
This New Zealand Artist Sculpts Animals From Layers Of Paint
Hannah Jensen Fox has carved a niche for herself – literally – by transforming layers of acrylic paint into breathtaking works of art. Drawing from her background in printmaking, she applies up to 80 layers of paint onto custom-made boards and canvases, then meticulously carves through them to reveal intricate images inspired by flora and fauna. This unique technique, developed during her time at Auckland University of Technology, results in textured, topographical pieces that celebrate the beauty of the natural world. From life-size animal portraits to delicate botanical studies, her work captures the essence of wildlife with remarkable depth and detail, as she pushes the boundaries of her medium. She shares the intricacies of her work process.
What are the greatest challenges you face when creating your artworks?
Self-doubt. I may be a positive person who is often viewed with endless energy, but I too have times when it all feels too much and I'm overloaded with work, trying to be the one-woman band running a business and keeping up with life. Allowing myself to be honest with my clients about what is going on and asking for more time, if needed, is the best way I can manage my workload. I am human after all.

How many projects you work on at any one time and how many artworks do you make per year?
Over three years, I can do a total of 200 commissioned works for clients all around the world. I also take a break from commissioned work to concentrate on my own works. It is an ebb and flow of concentrating on my own ideas and then opening up for commissioned works. When I am open for commissions, there is often an influx so I ride that wave. But while I finish the last few commissions, I am layering up the next boards for my ideas to follow.
When did you move to Christchurch, why do you choose to live and work there, and what have you been able to achieve there that you wouldn't have been able to anywhere else?
I moved to Christchurch in November 2018. I moved to be with the love of my life. My divine soulmate was born and bred in Christchurch, and I joined him there to adventure the beautiful South Island of New Zealand, after spending the previous 32 years in the North Island. It's a bit cooler down here, but mainly it's a quieter life that I surely prefer from the busy city of Auckland.

What was a memorable project you worked on?
One of my passion projects were two huge carvings: one of a rhino carved with blue-and-white china patterns, bringing into conversation the heartbreaking trade of rhino horn to China, and a whale work carved of flowers, a memorial to our dying oceans. 62 liters of paint were layered for these two works. The rhino is 3.3 meters long with 28 liters of paint layered and the whale is 3.6 meters long with 34 liters of paint layered. They are both made up of smaller panels so I could easily handle each piece, and then they are hung altogether.
What do you feel is the role of the artist in society?
To bring joy, to share stories, to challenge, stretch and push boundaries. A visual voice of history unfolding.
What do you hope to achieve or what message do you hope to convey through your art at the end of the day?
Mostly I want to bring a sense of joy through my work and how I share it. Sometimes my works have a sad story to go with them. I can only hope they spark some inspiration for the viewer to make changes in their day-to-day lives for more sustainable and healthier choices.

Army Corps of Engineers clears final Altadena property after Eaton Fire
After seven months, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has cleared the final pieces of debris from the Eaton Fire in Altadena. The remains of the destroyed home belonged to the late Los Angeles arts icon John Outterbridge. The mixed-media artist, educator and community activist was a pillar of the assemblage arts movement on the West Coast. His work is featured in exhibitions at LACMA and a digital archive at UCLA's Hammer Museum. "We've been unearthing an LA arts legacy here," daughter Tami Outterbridge said. "That's what we've been doing. We needed every single day, every single minute." Many of his pieces burned along with the family home. "It occurred to me I have lost all of my father's archival information, decades worth of history, of his legacy," Outterbridge's daughter said. "That almost bothered me the most." During a press conference on Thursday, Tami Outterbridge and her mother Beverly Outterbridge announced their effort to rebuild his archives with recovered pieces of his art. "Being able to find remnants has been so meaningful," Tami Outterbridge said. The Army Corps of Engineers said they have 1.4 million tons of debris and have cleared over 5,600 private properties in the Eaton Fire footprint. "Every cleared property represents progress," Lt. Col. David Weart said. "It means one more family can begin to rebuild and a small step towards healing."

I'm glad we got a house with my in-laws when I was pregnant. We have separate kitchens, plenty of space, and their support.
Living with family was a familiar part of growing up for me. When my in-laws suggested we buy a house together, I didn't think the idea was crazy. Multigenerational households have quadrupled since 1971, per data from Pew Research Center. When my in-laws suggested halfway through my pregnancy that we all buy a house together, the idea didn't seem like the most outrageous thing in the world. Growing up, I usually lived in some form of a multigenerational or multifamily household, as did may of my family members. One of my aunts lived with me, my mother, and brother for a time. After she had her son, she went to live with my grandmother and great-grandmother. When I went to art school, the deal my dad made with me for footing the bill was that I would move in with my grandmother. Living with extended family has always been a part of my life. Living this way was was practical While in school, me, my aunt, two of her kids, my grandmother, and my great-grandmother all lived in one house. Eating together, cooking for one another, and waiting an inordinate amount of time waiting to use the bathroom was expected. Ask anyone in this type of household, someone is always waiting to use the bathroom. But our house was just one of millions of families living with their parents and adult children, cousins, brothers and sisters, or grandparents and their grandchildren. According to the Pew Research Center, there were 59.7 million U.S. residents who lived with multiple generations under the same roof as of March 2021 — a number that has quadrupled since 1971. I've tried to live alone, but it never lasted long As a 20-something in the aughts, I was so excited to be in my very own apartment. But then the Great Recession of 2007 happened, and I was right back under my mother's roof along with my brother and a family friend who had been couch surfing. Now, here I am many years later, living in yet another multigenerational household with my husband, our daughter and my in-laws. It's going well so far. There are many benefits to living with family Living in close proximity to our family has afforded us many benefits, like allowing our toddler to see her grandparents every day. Occasionally, one of our families cooks and we all have dinner together. If one household is out of cheese, wine or bread, surely the other has some cheese, wine or bread to spare. When my in-laws dishwasher broke, they lugged all their wares upstairs to use ours. Now that our dishwasher is out of commission, we lug all dishes downstairs to use theirs. Whatever issues one of us faces usually works out because our support system is a little bigger than many. "It's Shangri La," as my father-in-law likes to put it. For us, living this way was a choice. No one was ill or unemployed. But when there has been a job loss or expensive home repairs are needed, we've been able to stay afloat. I think another reason our arrangement has worked for us so far, is that there is a degree of separation. There's literally a door that separates us. I think the door and the ability to have separate bathrooms and kitchens has really carried this whole thing forward more than anything else. I'm half-kidding of course. But having grown up in so many versions of the multigenerational households, I've spent a lot of time in closed quarters where there wasn't that extra bit of privacy.
