Sacramento State to join Big West in 2026, except for football
Sacramento State officials have sought a waiver for the Hornets' football program to leave the Football Championship Subdivision for the Football Bowl Subdivision.
On Monday, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee delivered its recommendation that the Division I Council should not support the request. The council's formal decision has yet to be made.
In the meantime, Sacramento State will move all its other sports, most notably men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball, to the Big West. The Hornets previously were an affiliate member of the Big West for baseball from 1996-2002.
The rest of the conference includes California Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge (CSUN), UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Utah Valley.
The Big Sky will drop to nine members, mostly concentrated in Washington state, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

Jake Paul's cryptic four-word message provides hint over Anthony Joshua fight
Jake Paul has hinted that his hopes of fighting Anthony Joshua are still alive, as he prepares to box Gervonta Davis next. YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul had been in talks to face former heavyweight champion Joshua, but on Wednesday announced a November bout with 'Tank' Davis, who holds the WBA lightweight title. Rules for the 14 November contest, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, are yet to be announced, with a key factor being the weight disparity between the two Americans. Paul, 28, weighed in at 199.4lb for his last fight, a cruiserweight points win over ex-world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June. Meanwhile, 30-year-old Davis last weighed in at 133.8lb, when he controversially drew with Lamont Roach Jr in March. Therefore, the disparity between Paul and Davis's respective last weights is 65.6lb, while the influencer stands at 6ft 1in compared to his opponent's 5ft 5in. After announcing the fight, Paul took to X/Twitter to write, 'First David, then Goliath,' in an apparent reference to his aim of facing Joshua next. Paul's talks over a fight with Joshua, 35, collapsed over network-related issues, per The Ring. Joshua generally fights on DAZN, while Paul has boxed on both DAZN and Netflix in recent months. His bout with Chavez Jr streamed on DAZN, while his previous outing – a highly controversial fight with heavyweight legend Mike Tyson, 59, whom Paul outpointed – streamed on Netflix. Paul vs Davis is due to air on Netflix, too. 'Gervonta who has been disrespecting my name for too long,' Paul wrote on X on Wednesday (20 August). 'HIs nickname might be Tank, but I'm an FPV drone and I'm about to disable tiny boy. 'Yes, he's 1 of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but my motto is anyone, anytime, anyplace, against all odds. And I like my odds.' Davis is widely regarded as one of boxing 's hardest punchers, with his 30-0 professional record including 28 knockouts. He had been in talks over a rematch with Roach Jr but will instead face Paul, whose pro record stands at 12-1 (7 KOs). Paul's sole loss came at the hands of Tommy Fury – half-brother of heavyweight star Tyson Fury – in 2023. He holds wins over numerous high-profile mixed martial artists and lesser-known boxers. Meanwhile, Davis's standout win was a 2022 stoppage of Ryan Garcia, and he has also beaten the likes of Rolly Romero, Mario Barrios, Isaac Cruz and Leo Santa Cruz. Roach Jr reacted to Wednesday's news by tweeting, 'Told ya lol [laugh out loud],' adding several duck emojis, suggesting that Davis was avoiding their rematch.

