5 Things Robert Kiyosaki Gets Wrong About Building Wealth, According to Experts

In his popular book 'Rich Dad Poor Dad,' author Robert Kiyosaki talked about financial planning and building wealth. Many readers have since put his advice to work to help improve their money situations.

However, as with nearly any advice, there are a number of critics who've said his advice doesn't work for all situations. Michael Gregory of Dad is FIRE, for instance, noted that one reason the advice doesn't work for everyone is that Kiyosaki's push for constant wealth accumulation and no clear point at which to stop may put some financial futures in jeopardy.
GOBankingRates talked to more financial experts for their thoughts on advice Kiyosaki may have gotten wrong about building wealth (and what you can do instead).
Christopher Stroup, founder and president at Silicon Beach Financial, took issue with Kiyosaki's approach to real estate.
'Kiyosaki promotes real estate as the ultimate wealth-building tool, but the reality is more nuanced than that,' Stroup said. 'Passive income from real estate isn't always passive because it requires capital, time and expertise. A well-diversified portfolio that includes real estate, equities and tax-efficient strategies can lead to more sustainable long-term wealth.'
Robert Kiyosaki Is Dumping Gold and Silver:
Per Stroup, Kiyosaki's enthusiasm for Bitcoin overlooks its fundamental risks.
'Unlike stocks or real estate, Bitcoin doesn't generate dividends, rent or earnings,' he said. 'It relies purely on speculation. Extreme volatility makes it unsuitable as a core retirement asset, and its price fluctuations can erase gains in an instant.'
Kiyosaki encourages using debt to acquire assets, but not all debt is productive. According to Stroup, borrowing only works when the underlying asset appreciates and generates enough income to cover your liabilities.
'Many investors over-leverage, assuming values will always rise,' he said. 'All you need to do is look back to 2008 to be proven otherwise. Smart leverage isn't about aggressive expansion. It's about aligning risk with liquidity and your long-term financial goals.'
While Kiyosaki emphasizes mindset over technical knowledge, wealth isn't built on mindset alone, Stroup noted.
'Tax planning, estate strategies and diversified investments require real expertise,' he explained. 'A 'just think rich' approach can lead to overconfidence and poor financial decisions.
Stroup said the real key isn't just motivation. He said it's surrounding yourself with professionals who turn financial complexity into actionable strategies.
While traditional financial advice often focuses on growing your net worth, Kiyosaki has suggested the real key to financial freedom is consistent and positive cash flow. He has stressed that you should prioritize assets that generate regular income — like rental properties, dividend-paying stocks or businesses — over simply accumulating assets that might not be producing income.
'While this may be helpful for someone who is retired, cash flow is not the primary focus for a young accumulator who already has their W-2 income to live off of,' said Filip Telibasa, a certified financial planner at Benzina Wealth. 'Instead, this person is better off finding aggressive growth stocks that do not necessarily pay a dividend or cash flow. Holding these positions in a tax advantaged vehicle like a Roth IRA further compounds long term benefits.'

Bitcoin Holds Near $120K, Ether Rallies Towards $4.7K on Trump's Comment, Fed Rate Cut Bets

Crypto markets extended gains on Wednesday as traders digested a mix of political tailwinds, dovish Fed expectations, and ongoing ETF inflows into ether (ETH). Altcoins added to their rally during late Tuesday U.S. afternoon hours after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested the Federal Reserve should consider a 50 basis point rate cut at its upcoming September meeting. Ether extended a strong week with gains of nearly 30%, nearing fresh highs that has historically preceded rotations and market frenzy in altcoins and microcap tokens. ETFs tied to the token registered $520 million in positive flows on Tuesday, data shows, on track to reach over $2 billion in weekly flows for the first time. Bitcoin (BTC) remained steady just under $120,000. Solana's SOL surged 12% to $198, BNB Chain's BNB (BNB) added 5% to $837, and XRP (XRP) gained 4% to $3.25. Dogecoin (DOGE) and Cardano (ADA) rose over 8%, continuing a tendency of following ETH price action. Traders say recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump fueled sentiment after ordering regulators to 'look into' the possibility of adding crypto — alongside private equity — to U.S. 401(k) retirement plans. While this prospect is currently exploratory, the possibility of retirement accounts gaining direct exposure to crypto would represent a significant structural shift in demand. 'Ethereum has been the standout, with mainstream equity analysts now joining the FOMO trade,' said Augustine Fan, head of insights at SignalPlus, in a Telegram message. 'BTC implied volatility remains near all-time lows while ETH's short-dated vol has jumped materially — that's a sign traders see more upside and near-term action in ETH.' Implied volatility (IV) is the market's forecast of how much a crypto's price might move in the future, based on options prices. If IV is low, traders aren't expecting big swings and if it's high, they're bracing for bigger moves. Short-dated volatility refers to the implied volatility of options that expire soon, typically within days or weeks. This reflects expectations for near-term price action rather than the long-term outlook. In this case, BTC's IV is near record lows, indicating that traders expect its price to remain relatively stable. ETH's short-dated volatility is jumping, which suggests that traders expect larger near-term price swings — and probably more upside — in ETH compared to BTC. Rate-cut bets added fuel to the move. Markets now price a high likelihood of the Federal Reserve lowering rates before year-end, easing macro headwinds for risk assets. 'Ethereum's breakout past $4,600 reflects growing confidence in its institutional adoption,' said Nick Ruck, director at LVRG Research, told CoinDesk. 'Bitcoin holding near $119,000 shows resilient demand. A dovish Fed pivot could further accelerate ETH's outperformance, especially with ETF speculation and scaling upgrades ahead,' Ruck added. Meanwhile, FxPro's Alex Kuptsikevich noted the rally is unusual in that altcoin strength appears to be pulling BTC higher, not the other way around. 'Bitcoin is testing historical highs above $122,000 with the next major target at $135,000-$138,000. Ethereum is now in striking distance of its all-time high above $4,800,' he said.

