Comelec affirms dismissal of DQ petition vs. Erwin Tulfo
In a seven-page resolution dated June 5, 2025, the poll body said the motion for reconsideration filed by Toto Bunyog Causing and Graft-free Philippines Foundation Inc. was rejected for having no merit.
'The Commission En Banc finds it unnecessary to discuss the same, considering that no merit has been found in any of the arguments raised in this Motion for Reconsideration,' the resolution read.
Among the reasons the petitioners cited in Tulfo's disqualification case are his US citizenship and violation of the equal access to opportunities for public service.
Comelec reiterated that 'lack of Philippine citizenship, violation of the equal access clause and the political dynasty prohibition, and failure to meet academic qualifications are not grounds for disqualification.'
On May 23, the Comelec junked Tulfo's disqualification case over petitioners' failure to observe certain requirements.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos confident US will defend PH territory
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed his confidence that the United States will defend the Philippines should it face security challenges, particularly in the West Philippine Sea. Speaking to Indian news media 'Firstpost,' Marcos was asked if he is convinced that the US would come to the Philippines' defense should it face a security challenge in the region. 'I am, because the assurance is that we have been receiving in those terms from the new [US] administration before I went there, and when I went there,' Marcos replied in reference to his recent official visit to Washington, D.C. last July where he met US President Donald Trump and senior defense officials. Marcos also cited the Trump administration's 'ironclad commitment' to the Philippines amid the 'dangerous' Chinese actions in the South China Sea. 'I believe that remains constant, and I'm not surprised because we really have had a very, very long history together with the US,' the President said. 'It has been a very long and very good relationship, and I think it will remain so. I'm sure it will remain so,' he added. In July, Manila reiterated its call for China to comply with the nine-year-old arbitration ruling that nullified Beijing's claims in the South China Sea. Marcos is currently in India on a five-day state visit. Meanwhile, Marcos said the world will have to readjust to the new US tariff rates. 'That's where it stands right now, and it is just something that we will have to adjust to and the effects on our economies are all about the same,' he surmised. 'The entire world economy is going to have to readjust itself. He reinvents himself in many ways,' he added. According to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the new US tariff rates are unlikely to change. Trump had announced a new 19% tariff rate for goods from the Philippines after he and Marcos had a meeting during the Philippine President's US visit. When asked for advice how to negotiate with the US, Marcos answered, 'Just do your best' and be 'smart about it.' 'We now need to be agile, our economies need to be agile. We need to be able to adjust very quickly,' the President said. 'That's how we are structuring our economy: strong, robust, but agile, and it seems to be the most important quality right now,' he added. — RF, GMA Integrated News

Hontiveros names instances when SC overturned its rulings
Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday named two instances when the Supreme Court (SC) overturned its rulings as senators debated on whether to abide by the high court's decision that declared unconstitutional the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte. 'The SC has reversed a unanimous decision in a lot of instances before,' Hontiveros said. One of these was the case of the League of Cities of the Philippines vs. the Commission on Elections (Comelec), where the SC En Banc granted a motion for reconsideration and declared 16 Cityhood Laws as constitutional in 2010. In 2008, the SC initially declared unconstitutional the creation of 16 new cities and ordered the Comelec against the holding of a plebiscite pursuant to cityhood laws in these municipalities. The SC in December 2009 reversed the 2008 decision and ruled that the towns can be declared as cities. However, in 2010, it made a second reversal and reinstated its 2008 decision. In its ruling in February 2011, the SC denied with finality that the 16 towns can be declared as cities. Hontiveros also mentioned the case of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications Inc. and others vs. Greenpeace Southeast Asia of the Philippines. 'Original decision, unanimous, December 8, 2015. Reversed unanimously on MR too, July 26, 2016,' Hontiveros said. 'Hindi lang po tulad nung sinabi ni minority leader na there's always a first time. It has happened before. So 'yung ganitong klaseng milagro na hinahanap, posibleng mangyari din po dito sa kasong pinag uusapan natin,' she added. (It's not just like what the minority leader said, that there's always a first time. It has happened before. So this kind of miracle being sought is also possible in the case we are discussing.) This came after Senator Rodante Marcoleta questioned whether even Supreme Court justice would overturn the ruling, considering that it was unanimous. The SC had ruled unanimously that the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte are barred by the one-year rule under Article XI, Section 3(5) of the Constitution. Meanwhile, with 19 votes, the Senate voted to transfer to the archives the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos to Indian businesses: PH investment environment most open, liberal

Pabalate/ PPA Pool) President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday wooed Indian business leaders to invest in the Philippines, saying that the country is committed to support current and prospective Indian investors. At a roundtable meeting in New Delhi, Marcos said the Philippines' ''investment environment is the most open and liberal that it has ever been.'' ''Our discussions today have demonstrated the strength of our strategic partnership, especially in trade and investment. They certainly show how far we have come and how much more we can achieve if we continue to work together in a spirit of cooperation and shared prosperity,'' Marcos said. ''The Philippines and India are natural economic partners. We are two of Asia's fastest-growing economies. We are powered by a youthful, skilled population. Moreover, we are both committed to building resilient, innovation-driven economies that deliver opportunities for our peoples,'' he added. Marcos said he directed the Department of Trade and Industry to work closely with their Indian counterparts to convene the joint working group on trade and investment at the earliest opportunity. ''And we have just again with the discussion we were having, is to decide, is that we will, not only are we going to organize a joint working group on trade and investment, but we will also probably granulate that down to industry specific working groups so that they you are—you're talking apples to apples, oranges to oranges,'' he said. ''And of course, the government will be there to take notes and to understand what is needed by both sides to make all of these things happen,'' Marcos added. He also tasked the DTI to lead Philippine efforts towards a Philippine-India Preferential Trade Agreement, which will lay a strong foundation for deeper, more predictable and mutually beneficial economic integration. — BM, GMA Integrated News
