Oklahoma QB John Mateer denies ever betting on sports
"I have never bet on sports," Mateer posted Tuesday on X.
Screenshots of his Venmo account surfaced Monday and showed "sports gambling" in the memo field for two transactions on Nov. 20, 2022, during his freshman season at Washington State.
Both transactions reportedly were made to one of his teammates' Venmo accounts.
The NCAA prohibits betting on any collegiate sports, with potential penalties ranging up to a loss of eligibility.
Mateer said the Venmo comments were "inside jokes between me and my friends."
"I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise," he posted. "I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling."
The Oklahoma athletic department denied any knowledge of an investigation regarding sports betting at the university.
"OU takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situations of concern," OU Athletics said in a statement Tuesday. "OU is unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending."
The statement said that Oklahoma educates its student-athletes, coaches and staff on issues around sports gambling and use ProhiBet, a service that provides comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities.
Mateer and the Sooners, ranked 18th in the first Associated Press Top 25 poll, are scheduled to start the season at home against Illinois State on Aug. 30.
Mateer transferred to Oklahoma from Washington State this past offseason. The redshirt junior passed for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 12 games for the Cougars in 2024.
The other quarterbacks on the Sooners' depth chart are sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr., Mercer transfer Whitt Newbauer and three-star freshman Jett Niu.

August 14 - If the Baltimore Orioles aren't going to produce much on offense, at least some timely hits can come in handy. They will look for a few more key clutch hits in the series finale against the visiting Seattle Mariners on Thursday afternoon. The Orioles didn't score in the first 15 innings of the series, but they pulled out a 4-3 victory on Wednesday thanks to Jackson Holliday's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. It was Baltimore's first walk-off victory of the season. "Just enjoy being a kid and playing baseball and it's a whole lot of fun," Holliday said. In the decisive game of the three-game series, Baltimore will try to extend its streak of series victories against Seattle to six. The Orioles have won only three of their past nine games, but uplifting results like Wednesday's can fuel excitement. "This game will beat you down," Holliday said. "Luckily, I have really great teammates to lean on. I don't think we've played the baseball that we would like to, but we have a great group of guys that pick each other up." While Baltimore's offensive woes are well-documented, the Mariners have been unusually quiet with the bats in the current series. They have a total of four runs and no homers. Manager Dan Wilson normally likes how the Mariners produce runs in a variety of ways -- with or without long balls. "We've talked about if you can do both, you're going to have a consistent offense," Wilson said. Catcher Cal Raleigh, the big-league leader with 45 homers, believes the Mariners have enough sources on offense. "That's what having a deep lineup does," said Raleigh, who is 0-for-8 in the series. Right-hander Logan Evans (6-4, 4.36 ERA) will start for the Mariners on Thursday, looking to extend a personal two-game winning streak. The rookie has three wins in his past four outings despite compiling a 5.85 ERA in that span. Evans will be opposing the Orioles for the first time. Baltimore's Thursday starter, Tomoyuki Sugano (9-5, 4.24 ERA), has won his past three decisions. The rookie right-hander didn't allow a home run in his past two starts, his longest such streak of the season. Sugano notched a June 3 victory at Seattle when he permitted one run on five hits in seven innings. The run came on a homer by Rowdy Tellez, who is no longer with the Mariners. Bullpen issues have been troubling the Orioles recently. Yennier Cano and Keegan Akin combined to allow two ninth-inning runs on Wednesday, blowing a 3-1 lead, but they were bailed out by the run in the bottom of the frame. "We've got to figure out how to get the ninth inning solved," Baltimore interim manager Tony Mansolino said. "It's a very unique inning and it changes emotions and feelings." Orioles left fielder Colton Cowser is eligible to be reinstated from the concussion list on Thursday, but he won't be activated for the game. "I don't see it being too long," Mansolino said. Or two: somewhere in these amber waves of grain and purple mountains of majesty, is a Texas fan who spent time investigating the rival team's quarterback, found his Venmo account, saw the alleged "inside jokes" and dumped them in the social media world of shoot first, aim second. And away we go. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question," Mateer wrote on X. "But were instead inside jokes between me and my friends." Which, of course, means absolutely nothing in the social media sewer of guilty until we say you aren't. We don't know if Mateer gambled on college games, and was twice dumb enough to pay off bets via Venmo with memo lines that read - I swear I'm not making this up - "sports gambling." We don't know, and frankly the NCAA will never know unless the benefactor of those two Venmo payments ("Richard Roaten") drops dime. Or maybe - and I'm just spitballing here - Mateer and his friends played a stupid joke as freshmen, and word eventually got out. Because if there is no there there, the exposure of it all is the story here. The Iron Bowl. The Egg Bowl. The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Welcome aboard, Red River Rivalry. To be fair to the SEC, this fun OU/Texas sideshow less