Sacramento State to join Big West in 2026, except for football
Sacramento State officials have sought a waiver for the Hornets' football program to leave the Football Championship Subdivision for the Football Bowl Subdivision.
On Monday, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee delivered its recommendation that the Division I Council should not support the request. The council's formal decision has yet to be made.
In the meantime, Sacramento State will move all its other sports, most notably men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball, to the Big West. The Hornets previously were an affiliate member of the Big West for baseball from 1996-2002.
The rest of the conference includes California Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge (CSUN), UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Utah Valley.
The Big Sky will drop to nine members, mostly concentrated in Washington state, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

Paul's talks over a fight with Joshua, 35, collapsed over network-related issues, per The Ring. Joshua generally fights on DAZN, while Paul has boxed on both DAZN and Netflix in recent months. His bout with Chavez Jr streamed on DAZN, while his previous outing – a highly controversial fight with heavyweight legend Mike Tyson, 59, whom Paul outpointed – streamed on Netflix. Paul vs Davis is due to air on Netflix, too. 'Gervonta who has been disrespecting my name for too long,' Paul wrote on X on Wednesday (20 August). Brewers eager to regroup vs. Cubs in series finale
August 21 - Any concern about the major-league-leading Milwaukee Brewers losing three straight games for the first time since May 7-10 clearly is not shared by Christian Yelich. The veteran slugger and the visiting Brewers will look to end the skid in the finale of a five-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Chicago emerged with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday after Daniel Palencia stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning for his 18th save. Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw made a stellar defensive play in the sixth inning and hit a solo homer in the eighth to bring the home crowd to its feet. "This was unbelievable," Shaw said.
