Officials directed to respond swiftly to wild animal menace
Presiding over the Karnataka Development Programme meeting on Monday, Mr. Venkatesh said the Forest Department was receiving a large number of complaints from the public over the human-animal conflicts.
'Villagers are reporting sightings of leopards in their areas. In such cases, the officials should rush to the spot without any negligence, and take swift action to provide compensation for crops damaged by the wild animals,' he said.
Mr. Venkatesh instructed the officials to look into the petitions submitted by representatives of farmers' organisations and address their woes.
He directed the officials of the Horticulture Department and Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs) to hold meetings with banana growers to address their issues. The banana growers should get a fair price for their produce, he said.
Mr. Venkatesh directed the officials of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation to hold meetings and ensure that steps are taken to facilitate the operation of KSRTC buses in rural areas so that students do not face any inconvenience.
With regard to complaints about a lack of cleanliness in hotels, bakeries, and restaurants, the Minister said the City Municipal Councils, Town Municipalities and Town Panchayats in the district should conduct inspections and take action against establishments that lack hygiene and cleanliness.
Mr. Venkatesh directed the Health and Family Welfare Department officials to ensure that health services reach the people and that medical teams should visit villages to conduct health check-ups and provide treatment and medication.
M.V. Venkatesh, secretary of the Department of Kannada and Culture, said, 'People should be persuaded to avoid deliveries at home. If deliveries take place in hospitals, it will ensure both mother and child remain healthy. The maternal and infant mortality rate should come down,' he said.
K. Vivekananda, MLC, sought for complete information regarding the shortage of teachers in educational institutions so that a solution for the same can be found.
Meanwhile, the Minister said permanent drinking water facility should be provided to villages that were receiving water through tankers. Borewells should be drilled in villages facing water scarcity, he said.
He directed the Forest Department officials to make it a priority that drinking water is available to the wild animals.
MLAs M.R. Manjunath and H.M. Ganesh Prasad, Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag, Chamarajanagar Zilla Panchayat CEO Mona Roat, Superintendent of Police B.T. Kavitha, Chamarajanagar Urban Development Authority (CHUDA) President Mohammed Azghar Munna, and others were present at the meeting.

‘PrYAAS': 37,800 children to undergo speech, hearing tests in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar
The Chamarajanagar district administration, in collaboration with the Departments of Women and Child Development, and Health and Family Welfare, and the Mysuru-based All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), has launched the Programme for Assessment of Young Children for Auditory and Speech-Language Skills (PrAYAAS) in the Karnataka district on Friday. Minister in charge of the district K. Venkatesh, who is also the Animal Husbandry and Sericulture Minister, launched the initiative at an anganwadi in ward no. 10 of Karinanjanapura Layout. The initiative focuses on speech (vocal) and hearing tests for anganwadi children. After launching the programme and wishing success to the scheme, Mr. Venkatesh reviewed the screening process that began for the children. Appreciating the initiative, MLA for Chamarajanagar C. Puttarangashetty said that the programme is being implemented for the first time in the State by the Chamarajanagar district administration, and described it as a progressive step for supporting the learning processes of children. Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag said that parents often notice their child's inability to hear or speak clearly only at a later stage, and poor families in rural areas may not be able to afford treatment. Therefore, the district administration partnered with AIISH Mysuru to provide free medical services for all children aged between six months and six years, she added. The programme identifies and treats speech and hearing problems among anganwadi children at an early stage and also trains anganwadi workers to recognise early symptoms of speech and hearing impairment. It also aims to develop a comprehensive plan of action to provide screening and treatment facilities at the district hospital for affected persons. The district has 440 anganwadis with about 37,800 children. Of these, the target for the current year is to screen 35,326 children. The programme has been launched symbolically, and training for anganwadi workers by master trainers will be conducted next month. The scheme will then be rolled out across all anganwadis in the district, the Deputy Commissioner informed. According to AIISH, research indicates that about 14% of children are at a risk of having speech, language, or hearing difficulties, which, if left unaddressed, can hinder their overall development. In view of this, PrAYAAS aims to identify all such children aged 6 months to 6 years across the district and provide timely interventions. Screening will be carried out by experienced speech-language pathologists and audiologists from AIISH and ENT surgeons from the District Hospital. Conditions such as speech delays, mispronunciations, stammering, voice disorders, lack of social interaction, hearing loss, and ear infections will be assessed, a press release from AIISH said. The initiative, scheduled to run until March 31, 2026, will be implemented in five phases.