than two weeks from the start of the season doesn't hold a candle to Harvey Updyke and "I got too much Bama in me." Or Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer refusing to attend SEC media days for fear of being served legal papers from a hoity-toity attorney who just happened to be a huge Alabama fan. The visual of media hovering around a speaker phone to hear Fulmer say he can't discuss legal proceedings gave new meaning to media days carnival. Or a fired Tennessee assistant coach faxing ball plays to Florida coach Ron Zook days before the annual rivalry game. Or Hugh Freeze's - ahem - exposed log of calls to "massage therapists." All of those wild and true stories originated and were exposed, in one form or another, from the rival school. Or in Updyke's case, from sheer stupidity. Which brings us all the way back to Mateer. You'd have to be pretty dumb to not only gamble on games, but pay off bets using one of the world's largest payment apps. With, you know, a memo explaining exactly what you did. Because when you're balancing your checkbook (Google it, kids), you need to know where that cash went. "I have never bet on sports," Mateer wrote on X. "I understand the seriousness of the matter but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling." There, that should do it. Especially considering the NCAA's ever-evolving stance on gambling, once the ultimate sin of amateur sports. That's sarcasm, everyone. Because now you can gamble on your phone inside stadiums during games. Heck, LSU and Caesar's Sportsbook signed a multiyear sponsorship agreement in 2021 for - again, I swear I'm not making this up - naming rights to the Caesar's Sportsbook Skyline Club at Tiger Stadium, and signage displayed throughout the stadium. The SEC just last year began distributing weekly injury reports for games because, you know, fans need the info. So yeah, if Mateer did gamble on games (allegedly), you better believe they're going to throw the book at him, baby. But have no fear, Netflix will turn it into a three-part series glorifying the unfairness of it all, so Mateer will at least recoup some of the lost wages. And somewhere above the fruited plain, from sea to shining sea, a Texas fan will get a 10-gallon belly laugh. Then take the Longhorns and lay the points in the Red River Rivalry. August 14 - By Field Level Media Logan O'Hoppe hit a go-ahead two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning, rallying the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif. The Angels completed their first-ever six-game Freeway Series sweep of their Southern California rivals. The Angels' only other season sweep vs. the Dodgers came when they went 4-0 in 2019. The Dodgers, who took their fourth straight loss, fell one game behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West. Los Angeles hadn't trailed in the division since April 27. With the bases loaded and the Dodgers up 5-4 in the eighth, O'Hoppe lined a 103.2 mph fastball from reliever Edgardo Henriquez into center field to drive in Christian Moore and Taylor Ward, who had walked against Justin Wrobleski (4-4). Tigers 1, White Sox 0 Troy Melton and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout and Wenceel Perez contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly to help Detroit defeat the host Chicago. White Sox pitching limited the Tigers to just five hits, but Detroit capitalized to earn a three-game series victory. Melton and fellow rookie right-hander Shane Smith of Chicago dueled for the first five innings. Smith allowed two hits and three walks with five strikeouts while throwing 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. Brewers 12, Pirates 5 William Contreras drove in four runs and Christian Yelich three more in host Milwaukee's win over Pittsburgh. It was the Brewers' 12th consecutive win, which is the second time in franchise history the team has won at least 12 in a row. Milwaukee has also won 27 of its last 31 games. Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff allowed four hits in four innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Bryan Reynolds homered twice and drove in all five runs for the Pirates, who lost their fifth straight. Starter Mitch Keller (5-11) took the loss, giving up six runs and eight hits in four innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Braves 11, Mets 6 Michael Harris II closed out a nine-run fourth inning by hitting a grand slam for visiting Atlanta, which stunned New York in the middle game of a three-game series. Busch added a sacrifice fly to help the Cubs gain a split of the first two games of the three-game series. Reds 8, Phillies 0 Hunter Greene returned from a two-month injury stint and tossed six shutout innings while Miguel Andujar stayed red-hot with a grand slam to lead Cincinnati past visiting Philadelphia. Greene, out since June 3 with a right groin strain, was dominant over the course of his 85-pitch effort, striking out six and walking none. The Reds put the game away with a four-run seventh on Andujar's third homer in four games, a third career grand slam to the seats in left off reliever Jordan Romano. Boston starter Walker Buehler (7-7) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks, with three strikeouts, over six innings. Rays 8, Athletics 2 Hot sluggers Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero each bashed a two-run homer and Drew Rasmussen pitched six strong innings to help Tampa Bay top the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif. Caminero had two hits, three RBIs and two runs in the series finale as the Rays took two of three from the A's. Rasmussen (10-5) allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits. Lawrence Butler homered for the A's. J.T. Ginn (2-5) threw 70 pitches while lasting just two innings. He gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits.
