First Look At Harry Potter As HBO Series Begins Filming
The producers at HBO's Harry Potter TV series solemnly swear that they are up to no good as they officially begin production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom. This comes almost exactly 14 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 graced the big screen to wrap up Harry's (Daniel Radcliffe, Swiss Army Man ) seven-book, eight-film journey. Fans of the popular series by J. K. Rowling have been rejoicing at the first look at Dominic McLaughlin's ( Grow ) Harry Potter, dressed in his Hogwarts robes with his signature messy black hair and round glasses slightly askew. Already, the accuracy of McLaughlin's wardrobe is a plus point for fans, as it remains faithful to the source material of Potter's appearance.
Joining him on the cast are Arabella Stanton ( Matilda the Musical stage production) as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The young trio were cast from a pool of more than 30,000 actors who auditioned last fall.
Meanwhile, other key staff members of Hogwarts have been cast, with John Lithgow ( Conclave, The Crown ) having been cast as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer ( Tumbleweeds, The White Queen ) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu ( I May Destroy You, Gangs of London ) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost ( Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz ) as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon ( The Favourite ) as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse ( Alice in Wonderland ) as Argus Filch.
The rest of the cast includes Katherine Parkinson ( Humans ) as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn ( The Outfit ) as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, and Bertie Carvel ( The Crown ) as Cornelius Fudge. An exclusive report by Variety has also indicated that Bel Powley ( A Small Light ) and Daniel Rigby ( Eric and Ernie ) will play Petunia and Vernon Dursley, respectively. New casting announced on Monday has also revealed Rory Wilmot ( FBI: International ) as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey ( Sherlock ) as Madam Rolanda Hooch and Anton Lesser ( Game of Thrones ) as Garrick Ollivander.
Spearheaded by showrunner Francesca Gardiner ( His Dark Materials ) and director Mark Mylod ( Succession ), HBO's new take on the beloved book series will follow the young Potter as he discovers his magic lineage and embarks on a journey to discover himself and the wonderful world of wizardry. Along the way, he befriends Weasley and Granger, and together they aid him in his journey to defeat the infamous Dark Wizard, Lord Voldemort.
Each of the seven Harry Potter books will constitute an entire season. According to Variety, shooting for Season 1 is expected to continue until the spring of 2026, with Season 2 going into production after a brief hiatus.

'Superman' Retains No.1 Box Office Spot, Soars Past US$400 Million Globally
Love it or hate it, James Gunn's Superman continues to fly high. After opening to US$217 million at the global box office, the superhero tentpole has retained its top spot for the second week running, with a worldwide haul surpassing US$400 million. The David Corenswet-led pic raked in US$57.3 million from the domestic market, marking a less-than-expected 54 percent decline over 10 days — the same drop registered by 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine . Across the globe, it collected US$45.2 million, bringing its total tally to US$406 million, which puts it behind F1: The Movie 's US$460 million. It's much-needed encouragement for DC Studios and its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, as the current earnings for Superman have already surpassed the entire lifetime run of Marvel's Thunderbolts* (US$383 million). That's not to say one is better than the other, but the latest superhero retelling comes with high stakes and expectations as the launchpad to Chapter One of the rebooted cinematic universe. As of the time of writing, the film is also one step closer to overtaking Marvel's other 2025 entry, Captain America: Brave New World (US$415 million). The rest of the box office competition is being left in the dust, too. Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer came in third with US$24.6 million worldwide, while Paramount's Smurfs opened in fourth place with US$36 million worldwide. In second place is Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth , which now stands at US$647 million globally, and contributed to Scarlett Johansson's rise to the top of the list of highest-grossing lead actors before inflation adjustment. Moving into its third week, Superman is expected to face stiff competition from Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps . The comic book adventure hits theatres on 25 July and is projected to debut with US$100 million to US$110 million domestically. Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, the latter introduces Reed Richards aka Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal, The Last of Us ), Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby, The Crown ), Johnny Storm aka Human Torch (Joseph Quinn, Stranger Things 4 ) and Ben Grimm aka The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, The Bear ) as they face their most daunting challenge yet – new family and new beginnings. As for Superman , Corenswet is joined by Rachel Brosnahan ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel , House of Cards ) and Nicholas Hoult ( X-Men: First Class ) in the lead cast as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively. It serves as the lead-up to two interconnected spin-offs scheduled for 2026, Supergirl and Clayface , alongside a Wonder Woman movie in the works. James Gunn Grateful For Enthusiastic Response To 'Superman', Is Happy Film's Message Resonates
With a strong opening of US$217 million at the global box office, Superman director James Gunn has expressed his immense gratitude for the fans' response to the film. Superman (2025) debuted with the biggest box office opening in the titular character's solo film history, earning a domestic opening of US$122 million, surpassing Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (2013), which launched with US$116.7 million. David Corenswet as Superman in Superman (2025) Its strong domestic opening marks the biggest superhero movie opening weekend since the release of the massively successful Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which garnered a whopping US$211 million domestically. This means that Superman has beaten out four other films in the superhero genre that have been released since last summer's Deadpool & Wolverine . These comprise Venom: The Last Dance (2024), with a domestic opening of US$51 million, Kraven the Hunter (2024), with a paltry domestic opening of US$11 million, Captain America: Brave New World (2025), with a domestic opening of US$89 million, and Thunderbolts* (2025), with a domestic opening of US$76 million. With the commercial success that Superman is currently enjoying, Gunn has released a statement on social media to express his gratitude for the film's response. 'I'm incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days. We've had a lot of 'Super' in Superman over the years, and I'm happy to have made a movie that focuses on the 'man' part of the equation – a kind of person always looking out for those in need,' he said. 'That resonates so powerfully with so many people across the world is in itself a hopeful testament to the kindness and quality of human beings. Thank you.' David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and James Gunn on the set of Superman (2025) Superman's impressive debut has also appeared to satisfy DC Studios' parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, with CEO David Zaslav issuing a statement this weekend to celebrate the studio's big win. In a statement to Deadline, Zaslav remarked, 'This weekend, we watched Superman soar as James Gunn's passion and vision came to life on the big screen. Superman is just the first step. Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theatres and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold ten-year plan. The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead.' For the time being, it appears that Gunn's Superman is on track to achieve what Gunn had sought to do, though only time will tell if the film continues to perform well as it enters its second weekend. In the meantime, fans can and should check out Superman now in theatres to form their own opinions, in addition to checking out our Superman review and analysis of the ending and post-credits scenes.