Dasara elephants relax at Aranya Bhavana ; Palace entry on August 10 evening
Mysuru: The first batch of nine elephants, led by the majestic Captain Abhimanyu, has arrived in Mysuru from Veeranahosahalli near Nagarahole to participate in the world-famous Mysuru Dasara Jamboo Savari. The elephants are currently stationed at the Forest Department premises in Ashokapuram, where they are relaxing after their journey from the wild. Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Dr. Prabhugowda confirmed that the Gajapade (elephant team) is in good health, having undergone medical check-ups and blood tests. 'All the elephants have previously participated in Dasara and have adjusted well to the local environment,' he said. This year, for the first time ever, the ceremonial palace entry for the elephants will be held in the evening. On August 10, between 6:40 pm and 7:20 pm—during the auspicious Makara Godhooli Lagna—the Gajapade will be accorded a traditional welcome through the Jayamarthanda Gate of the Mysuru Palace. Forest staff, mahouts, and kavadis (caretakers) are attending to the elephants, giving them regular baths and feeding them a diet of paddy, green grass, and other nutritious food. The elephants and their caretakers are said to be in a relaxed mood as they settle in before the training sessions begin. Authorities have allowed the public to view the elephants from a distance at the Forest Campus. Crowds are already gathering in large numbers to get a glimpse of the revered animals that symbolize the grandeur of Mysuru Dasara. Training for the Jamboo Savari will officially begin after the elephants are ceremonially welcomed into the palace on August 10.

Ensure timely supply for fertilizers to farmers: official
K.V. Trilok Chandra, Commissioner of the Department of School Education and Administrative Officer of the Zilla Panchayat, who also serves as District In-Charge Secretary, emphasised the need for proactive measures to ensure adequate and timely fertilizer supply to meet farmers' requirements during the ongoing monsoon season. Chairing the quarterly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) review meeting in Ballari on Saturday, Mr. Trilok Chandra sought details about the fertilizer availability in the district. The Joint Director of Agriculture said that the district's demand for fertilizers until the end of July stood at 27,025 tonnes, against which, 34,163 tonnes were stocked (including opening stock) and, of which, 25,887 tonnes had been distributed, and 8,286 tonnes remained in reserve. The officer informed the meeting that the supply and distribution were being managed as per the department's planning, and added that there had been consistent demand from farmers for urea. 'District-level fertilizer inspectors have been carrying out surprise inspections at wholesale and retail outlets to monitor stock and pricing. Efforts are also under way to promote the use of nano-fertilizers and raise awareness about the harmful effects of unscientific usage of urea, in line with directives from the Centre and State,' the official said. Reacting to this, Mr. Chandra directed officials to report any instances of fertilizer being sold at inflated prices or hoarded artificially, to the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police immediately. He called for prompt implementation of agriculture and horticulture schemes, while stressing the need to promote animal husbandry in the district. When Mr. Chandra took up the public health issues for review and instructed the officials to ensure that quality treatment and essential facilities were available in government hospitals, Deputy Commissioner Prashant Kumar Mishra intervened and raised concerns over the functioning of BMCRC (Ballari Medical College and Research Centre). 'My office has received repeated public complaints about the unavailability of ambulances, doctors, medicines, blood, and even basic equipment such as wheelchairs, and the conduct of outsourced staff and home guards, that they are not responding appropriately to public needs. Worse, the BMCRC Director is avoiding review meetings called for addressing the issues,' he said adding that the priority should be given to strengthening healthcare delivery instead of focusing merely on infrastructure tenders. Mr. Chandra instructed all department heads to focus on the proper implementation of schemes under their jurisdiction and to work actively towards achieving the set targets. Highlighting a Karnataka High Court order, he directed the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Women and Child Development Officer, and officials of Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (Gescom) to immediately survey and remove any overhead electric lines running across Anganwadis and schools. To combat malnutrition, Mr. Chandra told officials to ensure regular health check-ups and treatment for children up to 18 years of age under the National Child Health Programme, focusing particularly on congenital disorders and developmental delays. He urged officials to improve the quality of education for students residing in government hostels by providing better facilities and taking targeted measures to enhance academic outcomes in the district. The meeting was attended by Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Haris Sumair, Superintendent of Police Shobha Rani V.J., various heads of departments, and Taluk Panchayat Executive Officers.
