Thanatharn selected as new UH softball head coach
The University of Hawai'i has ushered in a new era in Rainbow Wahine softball, naming Panita Thanatharn as its next head coach, the school announced Wednesday, four weeks after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Thanatharn, a Long Beach State alumna, spent the past 14 seasons on staff with the 49ers, including the last nine as associate head coach. During her tenure, she helped lead LBSU to four Big West Conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. She now takes the reins from legendary head coach Bob Coolen, who retired after 34 seasons at UH. Coolen leaves behind a storied legacy that includes more than 1,100 career wins, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Women's College World Series in 2010. Among the finalists for the position was longtime UH assistant coach Dee Wisneski. Key returnees for the 2026 season include standout players Milan Ah Yat and Carys Murakami, serving as a strong foundation as Thanatharn begins her tenure. Utah Valley set to join Big West Conference for 2026-27 athletic year
OREM, Utah — Utah Valley is joining the Big West conference for the 2026-27 athletic year, giving the league a presence in that state for the first time since Utah State ended a 27-year run in 2005. The conference said Wednesday it remained open to the possibility of adding a 12th member but anticipated being an 11-school league when Utah Valley and California Baptist officially join July 1, 2026.

Hawaii softball falls in Big West Conference Semifinals
The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine came into Friday in the Big West Conference Semifinals on the winners side of the bracket. UH took on CSUN in the morning for a chance to clinch a spot in Saturdays Championship game. Hawaii started the game off with a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, but in the 2nd CSUN took a 3-1 lead and made it difficult for UH to regain. Hawaii scored 1 run in the 6th to pull within 2 runs. In the 7th inning, Hawaii looked like they had some momentum to kick start another late game run after scoring 1 run from a Jamie McGaughey homerun. But CSUN was able to close the door on UH, Hawaii fell 4-3. After the loss, Hawaii still with a chance to advance to the championship game as they took on UCSB in the losers bracket semifinals. But Hawaii played from behind the entire game as the Guachos did not make it easy on UH as UCSB scored 1 run in the 1st and then another 5 in the 4th. Hawaii tried to get late game momentum after they scored a run in the 6th and had runners on base, but just unable to make up the deficit. The Rainbow Wahine fall 8-1 and end their Big West Conference Tournament 2-2. UH ends their season 33-20 and 17-10 in conference. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Hawaii scores 10 in Big West Tournament 1st round win
The Big West Conference got the softball conference tournament underway on Wednesday with (5) Hawaii facing off against (4) Long Beach State. Long Beach State took a 1-0 lead after the 1st, but Hawaii's bats came alive in the 3rd inning as the Rainbow Wahine scored 3 runs with help from a 2-run homer from Chloe Borges and a solo shot from Izabella Martinez. But the Beach retook the lead with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 3rd, but Hawaii's bats not slowing down as UH scored 4 runs in the 4th inning and another 3 in the 5th. Hawaii held off LBSU late push as UH wins 10-8 to advance to the 2nd round. The Rainbow Wahine finished with 11 hits on the day to LBSU 10 hits. Martinez led the way with 4-for-5, 4 RBIs, 1 2b and 1 HR. Carys Murakami and Chloe Borges also add 2 hits and 3 RBIs each in the Hawaii win. (5) Hawaii will take on (1) Cal State Fullerton on Thursday at 11:00am HT. The Rainbow Wahine won the regular season series 2-1. For FULL BIG WEST SOFTBALL BRACKET, click here. University of Hawaii's Ostrowski heads to NCAA DI Championships
University of Hawaii Swimmer Karol Ostrowski is headed to compete in the NCAA Division I Championships in the final week of March. The Hawaii senior qualified in the 50 Free competition. Ostrowski is the lone male swimmer from UH and the entire Big West Conference to qualify in the DI Championships. The Poland native is also a former Olympian (2020) and he is using that experience and his previous NCAA Championship to prepare for this year. 'I was training really hard the whole season and I always just to have fun, stick to the plan, have fun and enjoy it,' said Ostrowski. The Swimmer is impressive in the pool according to his peers, as he makes it seem effortless in the pool. 'He connects really well with the water and he's able to do everything you could ever ask. When he is swimming fast, it looks like he's going very smoothly and he's not fighting the water, but he loves to work with it. He's just a all around Waterman,' said Hawaii Head Coach Steve Allnutt.
