Case Against Army Officer And SpiceJet Staffer He Assaulted Over Luggage
New Delhi: A violent clash at the Srinagar airport has led to a police case being filed against an Army officer and a SpiceJet staffer he is accused of assaulting over a dispute concerning excess cabin luggage. The incident, which occurred on July 26, during the boarding of SpiceJet flight SG-386 bound for Delhi, resulted in serious injuries to four SpiceJet employees, including a spinal fracture and severe jaw injuries. According to a statement released by SpiceJet, the incident began when the Army officer, identified as Ritesh Kumar Singh, attempted to board the Delhi-bound flight with two pieces of cabin luggage weighing a total of 16 kilograms. Under Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regulations, cabin luggage exceeding 7 kilograms incurs additional charges for domestic flights. When informed of the excess weight and the associated fee, the officer reportedly refused to comply and attempted to forcibly enter the aerobridge without completing the mandatory boarding process, breaching aviation security protocols. A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official, responsible for airport security, escorted the officer back to the boarding gate. It was at this point, SpiceJet alleges, that the situation escalated. The officer became increasingly aggressive, launching a physical assault on four members of the airline's ground staff. The attack involved punches, repeated kicks, and the use of a queue stand as a weapon. According to the airline, one staff member suffered a spinal fracture, while another sustained serious jaw injuries, including bleeding from the nose and mouth, after receiving a forceful kick to the face while attempting to assist a colleague. The Army has taken note of the matter and is supporting the civil investigation, a source within the Army said.

Union cabinet secy challenges 7-year-old CAT orders, contempt notices in IFS officer Sanjeev Chaturvedi case
Dehradun: The Union cabinet secretary has approached Uttarakhand high court to seek the quashing of a seven-year-old Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order involving IFS officer Sanjeev Chaturvedi, and to challenge contempt notices issued by CAT. The notices, issued on May 21, 2025, pertained to non-compliance by cabinet secretary TV Somanathan with earlier CAT directions asking him, along with health secretary and central vigilance commission secretary, to submit documents related to the closure of some high-profile corruption cases, which were being investigated by Chaturvedi as chief vigilance officer in AIIMS-Delhi. The petition also sought to nullify CAT's Feb 23, 2023 orders, non-compliance of which gave rise to the contempt petition. The chief justice's bench listed the next hearing for Aug 28. The matter relates to the downgrading of the annual performance appraisal report (APAR) of Chaturvedi for 2015–16, during his central deputation at AIIMS-Delhi from June 2012 to June 2016. CAT had, on Apr 16, 2018, dismissed an application filed by the then cabinet secretary, observing, "Since the officer's central deputation was approved by the cabinet secretary, and that most of his prayers are also directed against cabinet secretary, he is a "necessary party to the proceedings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? It seeks the removal of the cabinet secretary from the list of respondents in the original CAT matter, praying that the name of DoPT secretary be added instead in the pending tribunal case. Chaturvedi had approached the Nainital circuit bench of CAT in July 2017 after his APAR was downgraded, and in Sept 2017, the tribunal stayed the downgrading order. In 2019, he had filed an application seeking documents regarding closure of several major corruption cases, an investigation he had initiated during his tenure as chief vigilance officer (CVO) at AIIMS, from June 2012 to Aug 2014, alleging that the downgrade was in retaliation for his anti-corruption investigations. During that period, Chaturvedi had handled nearly 200 corruption cases involving senior bureaucrats and doctors, including disciplinary action in 78 matters and charges in 87, with over 20 of those cases referred to CBI, prompting CAT to issue orders in February and March 2023 asking the cabinet secretary, health secretary, CVC and AIIMS Delhi to furnish relevant documents. When the officials failed to comply, Chaturvedi filed a contempt petition in Dec 2024, leading CAT in May 2025 to issue contempt notices to Somanathan, then health secretary Apurva Chandra and then CVC secretary P Daniel. Meanwhile, Chaturvedi's legal battle has seen unusual judicial churn. As of June 2025, a total of 14 judges have recused themselves from hearing matters related to him, the latest being ACJM Neha Kushwaha, who stepped away from a criminal defamation case Chaturvedi filed against CAT judge Manish Garg, citing personal proximity to another tribunal judge. The contempt notices followed a high court clarification in May 2024 that a previous stay did not apply to these top officials, thereby making them liable to comply with CAT's directives. Congress flags concern over women's safety in BJP states, seeks fast-track courts to deal with cases
Lamba also pointed out that during the Assembly session in Madhya Pradesh, Congress MLA Arif Masood asked how many SC-ST women were raped in the state from 2022 to 2024, and the answer was 7,418. "A girl from Odisha died. Earlier, a girl studying in Fakir Mohan College alleged sexual harassment but did not get justice. She set herself on fire. That girl died in Bhubaneswar and now a 15-year-old girl has died in AIIMS Delhi," Lamba said. In the name of religion in Chhattisgarh, "police arrested our sisters associated with Christian missionaries," she said. "Today, we are once again ashamed. In Ahmedabad, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a shameful poster has been put up by the traffic police, which states that daughters in Gujarat should not go out of their homes. If they go out and go to a party at night, they can be raped," the Congress leader said, as she showed a photograph of the poster. "Now I come to the case of Karnataka. Prajwal Revanna from Hassan has been convicted of rape. You know that Prajwal Revanna is a mass rapist... Prime Minister Narendra Modi had campaigned for him and sought votes," Lamba said. "But today I feel proud to tell you that Rahul Gandhi ji took this issue seriously, and told the Congress government in Karnataka not to come under any pressure because Prajwal Ravanna has the support of two prime ministers... one former and the current. Revanna has now been sentenced to life imprisonment," she added. Women's safety remains a serious issue in the country and that is why Mahila Congress will continue its 'Nyay March', Lamba said. "Police are trying to crush the demand for justice but we are not going to stop. Mahila Congress has decided to ensure justice for the victims and punishment for the culprits. Our demands are -- victims' families must be given security and proper compensation, and cases related to women's safety should be tried in fast-track courts and justice be given to the victims," she said.
