Sac State athletics to join Big West in all but football in 2026
Sacramento State athletics will be joining the Big West Conference effective July 1, 2026, in everything but football, sources confirmed to CBS Sacramento on Thursday.
On Monday, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee recommended to the Division 1 Council not to support Sacramento State's waiver request to join the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football.
Sacramento State currently plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
The Hornets are still awaiting an official decision from the council on that waiver, which should come next week. If denied, sources say Sacramento State's short-term plan is to remain in the FCS as an independent.
Sacramento State has been a member of the Big Sky Conference since 1996.

"I think it was pretty obvious that stuff was brewing," White said, via Indy Star. "When officials don't get control of the ball game, when they allow that stuff to happen … it's been happening all season long, all season long. It's not just this game. "This is what happens. You've got competitive women who are the best in the world at what they do and when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they're gonna compete, and they're gonna have their teammates' backs. It's exactly what you would expect out of fierce competition. "I started talking to officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was gonna happen. You knew this was gonna happen. When Adriana Smith brought her dachshund Bucky to the seventh annual Meadowlands Racetrack Wiener Dog Derby, she wasn't expecting much. Last year he didn't even finish the race. 'He got lost,' Smith said. 'He had no idea where he was going.' But, to Smith's shock, Bucky had laserlike focus this year. He didn't get lost. Egged on by the roaring crowd of thousands, Bucky's tiny legs carried him over the finish line ahead of the other sausage dogs. He had outrun 79 other wieners to clinch the championship.

Real American Freestyle wrestling to debut at Cleveland's Wolstein Center with Olympic medalists
Real American Freestyle wrestling's inaugural event will be held at the 13,000-seat Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio on Aug. 30, commissioner Hulk Hogan said in a statement. 'Cleveland is an incredible city, and Real American Freestyle is channeling its rock and roll style into this first event,' he said. The first set of matches and the location for the new promotion's first event were announced Wednesday. The first two women's matches are American Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Mexico's Zeltzin Hernandez Guerra and American Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades vs. Mexico's Alejandra Rivera Arriaga. The men's matches so far are Real Woods vs. Darrion Caldwell and Austin Gomez vs. Lance Palmer. The format will include eight men's and four women's matches.
