaranteed: death, taxes, and Vladimir Tarasenko popping up in trade rumors every season. All jokes aside, Elliotte Friedman has mentioned in the last 10 days that the Red Wings are potentially looking to move on from the veteran Russian forward. But how likely is it that the team moves on from him? His price tag isn't the greatest, but with the salary cap shooting up over the next three seasons, it wouldn't be difficult for another team to acquire him. The question lies with the acquiring team: why would they want him? The Florida Panthers feels like a fit, while others have hinted at the Toronto Maple Leafs. I also wouldn't count out the possibility of the Vegas Golden Knights making a play. Either way, I wouldn't count on Tarasenko playing out the rest of his contract in Detroit. The Red Wings crease is crowded like a $2 all-you-can-eat-sushi-buffet. Currently, the Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon duo are getting the job done for the Red Wings. With that being said, something has got to give. In the minors, they have prized prospect Sebastian Cossa, reclamation project Jack Campbell, and Ville Husso. Cossa has become the de facto starter, and Husso has accumulated the second-most starts among the netminders. However, Cossa's dominance and Campbell's serviceability make Husso more than expendable. Detroit Red Wings Prospect Breaks Through Kane Opens Up on Watching 4 Nations: "You Definitely Want to Be There and You Feel Like You're Missing out on Some Great Hockey" Red Wings Star Envy Of The League Peter Forsberg with High Praise for Red Wings' RaymondAlex Lyon has a very appealing contract. The netminder is in the final year of a deal costing the Red Wings $900,000. His price tag and good performance will make him appealing to contenders looking to fortify their goalie position down the stretch. Because of that, the Red Wings could get a pretty penny for him. However, he is younger than Cam Talbot, so the Red Wings could pull a switcheroo and try to trade him instead. With his past relationship to Todd McLellan and performance this season, it's tough to see them going this route. Relaxed & recharged — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) February 19, 2025 Patrick Kane has been revived since the coaching change. The veteran winger didn't need new linemates, just a new boss calling the shots. That being said, he's on an expiring contract and performing well. If the return makes sense for the Red Wings, he could be traded to a contending team. He's already received one of four bonuses tied to his contract. His $1.5 million bonus was paid out after he played 10 games. He has another $1 million in bonuses remaining, two of which are tied to the playoffs. While Kane may stay with the Red Wings, his leaving to win a cup somewhere else should not be ruled out. Ultimately, only time will tell. But Red Wings fans should keep their eyes on these four players, as it's almost guaranteed that they won't all return next season. He has won back-to-back starts, while allowing exactly 2 goals in each of the past 3 outings. He came on in relief in the third period of the Jan. 18 loss in Tampa, stopping all 6 shots he faced. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Lightning at Red Wings picks and predictions Prediction Red Wings 3, Lightning 2 The RED WINGS (+120) are worth a look as short 'dogs, as they're on fire lately with 7 consecutive wins. They've also dominated the series against the Lightning (-145) in the first 2 matchups, and in the recent meetings in the series. Under new coach Todd McLellan, the Red Wings are 15-4-1 in 20 games since taking over for the fired Derek Lalonde as bench boss. The Red Wings +1.5 (-210) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, and that's way too much risk for not nearly enough reward. Even if you were to toss the Red Wings into a multi-leg parlay, it's not a recommended play. Just look to the moneyline instead. PASS. UNDER 6 (-105) is the lean. The Under is on a 6-2-1 run for the Red Wings, including the most recent meeting Jan. 25 against the Lightning. The Under is 1-0-1 in 2 meetings with the Lightning since Jan. 18, too. The Under also has a slight 5-3 edge in the past 8 games for the Lightning, with the goaltenders allowing 3 or fewer goals in 4 in a row, and 7 of the past 8 meetings.
