Gangaikonda Cholapuram committee hails announcement of grand statues for Chola emperors
The Prime Minister's promise of constructing new and grand statues of Chola emperors has been welcomed and deeply appreciated by Gangaikonda Cholapuram Development Committee.
Gomagan, the president of Gangaikonda Cholapuram development committee expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and said that this is a joyous moment for all of us.
'The visit of PM Modi to Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a joyous event for all of us. Since 2014, we have been celebrating the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival on behalf of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram development committee. In this context, we express our gratitude to Chief Minister Stalin for recognizing the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival as a state festival from the year 2022,' he said.
He further said: "We thank PM Modi for his pledge to build a grand statue for Rajendra Chola, who is renowned for constructing a large navy amongst Indian kings and for leading Naval campaigns in the Southeast Asia."
A special tribute was also paid to Rajendra Chola with the release of Rs 1,000 coin featuring his likeness, which brings pride and joy to all of us, Gangaikonda Cholapuram committee further said.
Speaking during a special function at the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Ariyalur district, PM Modi said that the Chola empire represented a golden era of India, marked by achievements in architecture, governance, diplomacy, trade, and cultural integration.
'The Cholas established strong political and trade ties with Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Southeast Asia. It is a coincidence that I returned from the Maldives yesterday, and today I stand here in the land once ruled by these visionary kings,' he remarked.

Despite US President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50% from August 6, a major chunk of Indian exports worth nearly $30 billion remains untouched for now. Key sectors like pharmaceuticals and electronics including smartphones and semiconductors continue to enjoy exemptions under a carve-out list that shields them from higher duties. The tariff hike, justified by the Trump administration as a response to India's continued procurement of Russian energy and arms is expected to impact India's labour-intensive export segments. However, shipments of critical products such as medicines, mobile phones and energy supplies have been spared at least for the moment. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In FY25, India exported pharmaceuticals and electronics worth $10.5 billion and $14.6 billion respectively to the US, together accounting for over 29% of its total exports to America which stood at $86.5 billion. Interestingly, India's petroleum exports amounting to $4.09 billion have also been excluded from the latest tariffs due to their placement in the energy exemption list. These high-value categories had previously escaped the initial 25% tariff announced on July 30 as well. While these exemptions offer temporary relief, uncertainty remains. Trump has warned of tariffs going as high as 250% on foreign-manufactured pharmaceuticals and the status of smartphones may shift depending on future policy decisions. The executive order signed on August 6 clarified that all goods currently listed under exemptions would continue to receive preferential access to the US market at lower or zero tariffs. The original 25% tariff was introduced after talks to finalise a limited trade deal between the two countries collapsed. That move, which takes effect on August 7, paved the way for this latest escalation. India and the US are still working towards concluding a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), targeted for finalisation by the end of the year.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that sweeping reforms introduced by his government over the past 11 years have transformed India's governance model into one that is transparent, sensitive, and citizen-centric. Citing the success of the JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile) trinity, Modi said that the initiative had plugged massive leakages in welfare schemes and prevented the theft of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore that was allegedly being siphoned off through 10 lakh fake beneficiaries under previous regimes. "Approximately 10 crore beneficiaries listed under various schemes such as the ration card, gas subsidy, and scholarships were found to be nonexistent. These individuals, who never actually existed, were being used by previous governments to funnel money to middlemen. However, these 10 crore fake names have now been removed from the list of beneficiaries by the incumbent government. According to an estimate, this cleanup has resulted in savings of over Rs 4.30 lakh crore, which would have otherwise gone into the wrong hands. Imagine theft of Rs 4.30 lakh crore. Now, this amount is being used for the development of this country," the prime minister said. PM Modi was speaking at an event at Kartavya Path after inaugurating Kartavya Bhavan (Common Central Secretariat Building) 3, the first of the 10 state-of-the-art Central government office complexes planned as part of the Central Vista redevelopment plan. These blocks will house offices of all ministries and associated departments, presently functioning from Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, North and South Blocks and other buildings located at different locations.

'Economic blackmail': Rahul Gandhi slams Trump's 50 per cent tariff on India
