Hoover cordless vacuum easily as good as Dyson but £190 cheaper

Daily Mirror21-05-2025

I compared Hoover's HF9 cordless vacuum cleaner to my Dyson V10 and there was one clear winner that's just had a £140 discount
The opportunity to try out various gadgets and gizmos is a major perk of this job, especially when they're a household essential like a vacuum cleaner. I've been using the Hoover HF9 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner With Anti Hair Wrap, which has just been reduced from £249 to £109 with the discount code POWERFUL.
This 56% discount is £34 cheaper than Amazon 's asking price (£143) and £140.99 less than Shark's Anti Hair Wrap Cordless Vacuum (£249.99). Hoover says the HF9 offers the 'perfect balance of suction power and effective run time for the whole house'.
It's said to boast 'double the suction power' compared to some 'popular competitors' and features Anti-Twist technology, which – similarly to Shark's Anti Hair Wrap – automatically removes hair from the brush bar as it cleans. This made it the ideal choice for our house, as our little dog is constantly shedding to the point that we have to vacuum every day.
The Hoover has three modes – Hard Floor, Carpet and Turbo – which adjust the suction power for different surfaces. The Carpet and Turbo modes are fairly loud but that's not surprising given the extra suction power and is worth it considering the ability to remove dirt embedded in the carpet.
I've read some reviews from customers who found the HF9 too heavy – I'd describe it as robust. It certainly has some weight to it, but this is more than offset by how easy it is to manoeuvre.
It glides effortlessly over our laminate floors and the flexible brush head means it's easy to clean in different directions, whether that's around table legs, along skirting boards or into corners. Having said that, someone who struggles lifting heavy objects may find themselves straining if using it for longer periods.
The vacuum's battery can last for 30 minutes – more than enough for a thorough clean of our little three-bed house – with the LED display showing how much battery life is left in minutes so you're not caught short. I cleaned the house from top to bottom with plenty of battery remaining and couldn't find any bits of debris I'd missed when performing a little post-Hoover inspection, so it's a winner on that front.
But for me, the standout feature of the Hoover HF9 is the LED lights in the brush head. I consider myself pretty clean and tidy, so I was shocked when the lights illuminated all the dust and dog hair I'd missed when using our old Dyson.
This allowed me to go back and really get into all the nooks-and-crannies for a more thorough, deep clean, converting it into a handled vacuum with the included crevice tool to tackle tricky areas like the sides of cabinets or cracks of the stairs. I'm comparing the Hoover to our Dyson Cyclone V10, which offers double the runtime of the Hoover, but at £299.99 it's almost three times the cost.
Our trusty old Dyson has had a good run, but we had to stop using it when it began scratching the floor and revert to an old-school broom. The Hoover has rubbery wheels, so thankfully I've been able to ditch the broom and now save so much time by giving it a quick run around the house each day.
The free-standing 'Park and Go' feature is another nifty feature I never knew I needed; it's incredibly handy being able to leave the Hoover standing unaided when moving objects out of the way – such as the dog bed or a row of trainers. Ultimately, the Hoover HF9 may not stand head-and-shoulders above premium rivals like Shark and Dyson, but it's easily just as good and therefore the clear winner considering it's so much cheaper.
Many of its features appear to be designed for simplicity – in a good way. It's incredibly simple to assemble within seconds, simply slot the three parts together and away you go. Emptying the dustbin is equally straightforward and done literally at the press of a button.
Give the huge price difference compared to its biggest rivals, the Hoover HF9 is more than adequate for cleaning dust, dirt and – most importantly for our house – dog hair. So much so that it begs the question, why fork out hundreds on a Shark or Dyson when this £109 Hoover does the job perfectly well?

Trump's inks order on US drones after Ukraine's shock attack on Russia while encouraging flying cars

