What Ryan Matterson has said about extending his Warrington Wolves stay

Yahooa day ago
RYAN Matterson's Warrington Wolves debut has already left fans wanting more in both the short and long-term.
His showing in defeat to Leigh Leopards last week is made all the more impressive given the context of it being his first game in more than two months and having moved to the other side of the world at less than a week's notice.
Many have seen enough to know they want to see his current arrangement – a loan deal for the rest of 2025 before returning to NRL side Parramatta Eels – made more permanent.
And it appears that also goes for the Wire hierarchy, with Matterson revealing the club have already engaged his management about a longer stay at The Halliwell Jones Stadium – and it's something he says he is open to, albeit it is far from being his current focus.
'I'm loving it,' he said in his first sit-down with the media following his arrival.
'From the top all the way to the fans, everyone has been so welcoming. I can't speak highly enough of Gary (Chambers), Sam (Burgess) and all of the boys – it's been a very smooth transition.'
When asked about being open to staying at Warrington for 2026, he replied: 'Most definitely. Whatever is the right fit for me is something I want to do.
'I'm definitely contracted to Parramatta for next year but I hadn't played much football this year, so I really needed to take the field and enjoy playing football again.
'You can't change teams within Australia after June 30, so my manager spoke to Warrington and it was a perfect opportunity to come over here.
'It all happened that quickly that I can only think short-term in terms of enjoying my football and experiencing Super League and England. I'm enjoying it so far.
'The club has spoken to my manager about the future and next year, but I've told my manager he can sort that out.
'I'm only focusing on the short-term in terms of this week and a big game against Wigan.'

And while he had an inkling of what to expect when he took the field, he admits he did not have chance to give it too much thought.
'I had four days to get everything sorted,' he said.
'I was more focused on getting my visa sorted, my flights and all that type of thing.
'Then when I got here, it was about ticking boxes and making sure my body was right, getting to meet the players, learning the plays and the structure.
'I was taking so much in so I didn't have time to worry about anything other than being present.
'Having so little time to prep probably did me good.
'I've had a lot of injuries this year. I've just come back from a nine-week injury and my first game back was on Friday night, so it was good to get some game time.
'I'm going to be better for it – I'm over the injury now and I'm looking for a strong end to the season.'
As a veteran of more than 180 NRL games for Sydney Roosters, Wests Tigers and the Eels, not much in rugby league is new to Matterson.
However, he gets his first taste of what is one of Super League's leading rivalries to mark his home debut for the club.
With Wigan flying high in second and Warrington down in eighth and struggling to make the play-offs, the visitors will be favourites but Matterson insists those inside the group would not see it as a shock if they bagged two points on Friday.
And in the build-up, simply being around the town has made clear to him just how important this game is.
'With the fans over here and how loud they are, people live and breath rugby league here,' he said.
'I've really noticed that driving around Warrington – I've got the club car with all the badges on so I'm getting a lot of taps on the windows saying we need to fix this and that.
'There's a lot of coaches out there but I enjoy it – I love playing for a passionate town.
'Playing in such an emotional game is a privilege because it means the people before you have created this path.
'There's a lot of history and expectation, so I'll go out there and play with pride.
'If we put in the performance we know we can at the weekend and get two points, everyone will be shocked by the result but in house, we won't be shocked.
'With how we've prepped since we've been here, there's a lot of good things that I'm seeing.
'There's been lapses – the players have been speaking about it being a familiar Achilles heel.
'We have the players, the ability and the grunt but these lapses have been bringing teams back into games when we should be wrapping them up.
'If we nullify those errors, we'll go a long way towards winning.'

Photo by Til Buergy/EPA Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Spain replaced the United States atop the FIFA women's soccer world rankings, which were released Thursday, despite a loss to England in the Euro 2025 finale. Spain, the most recent (2023) World Cup champions, posted a 6-1 record since the last edition of the women's world rankings. The Spaniards' lone loss was a penalty kick setback to England in the Euro finale July 27 in Basel, Switzerland. The Americans, the most-recent (2024) Olympic gold medalists, are 3-0 since the last edition of the rankings. The next version of the rankings will be released Dec. 10. Sweden moved up three spots to No. 3 in the world. No. 4 England and No. 5 German round out the Top 5. No. 6 France moved up four spots. No. 7 Brazil, No. 8 Japan, No. 9 Canada and No. 10 Korea round out the Top 10. No. 104 Bangladesh made the biggest leap up the rankings, climbing 24 spots. Mongolia took the biggest fall, moving down 22 spots to No. 148. The United States Women's National Team will battle Portugal in two friendlies in October. The first match will be Oct. 23 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pa. The Americans will face Portal on Oct. 26 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. "Portugal is a growing team that will be highly motivated for these matches, but as always, these three games are more opportunities to work on us," U.S. manager Emma Hayes said in a news release. "I'm very impressed with the progress we've made since the Olympics and I want to give a lot of credit to the players for embracing our culture and ideas, but our staff and the players know we still have much work to do before World Cup qualifying next year." Spain will face Sweden on Oct. 24 and 28 in the UEFA Women's Nations League.

How to watch Crystal Palace vs Liverpool live: Community Shield stream, TV channel, team news, prediction

Crystal Palace and Liverpool meet at Wembley on Sunday in the FA Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser for the domestic season in England. FA Cup holders Palace will be eager to win even more silverware as Oliver Glasner's side have had a disrupted summer following their heroic defeat of Manchester City in the FA Cup final at the end of last season. Palace have been demoted from the UEFA Europa League to the Conference League due to rules regarding multi-club ownership but they've appealed that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and will find out the verdict soon. American billionaire Woody Johnson has agreed to buy the majority stake in the club from fellow American John Textor whose Eagles Football group are at the center of the dispute over Palace's demotion to the Conference League. On the pitch they've managed to keep hold of key players Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze for now. Liverpool continue to mourn the loss of Diogo Jota after his tragic death in a car accident in Spain over the summer. On the pitch, Arne Slot has added plenty of new players this summer with Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong all arriving to boost his squad. Luis Diaz has left and Darwin Nunez appears to be on the way out too to help offset some of the huge spending, while Alexander Isak is also a target for Liverpool. It's clear the Reds aim to make the most of their title win last season and are now focused on winning the Champions League, and everything else, too. How to watch Crystal Palace vs Liverpool live, stream link and start time Kick off time: 10am ET Sunday (August 10)Venue: Wembley Stadium — LondonTV Channel/Streaming: ESPN+ Crystal Palace team news, focus Long-term absentees Chadi Riad and Cheick Doucoure remain out but Crystal Palace have a full squad to choose from aside from that. Oliver Glasner has called for some additions to be made but given the change in ownership dragging on and the uncertainty over which European competition they will play in, there hasn't been much movement in Palace's squad this summer. Eze, Guehi, Mateta, Henderson and Wharton are the spine of the team and that remains intact, while the likes of Munoz and Kamada will look to build on a superb end to last season. Liverpool team news, focus There are very few injury concerns for Liverpool as they lined up the quartet of Mohamed Salah, Wirtz, Ekitike and Cody Gakpo from the start against Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday. Slot is trying to get the balance right so he can put as much attacking talent on the pitch as possible at the same time. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are struggling with injury, while Virgil van Dijk missed the games against Bilbao due to illness and goalkeeper Alisson returned to Brazil for private reasons. Crystal Palace vs Liverpool prediction This is always a funny game to predict but it feels like Liverpool will lay down a marker for the levels they're going to try and reach this season. Given the uncertain offseason Palace have had, they'll be competitive but it feels like they've stood still. Crystal Palace 1-3 Liverpool.
