Qantas' direct route between Joburg and Perth to launch in December

Last year The South African reported that Qantas was set to begin direct flights between Joburg and Western Australia's capital by mid-2025.
The airline has confirmed that flights on this route will begin on 7 December 2025. Bookings are now open.
'The opportunity now exists to take more South Africans to Australia, with a direct flight proposition, as well as bring Australians to South Africa,' said Michi Messner, Qantas Regional Manager for Africa.
'It does support the demand on the route given the fact that Australia has so many South African expats in the region (around 200 000) and it opens up more opportunities for visiting friends and family, plus for corporate and leisure travel.'
The Perth–Johannesburg flight enables further access to Cape Town through Airlink.
Qantas has flown between South Africa and Australia since 1952 and currently operates a long-haul route from Johannesburg to Sydney.
Until now, only South African Airways has offered direct flights between Johannesburg and Perth.
Flight QF65 will depart Perth on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 13h30, and arrive in Johannesburg at 18h45 the same day (adjusting for time difference).
On the same days, flight QF66 will leave Johannesburg at 21h35, and arrive in Perth at 13h30 the following day.
For South Africans travelling to New Zealand, Qantas will also launch new direct flights between Perth and Auckland from 8 December.
These flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays and are designed to streamline travel for passengers coming from Joburg.
With both the Johannesburg and Auckland flights operating out of Perth's Terminals 3 and 4, travellers can make smooth connections without needing an Australian transit visa (as long as their layover is under eight hours).
Both the Johannesburg and Auckland routes will be operated using Airbus A330 aircraft, featuring 27 business-class seats and 224 economy-class seats.

Major SA restaurant group opens up even MORE outlets

South Africa's restaurant industry is experiencing unexpected growth, with one of the country's largest restaurant groups adding dozens of new outlets both locally and internationally. By June 2025, the group had expanded its footprint to 724 restaurants across 14 countries, up from 701 the previous year. That includes 31 new restaurants in South Africa (with 15 closures) and 15 new international outlets (with eight closures). As reported by BusinessTech , the company behind Spur, Panarottis, John Dory's, RocoMamas and other brands, the Spur Corporation, reported an 8.3% rise in restaurant sales, supported by refreshed store designs, AI-driven customer marketing, and strong franchisee performance. Looking ahead, the group plans to open 42 new outlets locally and 14 overseas in the coming financial year. Here's a look at how the company expanded over the past year: Brand 30 June 2025 in SA 30 June 2025 Internationally 30 June 2025 Total 30 June 2024 in SA 30 June 2024 Internationally 30 June 2024 Total Spur 316 31 347 307 30 337 Panarottis 92 47 139 88 40 128 John Dory's 44 2 46 46 1 47 RocoMamas 88 24 112 85 26 111 Speciality brands 79 1 80 77 1 78 Total group 619 105 724 603 98 701 As a new door opens, another one closes, it seems, as Spur's second-oldest branch recently shut its doors in Cape Town. The restaurant, which held a special place in Cape Town's dining scene as the second-ever Spur branch to open, announced its temporary closure via Facebook this week, describing the decision as bittersweet but not final. 'We're closing our doors here, but this isn't goodbye,' Spur's statement read. 'We're searching for a new home for Seven Spur – one that will capture the same spirit, flavour, and family feeling that made this spot so special.' it added. Ithuba denies Lottery winner conspiracies, highlights fair play and big wins

Ithuba has dismissed false claims about lottery winner patterns, confirming that big wins happen across SA through both retail and digital platforms. The National Lottery Ithuba said they were aware of "misleading and factually incorrect information currently circulating on social media regarding the legitimacy of winners. "We wish to assure all South Africans that the National Lottery operates under the highest levels of fairness, transparency, and accountability," Ithuba said in a statement this week. "Every draw is conducted using certified systems, under strict oversight from independent auditors, and safeguarded through rigorous security protocols and surveillance." They said winners are "determined purely by chance," adding that no one, including Ithub, can predict or influence the outcome. In addition, all winner records are kept for necessary auditing purposes. "It has been suggested that all big winners since 2020 have come only from Absa or FNB, and that Ithuba issued a statement that all 2022 Division 1 winners were from these banks. "This is simply not true. Winners come from across the country, via both retail outlets and digital platforms."