President Donald Trump inked a new executive order on drone use in the U.S. following Ukraine 's stunning attack on Russian air bases – and last year's drone sightings in New Jersey. The new order is intended to boost U.S. national security – but it also encompasses Jetson's-style transport of the future, such as flying cars that could function as air taxes or deliver packages for companies like Jeff Bezos-owned Amazon. The orders are designed to remove regulatory barriers to their development. 'Flying cars are not just for `The Jetsons.´' 'They´re also for the American people,' said Michael Kratsios, assistant to the president and director of the White House office of Science and Technology Policy. More than 20 years after the Concord stopped flying, Americans also could sometime hitch a ride on a cross-country supersonic flight. Trump issued the order because he wants to counter the threats drones pose to national security under new rules released Friday. He did so on a day he was feuding with Elon Musk, finally breaking his silence Friday evening. The orders are also aimed at making it easier for Americans to fly faster than the speed of sound and expedite the development of the flying cars of the future. The three executive orders will encourage the Federal Aviation Administration to expedite rules to allow companies to use drones beyond their operators' line of sight, while also imposing restrictions meant to help protect against terrorism, espionage and public safety threats. Drones are already used in a variety of ways, including bolstering search and rescue operations, applying fertilizer, inspecting power lines and railroad bridges, and even delivering packages. But the war in Ukraine has highlighted how drones could be used in a military or terrorist attack - a concern as the World Cup and Olympics approach in the U.S. There also have been espionage cases where drones have been used to surveil sensitive sites. And White House officials said drones are being used to smuggle drugs over the border, and there are concerns about the potential for a disastrous collision between a drone and an airliner around an airport. 'These orders also address the growing threat of criminal, terrorist and foreign misuse of drones in U.S. airspace. We have a responsibility to protect and restore airspace sovereignty,' said Kratsois. With major events like the World Cup scheduled in the U.S. next year, Sebastian Gorka, senior director for counterterrorism on the National Security Council, said it´s crucial to protect the airspace above large public events. A federal task force will be created to review drone threats and existing terrorism task forces will look at drones. 'Drones are a disruptive technology. They have an amazing potential for both good and ill,' Gorka said. 'We will increase the enforcement of current laws to deter two types of individuals: evildoers and idiots - the clueless and the careless.' The orders direct the FAA to expedite a new rule restricting drone flights over sensitive sites and work with the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security to better enforce laws on illegal drone use. The FAA has been testing systems to detect and counter drones that the White House would like to expand to deal with threats to public safety and national security. Among the methods being examined: Using radio signals to jam drones or force them to land. Authorities are weighing whether to deploy high-powered microwaves or laser beams to disable the devices. The order will allow state and local authorities to be trained to respond to unauthorized drones and expand the government´s ability to counter them. Law enforcement agencies also may receive additional training on how to use drones themselves to ensure safety around major events. One of Trump's orders directs the FAA to eliminate the 1973 speed restriction that prohibits flights over Mach 1 and replace it with a noise standard. New technology in supersonic aircraft can allow the planes to fly faster than the speed of sound without a disruptive sonic boom being heard on the ground, but the regulations still ban those flights over land. A plane developed by Boom Supersonic became the first independently funded jet to break the sound barrier this year. 'The reality is that Americans should be able to fly from New York to LA in under four hours,' Kratsios said. 'Advances in aerospace engineering, material science and noise reduction now make overland supersonic flight not just possible, but safe, sustainable and commercially viable.' Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom Supersonic, said a renaissance in supersonic passenger travel is made inevitable with the repeal of the ban. 'We´re grateful to President Trump for his leadership - this important step allows us to accelerate development of our Overture supersonic airliner,' Scholl said. Several companies are also developing flying cars for use as taxis and delivering cargo. They are likely still at least a couple years away from being ready, but orders are designed to remove regulatory barriers to their development. 'Flying cars are not just for `The Jetsons.´' 'They´re also for the American people,' Kratsios said. The executive orders don't ban Chinese-made drones, including those by DJI that are popular in the U.S., but the Trump administration said it will prioritize American-made drones in federal procurement programs and open up grants to help state and local first responders buy U.S. drones. The White House said it would seek to reduce the U.S. reliance on foreign-made drones and restrict foreign devices in sensitive areas. 'This executive order marks a long-overdue investment in drone deterrence,' said Craig Singleton, a senior China fellow at the Washington-based think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies. 'Drone warfare isn´t a future threat - it´s already here.' The administration also is mandating national security reviews of some Chinese drone makers. That 'underscores that drone supply chains ... are now national security flashpoints,' Singleton said. The orders also tighten rules on wireless transmission tech, which Singleton said would disrupt the ability by Chinese drones to transmit data back to Beijing. States and the federal government are increasingly wary about Chinese technology, and at least six states have passed laws to restrict government purchases of Chinese drones because of concerns about spying. That´s part of a slew of more than 240 anti-China measures state legislatures have considered this year. Congress has also banned federal agencies from acquiring Chinese drones, with some exceptions. But most commercial drones sold in the United States are made in China, and many Americans have come to rely on them. The Chinese models are widely known for their high performance and are generally significantly cheaper than American-made drones. The FAA has generally prohibited drones from operating outside operators' line of sight because of safety concerns, but the agency has granted hundreds of waivers to Amazon and some other companies, including utilities and railroads, to use drones farther away. Drone manufacturers and users have long wanted rules that spell out the framework for such flights because they see that as a natural next step to unlock the technology's potential. The head of the trade advocacy group Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International, or AUVSI, testified to Congress this week that the FAA missed a deadline for approving such rules last year. On Friday, Michael Robbins, chief executive officer of AUVSI, applauded the Trump administration for advancing policies that he said would ensure U.S. leadership in drone innovation, security, operation and manufacturing. He called it 'a historic day for the drone industry in the United States.' ___ Funk reported from Omaha, Nebraska. Associated Press writer Leah Askarinam contributed from Washington.

