Conservatives Bash Musk's 'Awful Choice' After Rumors of Mike Pence Leading New 'America Party' Spread: 'Not a Good Start'
In recent weeks, following President Donald Trump's support of the "big, beautiful bill," Musk, the unelected former head of the Trump administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has hinted at plans to launch a new political party.
A veteran-run X account recently claimed Musk is reportedly considering Pence to lead the effort, sparking swift backlash from conservatives who hope the rumor isn't true.
"🚨 BREAKING: News Leaks suggest Elon Musk taps Mike Pence to run his new 'America Party,'" ThePatriotOasis posted on Saturday.
"Awful choice! Just awful!" one user responded.
"Not a good start if it were true," another added.
"I assume this is a fear mongering hit piece, but if it isn't @elonmusk DO NOT DO THIS! There are barely any politicians disliked more than Mike Pence," one user wrote.
"Elon, come ON. I guess this'll work out okay because Pence won't attract many. Can't we just primary the hell out of all the RINOs?! We don't need a new party. We need the Conservative Party to be truly conservative!" another implored.
One user asked Grok, X's AI-powered assistant developed by Musk's xAI company, whether the claim was true, which the bot denied.
"No, this claim is false," Grok said. "Elon Musk has floated starting an 'America Party' amid his feud with Trump over recent spending bills, but no credible sources indicate any involvement from Mike Pence. It's likely satire or misinformation."
"When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy," Musk wrote in an X post shared Saturday. "Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."
In a follow-up X post, he also claimed breaking the U.S.' "two-party stronghold" is "not hard tbh."
Musk spent at least $250 million supporting Trump's 2024 election campaign, and, while launching a new party is challenging, Musk's financial backing could significantly influence the 2026 midterms, which will decide control of Congress, NPR reported.

A Food Security Phase Classification report from May stated that 71,000 children under the age of 5 are facing acute malnutrition. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed over the last six weeks while trying to obtain humanitarian aid at aid distribution centers in Gaza, according to the UN. Israeli forces killed at least 31 people on Saturday alone while attempting to access aid from a US-backed food distribution site. The food aid had originally been intended for Afghanistan and Pakistan, however the State Department ended aid to Afghanistan and Yemen over concerns that it would fall into the hands of terrorists, NPR reported in April. Steve Davis, the operational head of DOGE, joined Musk in leaving the government task force on May 29, shortly before Musk ignited his public feud with his former ally President Donald Trump. However, Davis reportedly stayed in contact with DOGE employees, even leading a meeting in early June, Politico reported. "He was at the GSA running the meeting like it was business as usual," one source told the outlet. The White House Presidential Office of Personnel reportedly ended up having to contact DOGE employees to tell them to cut contact with Davis. "A lot of people got uncomfortable," one source said following the message from the White House. "So many people received that message from the White House and I think that bothered them, that Steve was continuing to tell everybody that everything is normal and to act like he is still involved in running the show." Following the announcement, GSA Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian, Josh Gruenbaum and Anthony Armstrong took charge of DOGE at the direction of Davis. But when it came time to defend their new authority, one source said that the trio claimed to have been appointed by Vice President JD Vance and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. This account was denied by a senior Trump administration official. And Harrison Fields, a spokesperson for the White House, added to the outlet that "every agency and department is executing this mission seamlessly." Musk was named by the White House to serve as a special government employee with DOGE earlier this year with the goal of helping to cut wasteful spending and abuse. DOGE's work was met with fierce backlash by voters across the country after thousands of federal workers were laid off. Pentagon Inks Contracts For Musk's XAI, Competitors
The Pentagon announced contracts on Monday with multiple leading US artificial intelligence firms including Elon Musk's xAI, which has faced intense scrutiny in recent days over anti-Semitic posts by its Grok chatbot. Each of the contracts to xAI, Anthropic, Google and OpenAI have a ceiling value of $200 million, the Pentagon's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) said in a statement. The awards will enable the Department of Defense "to leverage the technology and talent of US frontier AI companies to develop agentic AI workflows across a variety of mission areas," it said. The contract with xAI comes just days after the company was forced to apologize again for controversial posts by its Grok chatbot. After an update on July 7, the chatbot praised Adolf Hitler in some responses on the X social media platform, denounced "anti-white hate," and described Jewish representation in Hollywood as "disproportionate." xAI apologized for the extremist and offensive messages, and said it had corrected the instructions that led to the incidents. The release on Wednesday of Grok 4, the latest chatbot version, was almost met with scrutiny after it appeared to consult Musk's positions on some questions it was asked before responding. The contract between xAI and the Department of Defense comes even as Musk and President Donald Trump have publicly feuded in recent weeks. OpenAI had previously announced in June that it had secured a Defense Department contract with a ceiling of $200 million. "Establishing these partnerships will broaden DoD use of and experience in frontier AI capabilities and increase the ability of these companies to understand and address critical national security needs with the most advanced AI capabilities U.S. industry has to offer," said the CDAO statement on Monday.
