William Sitwell reviews Starling, Esher: ‘A spick and span menu that's a pleasure to navigate'
Turned out his name was Christopher Starling and when he wasn't tweeting he wrote, endlessly and left-handed, his wrist arching awkwardly over the page as the words came out feverishly, almost machine-like, buzzing and whirring across the paper. He's now called Boris and is a prolific author. Then there's a restaurant in Esher, a new and rather wonderful Starling.
This one has popped up at the end of Esher high street. The traffic swells and surges down the main thoroughfare of the drab

in 2023. Indeed his menu features a couple of 'as seen on TV' dishes. Among the starters is 'A Moon Shaped Pool', and 'Balloon Girl' is one of three desserts. These clunky names typify the plates served on the programme, needing a heavy tome of explanation and looking inedible, so I ducked them as I do the TV when I hear that plodding, swamp-like music.
Otherwise the menu is spick and span and a pleasure to navigate. Its spirit matches the decor, a nicely conventional layout of open kitchen, with a bar offering two seats for walk-ins, and some 40 covers with sensible padded chairs, a sweeping, dark blue banquette and, along one wall, a long, panelled mural of birds above the clouds.
Starlings, I suppose, mid-migrate.

This was a wonderful start and the joy soothed my pal Simon who was telling me about the photography studio on wheels he had commissioned. 'Oh, like a shepherd's hut,' I said. 'It is not a shepherd's hut. It's a photographer's studio,' he said. 'But it looks like a shepherd's hut,' I said. 'No, it doesn't,' he replied. 'It looks like a photographer's studio.'
My starter of pig's head was crisp and delicious but nothing to his quite glorious, rich and tasty pressed game. I decree that all terrines be like this – a celebration of rich, seasonal game and not one bit like dog food, which they so often are.
Mains were equally fab: on-point cooked pork and quite the most perfect piece of cod. Puds were a conventional and excellent crème brûlée, and chocolate ice cream covered in hazelnuts and tempered with a drizzle of olive oil.
For a fine bite and great service in Surrey, Starling is your nicely feathered nest.

Furious MasterChef fans ‘switch off' new series after BBC's decision to air despite John Torode & Gregg Wallace axings

The BBC cooking programme has been hit by a wave of controversy in the weeks leading up to the new series. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 3 MasterChef has returned to screens - but fans aren't happy with the decision Credit: BBC 3 Longtime presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace were recently axed after 20 years Credit: BBC 3 Viewers have declared they will "not watch" the programme Credit: BBC Long-time presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode were both axed from presenting future series. A report revealed more than 40 historic complaints against Gregg had been upheld, along with a claim that John once used a racist term. The Beeb has decided to go ahead with airing the new season of MasterChef, which features Gregg and John as hosts, because it was recorded before the report was commissioned. Writing online, viewers have hit back at this decision and said they will 'not watch' the programme. One wrote on X: "@BBCOne MasterChef should definitely NOT have gone ahead with Wallace and Torode as presenters. "The decision is demeaning and insulting to all those affected by what they did and drags the programme to the gutter. We will not watch it!" Another penned: "Just a reminder not to watch #masterchef tonight. #r4today." A third remarked: "I hope no one watches #MasterChef #BBC." While a fourth chimed in: "How is this allowed to air on Prime-time BBC One? "This just proves the BBC do not care about anything their staff do under their employment." MasterChef returns with Gregg Wallace and John Torode - but fans spot HUGE changes to show The Sun told how Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt is set to be MasterChef's new host. In addition, The Sun understood he could be joined by fellow Beeb chef Andi Oliver, 62, who presents Great British Menu. A spokesperson for the broadcaster said previously: "After careful consideration and consultation with the contestants, we have decided to broadcast the amateur series of MasterChef on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 6 August. "MasterChef is an amazing competition which is life-changing for the amateur chefs taking part. "The focus of it has always been their skill and their journey. 'This has not been an easy decision in the circumstances and we appreciate not everyone will agree with it. "In showing the series, which was filmed last year, it in no way diminishes our view of the seriousness of the upheld findings against both presenters. "We have been very clear on the standards of behaviour that we expect of those who work at the BBC or on shows made for the BBC. 'However, we believe that broadcasting this series is the right thing to do for these cooks who have given so much to the process. "We want them to be properly recognised and give the audience the choice to watch the series. 'At this stage we have not taken a decision on the celebrity series and Christmas special, which was filmed earlier this year, and we will confirm our plans later in the year. Great British Menu's Andi Oliver admits she 'wanted to kill' BBC star and 'would do time'
Great British Menu's Andi Oliver admits she 'wanted to kill' BBC star and 'would do time' Andi Oliver has recently opened up about her daughter Miquita's early career in broadcasting as she revealed she "wanted to kill" one BBC star over comments allegedly made about her daughter Andi Oliver has shared her true feelings towards Chris Moyles (Image:for Andi Oliver) Great British Menu star Andi Oliver has spoken out in support of her daughter Miquita over comments that radio host Chris Moyles allegedly made about her when she was 16-years-old. In a wide ranging interview, the TV personality reflected on the challenges and difficulties her daughter faced while she was making a name for herself in showbiz in the late 1990s and early 2000s. During her recent chat with the I newspaper, the TV star opened up about one specific incident involving radio host Chris Moyles, recalling: "Miquita was 16 and he had a phone-in on his show of: 'Would you shag her?' On Radio One. This would have been around 2000. I wanted to kill him. I still kind of do." As she grew increasingly angry, she added: "There aren't many people I loathe who I've never met, but I'd do time for that man." She began hosting the Great British Menu in 2017 (Image: Getty Images) Andi had originally raised Miquita alone, but has been with her partner Garfield Hackett since her daughter was 10-years-old, with the couple then sharing parenting duties. Miquita was just 16-years-old that she rose to fame while hosting the former Channel 4 show Popworld. Hosting the show alongside Simon Amstell until 2006, the show saw the pair interview a range of contemporary artists as well as hosting live performances and chatting about the latest celebrity gossip. Miquita was just a teenager when she began hosting the Channel 4 (Image: Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty I) After initially finding fame as a teenager, it is probably for her Miss Me? podcast on BBC Sounds alongside her childhood friend, Lily Allen that Miquita is best known. While radio host Chris Moyles has become one of the most recognisable voices in broadcasting in recent decades, his time at BBC Radio 1 came back in 1997 when he started hosting the early breakfast show. While he later went on to appear in various other slots on the station, it was in 2004 that he was given his own breakfast show, where he stayed in the role until 2012. He has also made a number of TV appearances down the years with presenting roles on the likes of Big Brother's Big Mouth and Chris Moyles' Quiz Night. Meanwhile, in 2022 he became the sixth contestant to be voted out of I'm a Me Out of Here! Chris Moyles has been approached for comment.