Crypto analyst makes shocking claim about Bitcoin's activity

Crypto analyst makes shocking claim about Bitcoin's activity originally appeared on TheStreet. Long-dormant 'OG' Bitcoin wallets from the early 2010s are suddenly springing to life, unloading massive sums of BTC onto exchanges. The timing and scale of these moves, says John Divine of BlockFills, likely aren't coincidental — he believes they're deliberate stress tests of the market's liquidity depth. Coins from wallets dating back to 2010 and 2011 — collectively holding hundreds of thousands of Bitcoin — have been spotted moving to exchanges and OTC desks. 'That coin is being sold in the spot market,' Divine said, noting that the sellers are likely not casual holders. 'I have a hunch that there are some sophisticated players here that are really just testing liquidity.' If that's the case, the market appears to be holding up better than expected. 'Last week we saw a lot of size spot get sold,' Divine explained. 'Bitcoin went down to right around $115,000, not much of a move from $120,00 based on the selling pressure.' To him, that resilience signals a maturing market. With Bitcoin's market cap hovering near $2 trillion, the ability to absorb large block sales without sharp price swings marks a critical milestone. For years, thin liquidity and extreme volatility raised doubts over whether BTC could ever operate as a stable, institutional-grade asset. These stress tests suggest it's getting closer. Rather than sparking panic, the reactivation of these old wallets seems to be affirming market strength. 'I think what that says to me is liquidity is building in this asset class,' Divine said. 'The market is finally ready to take that next maturation leg.' Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $119,230, down 0.79% over the past 24 hours but still up 4.23% over the last week, holding above the $118,000 support after rebounding from a seven-day low of $112,867. The world's largest cryptocurrency has a market cap of $2.37 trillion and a 24-hour trading volume of $44.77 billion, with price action remaining within a relatively tight range between $118,252 and $120,693 in the past day. Despite the slight pullback, BTC is only about 3% below its all-time high of $122,838 set on July 14, 2025, reflecting resilient buying interest amid broader market stability. Why Wall Street analyst Tom Lee is betting on Ethereum with a $20bn raise

Tom Lee isn't playing around. The Wall Street strategist and new chairman of BitMine, a little-known Bitcoin miner recently turned Ethereum treasury, is raising a staggering $20 billion more to keep gobbling up more of the cryptocurrency. That figure stunned analysts. 'It certainly caught me by surprise,' Luke Nolan, senior Ethereum research associate at CoinShares, told DL News. 'It's quite a big move and does signal their intention on vastly increasing their treasury size at quite a rapid pace.' BitMine already holds about 1.2 million in Ether, worth roughly $5 billion. Since late July, when it kicked off its new corporate treasury scheme, shares are up fifteenfold. 'True scarcity' For Lee, the aggressive nature with which his — and potentially other — companies will add Ether to their balance sheet, is what many investors are overlooking. 'There's true scarcity in Ethereum right now,' Lee previously told DL News. But it's not just the asset, 'it's the velocity at which we're accumulating it,' he said. Corporate crypto treasuries are in vogue. Michael Saylor kicked it off in August 2020, since then spurring an entire cast of copycats within the Bitcoin ecosystem. In the past months, firms are exploring further down the risk curve, adding alternative cryptocurrencies to their balance sheets. It's an 'alarming' trend, some say. 'Pretty bad development' At the end of July, BitMine irked the cryptocurrency community when it announced a $1 billion stock buy back plan. Instead of accumulating Ether, the company would buy back its shares, potentially stalling the momentum for both BitMine's share price as well as the price of the cryptocurrency. Critics said it was a 'pretty bad development.' Ethereum has since rallied, now trading at about $4,500 — just 10% shy from its November 2021 all-time high. 'Counterintuitively aligned' Nolan reckons the buyback plan and the $20 billion raise are part of a single, counterintuitive, playbook. 'This goes well with their recently announced $1b buyback plan,' Nolan told DL News. 'While counterintuitive: when the NAV premium is very high, issue shares to buy Ethereum. When the NAV premium is low, or even negative, use cash to buy shares.' NAV stands for net asset value, and reflects the difference between a company's value and the value of its underlying cryptocurrency holdings. But NAV can cut both ways. When demand for a company's shares shrivels up, the price can drop below the value of the asset it holds. This is known as a discount to NAV. It has happened before. For instance, with the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, which at one point traded at a 50% discount. Grayscale managed to bounce back by transforming itself into a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Although the discount faded, billions exited the fund, rotating into cheaper ETFs from BlackRock or Fidelity. Pecking order Additionally, BitMine's approach, which Nolan called cautious, offers optionality for investors, Max Shannon, senior research associate at Bitwise, told DL News. 'Repurchase when undervalued, issue when overvalued, and improve the odds of sustaining a higher market NAV.' As similar as Lee's move to mimic Michael Saylor and purchase as much Ether as he can, the approach is setting BitMine apart, according to Nolan. That's because it 'keeps shareholders at a higher level,' while MicroStrategy 'has multiple share classes and debt obligations that mean equity holders are near the bottom on the pecking order,' Nolan said.