Being faced with a ton of brands can actually make finding the best Father's Day gift overwhelming. This is what makes Amazon so helpful when you're in a dilemma: The retailer has a varied lineup of ideas for Father's Day gifts, including ones across categories like tech, small kitchen appliances, apparel and much more, many of which are on sale and eligible for expedited shipping with a Prime membership. Plus, Amazon sells products from top brands like Apple, Anker, Lego and other NBC Select favorites. The holiday falls on June 15 this year, and Amazon also has a disclaimer confirming if your gift will arrive before Father's Day. Below, we rounded up the best Father's Day gifts on Amazon to consider this year. The best Amazon Father's Day gift ideas in 2025 Below, I've rounded up the best Father's Day gift ideas on Amazon for each and every type of father, including products we've reviewed in the past along with some NBC Select staff favorites. Be sure to check shipping times to confirm that your gift will arrive on time and avoid showing up to the celebrations empty handed. Gifts under $50 There are a lot of true crime fans on our team at NBC Select, so I can say with authority that if your dad is an armchair detective himself (or just loves a good puzzle), he'll love this puzzle book from Murdle. It has 100 original murder mystery puzzles to help your dad get his detective fix without having to leave home. The puzzles include maps, codes, drawings and more — everything your dad needs to crack the code and solve the crime. If your dad is always on the move, consider getting him a portable charger to keep his devices fully charged while he's on the go. This powerbank from Anker (one of our favorite tech brands) is the go-to personal charger of NBC Select reporter Harry Rabinowitz, who says it saves him from stressing about his phone or earbud battery levels. Commerce editor Cory Fernandez also has this power bank and loves how quickly it charges his phone and Airpods and still has more battery left. It has a built-in USB-C cable (so no need to pack an extra charging cord), and is wallet-sized for easy transport. It can deliver up to two full charges for most smartphones, according to the brand. There's nothing my dad and brothers love more than a cozy pair of sweats, and this Father's Day you can give your dad his new favorite pair. These joggers from Hanes are made from a mid-weight fleece that's great for year-round wear, especially around the house, and have side-seam pockets along with a back pocket to help hold all of his essentials, according to the brand. They're also machine-washable on a cold cycle. MTEN Pickleball Set Nowadays, it feels like every tennis court has a space for pickleball, and now you can help your dad get in on the fun. This set comes with two USA Pickleball Association-approved paddles, made from a lightweight fiberglass and polypropylene material that helps to reduce vibrations and give your dad a stable strike on the court, according to the brand. The paddles also have ergonomic, sweat-absorbing handles, and come with four outdoor pickle balls, two grip tapes, and a carry bag to store everything in. Gifts under $100 Apple Airtag The Apple Airtag is our pick for the best iOS Bluetooth tracker for our NBC Select Travel Awards because of how easy to use and versatile it is. Rabinowitz says he uses his Airtags for every kind of travel, including short commutes and longer vacations. It pairs easily with Apple's FindMy app, which can help pinpoint the precise location of your tag within 30 feet, or the general location if it's outside of that range, according to the brand. Plus, Fernandez puts an Airtag in his wallet (with a holder) to prevent losing it when traveling abroad. This portable blender has a powerful motor that'll help to keep your father's mixtures smooth and consistent, and was also recommended to us by kitchen experts. It has a tumbler that fits two cups of ingredients, and includes two cups and lids to help store his smoothies, according to the brand. The blender's pieces are also top-rack dishwasher-safe. Everyone on our team knows by now how much I love my Lego sets, and if your dad is a Star Wars fan, he'll love this one too. It's a collectible model of the Millennium Falcon spaceship, including building instructions and 921 pieces of Lego bricks, according to the brand. While taking photos on your phone is quick and easy, this photo printer can help to make those memories last in a physical form as well. The printer connects to devices via Bluetooth, and includes a charging cable and a pack of Kodak photo paper, which is made using embedded dye crystals that remove the need for any expensive ink cartridges, according to the brand. Gifts $100 and up Amazon Kindle Paperwhite This is our pick for best overall e-reader because of its user-friendly design, and how easy and enjoyable it made reading — 'Using a Kindle single-handedly changed the way I read,' says NBC Select commerce editor Lindsay Schneider. The screen's brightness can be adjusted to your dad's preferred color settings, and the e-reader can also hold audiobooks (just in case your dad prefers to listen to his books instead). It's lightweight, compact and has no glare, making it the ideal pick for your favorite book-loving dad. This bird feeder is great for both bird watching experts and amateurs. It has a built-in battery and a camera with 1080P resolution, so your dad can view birds 24/7, according to the brand. It uses Wi-Fi connectivity that allows it to be installed without any outlets, and connects to the Birdfy app, which includes feeder footage and more. Aura Digital Picture Frame Digital photo frames are a great way to display memories, and this Aura frame is one of the very best. It's easy to set up using Wi-Fi, and your dad can easily add photos and videos from his phone to the frame using the Aura app, according to the brand. It has an HD display and unlimited storage, and your dad can also invite others to share photos to the frame as well. You can even pre-load the frame with your favorite family photos as a fun surprise for him to unwrap. Not only are these one of Sony's best over-ear headphones, they're also an NBC Select Wellness Awards winner. They're lightweight and comfortable with a great sound quality, and can last for up to 30 hours with a fully-charged battery, according to the brand. The headphones also have a very powerful active noise cancellation setting. Why trust NBC Select?
