
Calgary's "Hail Alley" provides valuable data for hailstorm research

'It kind of runs from Drayton Valley, south towards the south side of Calgary towards that main hail corridor, especially if you are located on the northern side of the city,' she said.

Historically, Calgary experiences intense hail events every few years.

With the last few major events taking place in August of 2024 and 2022, Climenhaga said it is generally around this time of year when the dynamics of the weather play a role in creating intense storms.

'You need very strong updrafts inside of a thunderstorm, often a supercell thunderstorm will produce these larger hail stones,' Climenhaga said. 'You need enough moisture, a freezing level where that moisture has to be lifted, where those ice stones can form to really all line up to get big hailstorms.

'Calgary often does have that perfect setup, where you do have low enough freezing levels where you do get that moisture pushed up enough to really grow those hailstones.'

Simon Eng, research meteorologist for the Northern Hail Project run out of Western University in Ontario, said they've received reports of Sunday's storm hosted hailstones that ranged from 40 to 45 millimetres in size, alongside gusts of wind in the 90 km/h range.

'You had a lesser magnitude hail event yesterday, but other factors present that may have turned up the dial and increased the risk of some of these attendant hazards that are associated with severe thunderstorms,' Eng said.

There are three overall programs that the NHP uses to collect data over the summer.

First are teams based in Olds and Olds College throughout the summer, generally tasked with chasing storms wherever they occur around the province.

Second is their instrumented networks branch that use specialized weather stations and equipment for hail monitoring across Calgary and surrounding agricultural areas.

Banff gets double the average rainfall in July, Jasper receives normal amount
Although July was undeniably a wet month for Banff, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says it did not make the record book. Banff received 98.7 mm of precipitation in July, which is more than double the monthly average of 46.9 mm, but the record of 144.8 mm set in July of 1903 remains unbroken. 'Every summer is different, and this summer has been a wetter one for the foothills, primarily in southern Alberta, but up towards the Jasper area too,' said ECCC scientist Christy Climenhaga. 'We've had a number of events in the month of July that have really brought in quite a bit of rainfall to the region, some convection too, so it has been a wetter run through the month of July than maybe that we're used to in the past,' Climenhaga added. Jasper, meanwhile, was on the drier side, getting 49.5 mm in July. This is just below the norm of 52.2 mm. No records were broken for Jasper either, with the wettest July on record being in 1935 with 185.4 mm. 'So, yeah, not record breaking in either place,' Climenhaga said. 'It was closer to those records towards the Calgary region, but not so much into the parks.' There are hints that the rest of the summer will be wetter than normal for Banff, although Climenhaga cautioned that these kinds of forecasts can be tricky, noting that a month's worth of rain can get dropped with just one storm. 'We always put the caveat that they often don't hold up quite as well, but our models are pulling in for a slightly wetter trend for much of southern Alberta and into the foothills for the month of August,' Climenhaga said. 'That doesn't necessarily mean every day is going to be rainy, but when all is said and done, there is that better chance of wetter than normal conditions for the region.' As for Jasper, June was on the drier side with only 30 mm of rain compared to 57.6 mm on average. 'Despite the rain in July, it could end up being a close to normal precipitation summer, or even if we don't get as much rain into Jasper this month, we could see a drier-than-normal summer, so it'll be something to watch,' Climenhaga said. She added how cooler, showering conditions will help lower the wildfire risk, but a hot, dry stretch can quickly change the situation. In Alberta's ‘Hailstorm Alley,' scientists-turned-storm-chasers look into the eye of the storm for answers
Nearly every summer now, residents of Alberta and the Prairies are confronted by a costly, extreme weather event that damages homes, dents cars and devastates crops: hail. But researchers from Western University's Canadian Severe Storms Laboratory are hoping to improve Canada's understanding of hailstorms by collecting data in central Alberta for their Northern Hail Project. 'Hailstorm Alley,' a region stretching from central to southern Alberta, experiences multiple hailstorms each year – storms that caused billions of dollars in damage in the record-setting seasons of 2020 and 2024. Since 2022, the region has been the summer home to Western students and scientists-turned-storm-chasers. It starts with studying the forecast. When cumulonimbus clouds – towering clouds that from the ground look dense and ominous – take shape, research team members pile into cars in search of hail. From the passenger seat, one person tracks the storm's movement on radar, while another navigates the criss-crossing Prairie roads to position the team safely behind the hail swath, which is the storm's footprint. Often, there's a third researcher observing the hail stones from the back seat. This summer's team has completed 19 'missions' so far. Storm-chasing requires focus but is an exciting job, said project field co-ordinator Jack Hamilton in a recent interview. 'There are a lot of highs and lows,' Mr. Hamilton said. 'We sometimes miss out on the storm that we want to be on. Sometimes we get surprised by the hail size or the intensity of the storm.' Every storm is different, making the hail events exciting for students but difficult for meteorologists. Current modelling isn't great at predicting the degree of property damage or the risk of injury posed by individual hail events. 'One of the things we're doing is looking at creating a hail climatology for Canada,' the project's director, Julian Brimelow, said. 'We don't really have anything reliable like that across Canada right now, which is a problem for municipalities and people wanting to assess risk.' Hail forms when moist air rises quickly to cooler heights inside of brewing storms. The foothills of Alberta and the Prairies in the summer form the perfect conditions for long-lived supercell thunderstorms. With powerful updrafts, these storms can produce both hail and tornadoes. As the atmosphere warms, its ability to hold moisture increases, creating the conditions for more frequent hailstorms, according to Mr. Brimelow, who has chased storms for three decades. 'We get a lot of ping-pong-ball to golf-ball-sized hail with the most severe storms,' Mr. Brimelow said. 'Summer on the Prairies will get baseball, even softball-sized hail in the right conditions, and those can be fatal to humans.' In Alberta, golf-ball-sized hail stones can reach speeds over 100 kilometres an hour before hitting the ground. The team has a running wager for whoever finds the summer's largest hail stone. Three years ago, as the project was being launched, that summer's cohort of researchers found Canada's largest hailstone on record, a whopping 12.3 centimetres in diameter and weighing almost 300 grams. The team measures the size of the hail swath, and individual hail stones, which they collect and preserve in refrigerated containers. Data collected by the team automatically uploads to their database, feeding models they hope will enable meteorologists to more accurately predict the impact of hailstorms. Much of current hail research is done by studying radar data and using other technology, as well as relying on community reports from weather events, rather than on-the-ground scientists who look for the truth at the centre of a storm, Mr. Brimelow said. 'Nothing beats ground truthing,' he said.

Possibility of funnel clouds in southwestern Manitoba

(Environment and Climate Change Canada) Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for southwestern Manitoba, warning that conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds throughout the day. A similar condition yesterday led to a few reports of funnel clouds in Saskatchewan and it appears to be more favourable for today, the agency said. 'These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,' the statement reads. 'This rotation is normally not a danger near the ground, but there is a chance it could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.' ECCC notes the landspout tornadoes usually do not cause significant damage but can still be dangerous - strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances. If conditions worsen, the agency says it will issue tornado watches or warnings as needed. Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if a warning is issued.
