Kota Kinabalu: State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh said the Sabah Government is very concerned about the loss-making Government-linked companies (GLCs) which have been likened to being 'sinkholes'. He said State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun is overseeing the matter.

Brendon said any document of a Sabah GLC or statutory bodies that want to enter into a business agreement with any party have to get the approval of the State Cabinet, after being vetted by his Chamber, besides other relevant authorities. 'This was a recent guideline,' Soh said at the Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights (Sabar) Town Hall session on Good Governance on Saturday moderated by former Sabah Law Society President Datuk Roger Chin and Sabar organiser Lim Hock Song. 'Any agreement that needs to be approved between the GLC and third party has to go through my State AG's Chambers.

And I have to look out for what is in the best interests of the State. And the State's interests come first,' Soh stressed. Soh said the State Cabinet has formed an Oversight Committee for GLCs co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Sabah Ministry of Finance and the independent financial advisor to the Chief Minister, Siaw Kok Chee, who was a banker. Among members of the committee are a senior lawyer and a partner of one of the global big four audit firms. 'They are giving their views and inputs. This is a progressive initiative to address the issue,' Soh said. He stressed that the Oversight Committee has Cabinet authority to analyse, investigate any GLC and obtain all financial information required for the probe. Full discourse. 'We recognise that this is part of good governance. We need check-and-balance, oversight, accountability and transparency. 'At the end of the day, if there is bad news, we cannot hide it. We have to be frank and open, otherwise we are culpable ourselves. He said SMJ Energy S/B is a GLC that should be emulated by others where good governance is concerned. Earlier, former banker and Sabah Economic Advisory Council (SEAC) advisor, Datuk John Lo, posed the question, 'Can Sabah afford for the GLCs to continue with the endless poor performance, financial losses, abuses and misgovernance?' 'Of course, GLCs can be turned around,' Lo said, and he was glad that the Oversight Committee was formed with the right people appointed in place in some GLCs. 'Every Sabahan man, woman and every voter, after listening to Sabar's podcasts, should demand from politicians, reformation, transformation and rationalisation of Sabah's GLCs. 'The economic and financial cost of non-performing GLC is excessively high on all Sabahans. Sabar's highlighting of Sabah's GLCs will benefit all Sabahans,' Lo said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Civil service committed to neutrality, upholds King's decree

PUTRAJAYA: Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said civil servants remain committed to upholding the principles of neutrality, impartiality, and loyalty to the government of the day. In line with the decree by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, that civil servants must remain free from political party influence, he said these principles form the foundation of good governance and ensure that all decisions and policies are implemented without political bias and in the public interest. 'Civil servants will continue to stand firm in carrying out the trust enshrined in the Federal Constitution. They also adhere to their pledge to deliver the best service to the people and the country,' he told Bernama today. He added that this commitment forms the backbone of policy implementation and the delivery of efficient public service. Shamsul Azri said that as the main machinery of government, the civil service is determined to implement and translate all policies decided by the government to ensure the best possible service delivery to the people and the nation. Earlier in his speech at the investiture in conjunction with his birthday at Istana Negara, Sultan Ibrahim urged civil servants to always prioritise the interests of the nation and the people. His Majesty said that government officials must ensure that all decisions are made in accordance with established rules and regulations, not at the behest of politicians.

No Malaysian pilgrim will miss Arafah wukuf, Tabung Haji assures amid Saudi movement curbs

MAKKAH, June 2 — Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has assured that no Malaysian pilgrim will miss performing wukuf in Arafah this Thursday, despite the Saudi Arabian government enforcing movement restrictions during this year's haj season. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said TH has made detailed preparations, including sufficient transport arrangements to ensure all pilgrims can travel to Arafah safely. 'Yes, from Tabung Haji's side, transportation for the pilgrims has been arranged and there is no issue. TH will ensure that no pilgrim is left behind; they will be in Arafah on time for wukuf,' he said after attending a meet-and-greet session with pilgrims at the Abraj Al Tayseer accommodation building and launching the 1446H/2025M Masyair Cleanliness Programme here today. In a related development, Mohd Na'im also confirmed that the Saudi Arabian government had given assurances that adequate transportation would be provided to ensure no pilgrim would have to walk to Arafah, following the restrictions announced earlier. 'Although the exact number of vehicles has not been specified, the Saudi government has shown strong commitment to safeguarding the safety of pilgrims by providing alternative transport, including buses and trains,' he explained. Commenting further, Mohd Na'im said that the new Saudi policy known as 'No Visa, No Haj' had helped reduce the number of unregistered pilgrims attempting to enter the holy land. 'This means that the pilgrims present in the holy land this year are those who possess valid permits. The situation is more controlled, and we hope the number of pilgrims set by the Saudi Ministry of Haj will match the transportation facilities provided,' he said. Meanwhile, Mohd Na'im said TH is fully prepared to handle the movement of pilgrims to the Masya'ir area beginning Wednesday. 'Alhamdulillah, as in previous years, TH is always ready. God willing, when the first group of pilgrims moves on Wednesday, our haj personnel will already be stationed in the Masya'ir area, particularly in Arafah, to receive and guide the pilgrims to their respective tents. 'Overall, the level of readiness is high. Of course, there is always room for improvement, but the commitment shown by TH and its personnel is truly commendable,' he said. — Bernama

Honorific titles not for sale or lobbying, says Agong

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim said only those who have served a long time in the government or brought pride to the country deserve to be conferred honours. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim has reminded that federal honours cannot be bought or lobbied for, saying that these awards are reserved only for those who have truly served the nation. Delivering his royal address at the investiture ceremony at Istana Negara in conjunction with his official birthday today, the king said that he personally vets every nominee, even though the government has provided guidelines, Bernama reported. 'In my view, only those who have served a long time in the government or brought pride to the country deserve to be conferred honours. Not many pass this benchmark every year,' he was quoted as saying. 'Even though people are lobbying for titles, I will not entertain them. Titles like 'Datuk' or 'Tan Sri' are not for sale. If one has so much money, they should do charity and help the poor instead.' Sultan Ibrahim also urged today's 104 recipients to treasure and take pride in the honours they have received. The king also took the opportunity to remind leaders at all levels not to play politics with sensitive issues or stir division, warning that an excess of political parties and internal factions only fuels disunity and hostilities. 'Use your head before making any decision. There is no greater gift for me than a united people,' he said. 'I once said that a virus would hit this country, and now we can see it spreading, (it seems) incurable. I keep repeating this warning because we must not forget.' He also announced plans for a Kembara Diraja tour across the federal territories to better understand people's lives and distribute zakat aid to the underprivileged and eligible recipients.
