Op Bluestar anniv: Sikh community faces internal challenges, divisions
Jalandhar: Observing the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar, when Sikhs express anguish and make it evident that wounds of the army action at Golden Temple remain unhealed in their collective memory, it has become evident that in addition to challenges from outside, the community is now facing bigger challenges from within.
Riddled by a serious leadership crisis, internal conflicts are dominating major Sikh institutions, leading to erosion of their prestige and authority. Six months after the spectacle at Akal Takht on Dec 2 last year, when the world saw the most powerful political leaders of the community kneel before Sikh high priests, things have reached a point that a showdown is apprehended as warnings have been repeatedly issued that Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj would not be allowed to speak or honour the families of the "martyrs" killed in the 1984 army action.
In case a clash happens, it would not only add a blemished chapter to Sikh history, but would also be an irony as it would happen on such a sombre occasion and at the most sacred place for Sikhism, defiling of which remains a festering wound. Though some ruckus and, at times, scuffles have taken place on earlier occasions, these were between radicals and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) establishment.

This time, fault lines are very different, and there are apprehensions of things taking a nastier turn, as an organisation like the taksal is involved.
Damdami Taksal head Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, an ally of Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD until a few months ago, is at the centre of issuing warnings against Gargaj speaking on the occasion, while arguing that maryada was not followed for his appointment and he was not sarb-parvaanat (acceptable to all).
He renewed his warning on Thursday afternoon, and this has pushed the stakes high for either side. Nihang leader Baba Balbir Singh and a couple of other Nihang groups have also joined the chorus.
Interestingly, a few leaders and groups who had dual loyalty towards taksal and Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD are now clearly siding with the taksal, when a line has been drawn between the two.
SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami, known for his personal rapport with the taksal chief and giving cushion to him even as some SAD leaders attacked the latter, called on Dhumma, but he could not resolve the situation.
He has not publicly given his take thereafter.
Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president and three-time former MP Simranjit Singh Mann, who was considered the contrarian on earlier occasions, is supporting Gargaj and has exchanged barbs with the taksal chief on his warnings.
Radical groups, for instance Dal Khalsa, have been urging to avert any clash, so that the solemnity of the occasion is not violated.
Dissenting Akali leaders, who have not been leaving any chance to take a dig at Sukhbir and had earlier protested against the unceremonious sacking of jathedars of three takhts, have been staying silent. Scores of Sikh netizens have expressed concern about the mounting tension, and the common refrain is that a clash should not take place. As the stakes are high on either side, another round of narrative war is also expected.

Tension at Durgadi Fort as rival Shiv Sena factions clash during Id-ul-Azha prayers
Tensions escalated in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday (June 7, 2025) after members of both the Eknath Shinde-led and Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led factions of the Shiv Sena attempted to reach Durgadi Fort while Id-ul-Azha prayers were being offered at its foothill. According to police officials, protestors from both factions tried to ascend to the Durga temple atop the hill during the course of the Id-ul-Azha prayers being held at the base, resulting in chaos in the area. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were in effect, and several protestors were subsequently detained for violating the restrictions. Leaders from both sides, including Shinde faction functionary Ravi Patil and Uddhav faction leader Vijay Salvi, led rallies demanding that 'Durgadi Fort should be freed'. Their convoys converged at Shivaji Chowk, near the Durgadi temple, where slogans were raised by supporters of both groups. 'Police took measures to prevent protestors from both factions from reaching the fort. The protestors attempted to breach the barricades, triggering scuffles and a standoff with the police. We detained several members in preventive custody so that it does not escalate,' Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Zende said. Durgadi Fort has long been at the centre of a communal dispute regarding the control of a mosque located within its premises. Access to the Durga temple is typically restricted during Id-ul-Azha to facilitate prayers at the foothill. Members of the Shiv Sena have criticised the arrangement, alleging discrimination against Hindu devotees and calling for equal access to the site. The Idgah located at the fort has been under litigation since 1976, when the Majlish-e-Mushavreen Majjid Trust filed a suit seeking control. In 2024, the court ruled in favour of the State government.

"They are dragging Pahalgam attack, Prayagraj stampede into Bengaluru stampede": Kumaraswamy accuses Karnataka govt of diversionary tactics
Mandya (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Saturday demanded clarity from the Karnataka government regarding its investigation into the stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He also accused the Congress-led government of 'dragging in' the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the Prayagraj stampede to deflect criticism over its own failures. 'The government is making decisions every hour on the stampede issue. What will they do in the end? First, there was a judicial investigation. Now there is a CID investigation. Finally, they will get the investigation report. What is this government doing? If any decision is made, there should be clarity,' Kumaraswamy told reporters. 'The government is a complete are dragging Pahalgam and Prayagraj here for the mistakes they made. What is the connection between the Pahalgam incident and this?' he added. Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations from their posts, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. As per ESPNCricinfo, the resignation has been submitted to the president of the board, Raghuram Bhat. Also in Bengaluru, CID officials paid a visit to KSCA office, with the state government having ordered a CID probe into the stampede case. The stampede left 11 people dead and several others injured. Communicating to KSCA on Friday night, both Shankar and Jairam wrote as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, 'Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the KSCA.' The Bengaluru Police also filed a first information report (FIR) against the popular IPL franchise on Thursday. The police have said that RCB was not given permission to conduct the event at the stadium. RCB has been listed as the first accused in the FIR, along with DNA Entertainment, the franchise's event partners, and the KSCA, which is in control of the stadium. On Friday, the cops also confirmed the arrest of RCB's marketing and revenue head Nikhil Sosale, while acting on directives of newly appointed police commissioner SK Singh, who took over after his predecessor was removed by the chief minister Siddaramaiah after the incident.
