'Janaki vs State of Kerala': Kerala film bodies protest against censor board's move
The release of the Malayalam movie Janaki vs State of Kerala starring Union Minister and superstar Suresh Gopi has been stalled following a demand from the censor board for a name change. As per the film's makers, the board asked them to change the name Janaki, saying it also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita.
The film tells the story of a woman who faced assault and took a legal fight against the state. The board reportedly said that god's name should not be given to a woman who was assaulted. The film's release was scheduled for June 20. Union Minister Suresh Gopi is yet to react to the controversy.
The regional office of CBFC in Thiruvananthapuram had cleared the film with a U/A certificate. The film was later forwarded to the CBFC headquarters in Mumbai, where officials demanded a change in the title. If the film's title is changed, many dialogues in the film mentioning the name will also need to be changed.
B Unnikrishnan, president of FEFKA, told the media, "It needs to be opposed not only by the artistes but everybody who is committed to the cause of the country's diversity, dedicated to the country's art and culture ... I think Suresh Gopi should learn from this experience of his own. Suresh Gopi is now not only a film actor but also a minister here, and he should understand how his government is dealing with the cinema, with the culture, with the poetry, with all creativity."
Binoy Viswam, CPI state secretary, said, "This protest was triggered by the recent incident of CBFC asking to remove Janaki from the title of the film. They have also demanded that the protagonist's name should be changed from Janaki to something else..."
Producers of Janaki Vs State of Kerala starring Union Minister Suresh Gopi and directed by Pravin Narayanan have approached the Kerala High Court regarding the alleged unofficial directive from the CBFC.
However, Unnikrishnan said the film, according to its director, does not contain any specific religious reference or allusions."
The FEFKA general secretary also expressed disappointment with the alleged "random takes" on films from the last couple of years. He said that they are ready to address and discuss such a problem with the authorities and the government.

India, Pakistan exchange list of prisoners, fishermen in each other's custody
India and Pakistan on Tuesday exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody. The exchange took place through diplomatic channels simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad. Under the provisions of the Bilateral Agreement on Consular Access 2008, such lists are exchanged every year on January 1 and July 1. Pakistan has been requested to ensure the "safety, security and welfare" of all civilian prisoners and fishermen, pending their release and repatriation to India, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. "India has shared the names of 382 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, who are Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani. Similarly, Pakistan has shared the names of 53 civilian prisoners and 193 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or believed-to-be-Indian," it said. The Government of India has called for the "early release and repatriation" of civilian prisoners and fishermen currently in Pakistani custody, especially those who have already completed their prison sentences. "Pakistan has been asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 159 Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners, who have completed their sentence," the MEA said. In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to 26 civilian prisoners and fishermen in Pakistan's custody who have not been provided consular access so far. India has also requested Pakistan to confirm the nationality of 80 believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners and fishermen currently in India's custody, as their repatriation was pending due to a lack of nationality verification from Pakistani authorities. The MEA's statement further highlighted that sustained diplomatic efforts have resulted in the repatriation of 2,661 Indian fishermen and 71 civilian prisoners from Pakistan since 2014, which includes 500 fishermen and 13 civilian prisoners repatriated since 2023.

X, India spar over lawyer's 'Tom, Dick, and Harry' remark for government officials
A lawyer for Elon Musk's X told an Indian court on Tuesday that every "Tom, Dick, and Harry" government official had been authorised to issue content takedown orders, drawing a sharp rebuke from New Delhi's counsel in the latest clash over content moderation. X has long been at loggerheads with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government over content removal requests. The remarks were made during a hearing on the U.S. firm's challenge to a government-run website it says is a "censorship portal" that allows officials to issue content removal orders. New Delhi says the website is only to swiftly notify companies of their due diligence obligations. India is a critical growth market for X owner Musk, who is getting closer to launching his other key ventures Starlink and Tesla in the country. During the court hearing, X's lawyer, K. G. Raghavan, said it recently received a notice from the railways department to remove a video in which a car was being driven on a railway track. That was news, but the government found it unlawful, he told the court. "This is the danger, My Lord, that is done now, if every Tom, Dick, and Harry officer is authorised," Raghavan told the high court in the southern state of Karnataka. The phrase drew immediate condemnation from India's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who said "officers are not Tom, Dick, or Harry ... they are statutory functionaries". "No social media intermediary can expect completely unregulated functioning," Mehta said. India's IT ministry and X did not respond to Reuters queries. In 2021, X, formerly called Twitter, was locked in a stand-off with the Indian government over non-compliance with legal orders to block certain tweets. It later complied, but is still locked in a court fight related to the move.
