Man, son electrocuted in Cachar dist after touching live wire

Time of India06-06-2025
Silchar: A 38-year-old man and his four-year-old son were electrocuted on Friday morning in the Silcoorie-Dharmakhal area of Cachar district, allegedly due to the gross negligence of the power department.
Pawan Kumar Malah and his son Viki came in contact with a live wire that had been hanging dangerously in front of their home.
According to witnesses, the wire had reportedly snapped from an electric pole days ago and remained unattended despite repeated complaints from local residents.
"We had informed the electricity office several times about the hanging wire, but they only gave assurances and never came to fix it," said neighbour Bijoy Kumar Malah.
"Today, I heard screams and rushed out. I used a bamboo stick to separate them from the wire, but it was too late. They died in the ambulance while being taken to the hospital."
Pawan's wife, who tried to rescue her husband and son, also suffered injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
The bodies have been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) for autopsy. The incident has sparked outrage in the locality, with residents demanding accountability and immediate action against the officials responsible.
Local sources claim that this is not the first time complaints against the power department have gone unaddressed in the area. The deaths have intensified calls for an independent inquiry and compensation for the bereaved family.

‘Curb disabled parking misuse at Vasco'

Vasco: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has requested the Vasco traffic cell to take action against the misuse of disabled parking spaces. 'MMC has made provision for disabled parking spaces, which will begin soon at four locations near the municipal building,' said MMC chairperson Girish Borkar. Borkar was commenting on a private vehicle illegally occupying a disabled parking spot near Vasco court. He said the south side of the municipal building has parking spaces for people with physical disabilities. 'Vasco traffic cell should take care of the parking spaces. Justice should be served to the Velsao resident frustrated by unauthorised parking in front of the Vasco court. Disabled persons have the right to a dedicated parking space and therefore the traffic cell should come out with a strategic plan for them,' said Borkar. He said the traffic cell should strictly curb unauthorised parking to improve discipline among motorists. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 35-year-old man arrested for making hoax bomb threat call in Mumbai

Mumbai: The city police on Friday arrested a 35-year-old man from Vakola for allegedly making a threat phone call to the police control room saying there will be bomb blasts in the city. The control room has received the call from an unidentified caller on Thursday afternoon. The technical investigation led the investigators to Vakola in the western suburbs where they nabbed the accused, Suraj Dharma Jadhav (35) for allegedly making the threat call. Police sources said that Jadhav has made similar threat calls in the past too. The city police last year received around 50 threat calls which later turned out to be hoax. Many callers had made the calls under the influence of alcohol or for revenge.
