The Pittsburgh Steelers are selecting Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson with the No. 83 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding to their running back core after losing Najee Harris to the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency, drafting Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson with the No. 83 overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Johnson, 21, immediately fills the void left by Harris. He stands at 6-foot-1, 224 pounds and fits perfectly into offensive coordinator Arthur Smith's offense.
In 2024, Johnson led the Big Ten with 1,279 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had 22 catches for 188 yards and two more scores.

Johnson fell a bit further than expected ranked as the fifth-best running back and No. 56 overall player on the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board. However, that was likely due to his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine.
In Indianapolis, Johnson ran a 4.57-second 40-yard dash, earning himself a 64 athleticism score. That ranked 27th overall among running backs at the combine.

Johnson joins running backs Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell in Pittsburgh, but he provides a long-term option at the position since Warren and Gainwell are both set to play on one year deals in 2025.

But the most important thing for the 21-year-old is to get fully healthy for the start of the season," writes Giants analyst Matt Citak. "I cannot imagine it will take long for Wilson and Nabers to build a connection of their own, and once they do, the sky is the limit for the star wideout. For right now, though, the veteran quarterback's growing chemistry with the other targets has been on full display these last couple of weeks." Throughout the 2024 NFL season, Nabers appeared in 15 games. He caught 109 passes for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. The closest receiver on the team in terms of production was Wan'Dale Robinson, who caught 93 passes for 699 yards and three scores. While Nabers' absence still provides a hint of concern simply due to the fact that he's a cornerstone player, there are slight positives in his absence. Wilson now gets an opportunity to find comfort with other weapons on the depth chart, figuring out his other options beyond Nabers, who will undoubtedly garner a high volume of targets throughout the 2025 NFL season. Last week, Robinson sent a lot of praise Wilson's way after catching passes from the veteran quarterback throughout the early phase of spring practices. A lot of buzz has been built around the veteran Jalin Hyatt, as he's been dubbed a potential breakout candidate for the upcoming season. The Giants haven't offered a timeline on Nabers, but the assumption is that there isn't much to worry about.

Jerry Jeudy and Diontae Johnson. And Johnson is a question mark. Johnson had a drama-filled season in 2024 and played for three different teams. He led the Panthers with 30 catches and 357 yards over the first two months of the season before being traded to Baltimore, where he lasted seven weeks and caught one pass. He was also suspended by Baltimore for refusing to enter a game against the Eagles on Dec. 1. The Ravens waived him not long after, and he was claimed by the Texans. Houston waived him three weeks later after he became emotional about playing just 15 plays in the Wild Card game against the Chargers. Advertisement Now, he'll try to clear his head in Cleveland, where he spoke during minicamp for the first time about last season. "I don't want to speak on a lot of stuff," Johnson said. "Everybody's going to have their opinions, you know what I'm saying? So at the end of the day, I'm the only one in that room that really know what's going on. They're entitled to their own opinion, so I can only go off of what I know and then try to go off what I put out there and my best effort. But like I said, last year is last year. I'm trying to change that narrative and move the right way and keep going." The Browns took a flyer on Johnson on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum with no guaranteed money.