Brewers eager to regroup vs. Cubs in series finale
August 21 - Any concern about the major-league-leading Milwaukee Brewers losing three straight games for the first time since May 7-10 clearly is not shared by Christian Yelich. The veteran slugger and the visiting Brewers will look to end the skid in the finale of a five-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Chicago emerged with a 4-3 victory on Wednesday after Daniel Palencia stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning for his 18th save. Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw made a stellar defensive play in the sixth inning and hit a solo homer in the eighth to bring the home crowd to its feet. "This was unbelievable," Shaw said. "I mean, this might be the loudest I've ever seen this place. The fans came out and we played a really good ballgame." The Cubs have won five of their past six to cut the Brewers' lead atop the National League Central to six games. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has lost four of its last five since winning 14 consecutive games, a single-season franchise record. "If everyone thought we were going to go undefeated the rest of the season, then you don't watch baseball," Yelich said. "This is part of a baseball season. Things don't go your way all the time. This team is fine. We're very resilient. We're not happy that we lost (Wednesday), but overall we're pretty happy with how we competed." Brice Turang had three hits in the defeat for the Brewers, who went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. "We didn't get the outcome we wanted, but we showed tremendous heart and tremendous relentlessness," Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said. "They got clutch hits, they made every defensive play, and that's just baseball." Milwaukee will send right-hander Quinn Priester (11-2, 3.48 ERA) to the mound in the series finale against Chicago left-hander Shota Imanaga (8-5, 3.06). Priester, 24, allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Acquired from the Boston Red Sox on April 7, Priester has played a critical role in Milwaukee's success this season. He has allowed just 17 home runs in 23 games (18 starts) covering 124 innings. Nico Hoerner is 4-for-8 with a home run against Priester, who is 1-0 with a 7.31 ERA in three career games (one start) versus the Cubs. Priester was rocked in a relief outing against Chicago on May 2 (seven runs in 4 1/3 innings) before beating the Cubs with 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball on July 29. Imanaga, 31, turned in another strong outing on Saturday, giving up one run over seven innings in a no-decision against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Imanaga has posted a 2.25 ERA in three starts this month covering 20 innings. He has struck out 22 and walked just two over that stretch. William Contreras is 3-for-7 with two homers against Imanaga, who is 1-2 with a 7.20 ERA in three career starts against Milwaukee. Imanaga lost to the Brewers on May 4, when he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings. He strained his left hamstring in that contest and landed on the injured list for nearly two months. Imanaga earned a victory at Milwaukee on July 30, when he fanned eight over five innings of three-run ball. Cubs manager Craig Counsell has rested struggling right fielder Kyle Tucker for each of the past three games. After the Wednesday contest, Counsell confirmed a report that Tucker was diagnosed in June with a hairline fracture in his right hand. "He was sore for a little while but was able to play," Counsell said. "He had some more imaging, and it showed a small fracture that was healing." The injury could be a factor in the four-time All-Star's extended slump. Tucker is batting .182 (16-for-88) with one homer and three steals in 26 games since the All-Star break. --Field Level Media

Incredible moment former Liverpool star Javier Mascherano issues tactical instructions on the PHONE from the stands after being sent off
Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano was spotted barking orders at his assistant manager over the phone after being sent off during their clash with Tigres. With Lionel Messi watching on from the stands with an injury, Miami took on the Mexican side in the quarter-final of the Leagues Cup on Wednesday. And the David Beckham-owned club got off to an ideal start, with star striker Luis Suarez putting them in front from the penalty spot with 23 minutes on the clock. The remainder of the first half was a somewhat cagey and subdued affair - until Mascherano was left incensed by referee Mario Escobar on the stroke of half time. As his side tried to hold on to their lead heading into the break, the referee played on past the four minutes of added time earlier indicated by the fourth official, prompting an angered reaction from the former Liverpool midfielder. The outburst gave Escobar little choice but to issue Mascherano with a red card, meaning the 41-year-old would have to watch the second half of the tie from the stands. Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano — who is sitting in the stands after a red card — talking on the phone to his assistant coach Lucas Rodriguez Pagano. — Tom Bogert (@tombogert) August 21, 2025 That didn't stop Mascherano from ensuring his instructions reached the Miami players nevertheless as, with 57 minutes gone, the manager was seen frantically talking tactics over the phone with his assistant Lucas Rodrigues Pagano. And it seems the peculiar method of management paid off as the Herons ultimately progressed to the semi-final of the Leagues Cup after Suarez fired home the winner, another penalty, in the dying embers of the game following an Angel Correa equaliser. Suarez's pal and team-mate Messi was spotted celebrating the winner from a pitch-side box with his son and the Uruguayan's boy Benjamin. Inter Miami assistant Javier Morales discussed Mascherano's red card post-match, explaining the reasoning behind the boss's outburst. 'The referee added four minutes and we ended up playing six minutes, so we argued about the time,' he said. 'We're human, we start to talk and the referee said Javier got a red card and that's it. We didn't have much information. 'We complained about the time, he said four minutes and then they're playing six.' Miami will now face their Florida rivals Orlando City in the semi-final of the competition next week. Orlando, who sit one place above the Herons in the MLS league table, have beaten Mascherano's side twice already this season. Miami travel to Washington this weekend to face D.C. United as they continue their bid for a play-off place come the end of the season.
