How Royals' John Rave prepared for stand-in role against White Sox on Saturday

Yahoo11 hours ago
Kansas City Royals outfielder John Rave was quick to grab his ball cap and glove from the dugout on Saturday night.
His number was called.
In the second inning, Rave raced to left field as a defensive replacement against the Chicago White Sox. He entered the game due to first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino exiting with a heat-related illness.
'I was told, 'Hey, if he can't go the rest of the at-bat, it's gonna be you,'' Rave said. 'So I started moving around again and started moving in the cage. Then, he finished the at-bat and I went out on defense. I came back in and took more swings in the cage and got ready pretty quickly.'
Pasquantino was unable to continue after his first at-bat. This shifted Nick Loftin — who started in left field — to first base while Rave was next in line to help the team.
Rave did just that. He finished 2-for-3 and hit a solo home run in the Royals' 6-2 victory at Kauffman Stadium.
'It's not always going to work out like that,' Rave said postgame. 'But yeah, just putting in the right work and try to be prepared as possible for when you get your at-bats and make them count.'
Rave belted his fourth career homer off White Sox starter Sean Burke in the third inning. He saw two curveballs before connecting on a 93.9 mph fastball. It was his first home run at Kauffman Stadium. He has hit safely in his last five games with an at-bat.
'Stayed on the heater and got one down in the zone and was able to drop the barrel to it,' Rave said. 'And put a good swing on it.'
This season, Rave has carved out a bench role with the Royals. He demonstrated his versatility by homering early, reaching on a sacrifice bunt and displaying smart baserunning by scoring from first base on a double.
The Royals needed it Saturday. KC (62-61) climbed one game above .500 for the first time since June 10.
'He was ready,' Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. 'I mean, as soon as he saw us go out there, I knew he was ready to go. … He wants to get in there every opportunity he can.'
Pasquantino agreed. He felt Rave did a great job filling in and helping the team secure a victory.
'I thought, obviously, the first at-bat was phenomenal and then laying down the bunt and scoring from first on the double, that's huge,' Pasquantino said. 'So him being ready like that, that to me shows the character of him, this team and everything. Just being ready to go like that is huge for us.'
Rave has appeared in 56 games this season. He made his MLB debut on May 26 against the Cincinnati Reds and now has added another hallmark moment during his rookie campaign.
'All of it happened kind of fast, but I try to show up to the park every day and prepare the same way, whether I'm in there or not,' Rave said. 'I had taken swings today and been moving around a little bit. So it usually doesn't happen that early in the game. Yeah, I was ready to go.'

NY Mets live updates from Little League Classic 2025 game vs Seattle Mariners

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Inside Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, the festival of baseball is in full swing. As the Little League World Series entered elimination Sunday, some of the best in the world dropped in for a brief stay. About four miles down the road from the picturesque Little League World Series Complex, the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners were set to close their three-game series at 7:10 p.m. in one of baseball's oldest ballparks - Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field - in the Little League Classic. In one of the banner events on the Major League Baseball calendar, both teams' players and coaches stopped in to visit with the competitors of the Little League World Series and their coaches before taking the field for the rubber game. The Mets and Mariners split the opening two games of their series, with the Mariners grabbing the opener, 11-9, before the Mets countered with a 3-1 victory behind Nolan McLean's sterling MLB debut on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field. As the Mets participated in the Little League Classic for the second time in their history, here are live updates throughout the event: Francisco Lindor, Edwin Diaz take in the Little League World Series It does not take long for the hundreds of fans, spectators and players to recognize that the Mets had made their arrival at the complex. The autographs continue in a gate section wedged between Little League Volunteer Stadium and Howard J. Lamade Stadium. On the famous hill flanking one of the most memorable ballparks of summer, Sean Manaea and Jeff McNeil take a memorable slide down the hill in front of the Grove, the dormitory complex for the little leaguers. Inside Volunteer Stadium, where Canada and Australia are competing in the second game of the day, Francisco Lindor stops high above the stadium to join the ESPN broadcast of the event. Meanwhile, in the seats, Edwin Diaz, decked in a teal and neon Puerto Rico shirt, sits among the little leaguers from his native country. Luisangel Acuña sits among the Venezuelan team. By now, the Little League swag has been spread around. Mark Vientos is spotted in a navy blue and red Mid-Atlantic jersey, while Brett Baty, Brooks Raley and Ryne Stanek are among the Mets players in a monochromatic hat. Juan Soto, Mets touch down at Williamsport Regional Airport All was quiet inside the Williamsport Regional Airport at around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday morning. A security agent snuck in breakfast in a small coffee shop while a woman and a young girl sat pressed to the window overlooking the runway. Other than those three people, the small community airport sat largely vacant. Outside on the tarmac, there was a degree of controlled pandemonium as a Delta jet came to a stop and the Latin America, donning orange and Mountain, decked in gold and red, waited for the stars of the show to descend the stairs. Outside on a fence bordering the runway, fans were pressed to the fence with signs. Members of the Mets went down the line, signing autographs for the two teams. Sean Manaea received an orange snapback hat from one of the players, while Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor lingered longer before boarding the bus to take in the day's action. Behind Kelsey Mitchell's career high, Indiana Fever pick up massive win

Behind Kelsey Mitchell's career high, Indiana Fever pick up massive win originally appeared on The Sporting News Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever season has not gone like she and the organization had planned. Clark has played 13 games, and numerous other members of the Indiana Fever have also missed time. On Sunday, Sophie Cunningham went out with a knee injury, and going forward, her status is unknown. Indiana was on the ropes of losing their third straight game, as the Connecticut Sun led the game by 21 points. The Sun came into the game with a 6-26 record, which was the worst in the league. But Kelsey Mitchell and her teammates were rock solid and finished off an overtime win. Indiana finished the 99-93 come-from-behind effort. At the end of regulation, Tina Charles and Aliyah Boston went back and forth, both scoring in the final minute to tie the game. Connecticut got the ball with just shy of 20.0 and drew up a play. The ball eventually got to Marina Mabrey, and she was unable to connect in the lane. Indiana called a timeout with 1.4 to go, but could not get a shot off in overtime. Kelsey Mitchell got the first basket of overtime, which was the first lead for the Fever since 4-3. After Connecticut tied the game, Mitchell struck again, with back-to-back three pointers, and another bucket to finish with a season high 38 points. Mabrey led Connecticut in scoring with 27 points, while Charles scored 21. Now, all eyes remain on Indiana, and whether they can reach the postseason. At 19-16, the Fever have nine games to go. The remainder of August will see Indiana taking on Minnesota in home and away games, followed by games against the Storm, Sparks, and Valkyries. The first game against the Lynx comes on Friday. In September, Indiana starts at Phoenix, before coming home to host the Chicago Sky. In the final two games, the Fever first play at the Washington Mystics, and then have another game at home against the Minnesota Lynx.
