Refer sports Bills to Joint Parliamentary Committee: Opposition urges Lok Sabha Speaker

Opposition leaders of several parties on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to refer the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 to a joint committee of Parliament for further scrutiny. In a letter to the Speaker, they said the two Bills listed for consideration and passage in the House need broader consensus. 'In view of their national importance, the need for broad consensus, and the value of consulting relevant stakeholders, we respectfully request that both these Bills be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation,' the Opposition leaders said. The signatories to the letter include K. C. Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi and K. Suresh of the Congress, Supriya Sule the NCP (SP) Lok Sabha member, Trinamool Congress' Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the DMK's K. Kanimozhi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant, RSP's N. K. Premachandran, VCK's D. Ravi Kumar, MDMK's Durai Vaiko and IUML's E. T. Mohammed Bashir, among others. The leaders argued that the Bills propose wide-ranging reforms in the governance, regulation, and ethical oversight of sports in India. 'They have serious implications for our sportspersons, sports federations, and India's standing in international sporting bodies,' the letter said. 'A JPC would ensure a more comprehensive and participatory process, allowing for careful scrutiny of the provisions, potential implications, and alignment with international standards. We hope this request will be taken into account to help ensure fair and effective governance reforms in the Indian sporting ecosystem,' it added. The National Sports Governance Bill seeks to provide for recognition of national sports bodies and regulate their functioning, while the National Anti-Doping Bill aims to strengthen India's anti-doping framework. The move by Opposition comes after the government got the two Bills passed in the Lok Sabha amid protests and disruption by the Opposition over their demand to have a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

Sourav Ganguly Bats For Ignored India Star's Return For Asia Cup, Calls Him 'All Format' Player

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly wants the national selectors to recall Bengal pacer Mukesh Kumar to the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Mukesh, who last played for India during a T20I against Zimbabwe last year, has played three Tests, six ODIs and 17 T20Is, taking a combined 32 wicket across competitions. Speaking to India Today, Ganguly suggested that Mukesh is well-suited to bowl across all three formats and deserves more opportunities. "Mukesh should definitely play. In these conditions, he's an excellent fast bowler. He consistently takes wickets in domestic cricket and deserves a chance," said Ganguly. 'Since there's no Test cricket at the moment, let's see if he gets picked for the T20s or the Asia Cup. He's a bowler who can perform across all formats. His time will come—just needs to be patient,' Ganguly added. Mukesh, who was not part of the team for the just-concluded five-match Test series against England, shared a cryptic post on social media ahead of the 1st match in Leeds. Mukesh took to Instagram and wrote: "Karma bides its time. You will always have to watch out. Karma is unforgiving and always get payback." In the lead up to the series, Mukesh played the first unofficial Test against England Lions in Canterbury, where he took three wickets. However, he was dropped from the team for the second game in Northampton. He also played no part in the intra-squad practice match at Kent in June. Last week, Mukesh was named in the East Zone 15-member squad for the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy. Ishan Kishan was named captain of the 15-member squad, which also includes Indian seamer Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami and all-rounder Riyan Parag. Abhimanyu Easwaran, part of India's Test squad in England, was named vice-captain. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who scored the quickest century in Youth ODIs during India Under-19's tour to England last month, was one of the six standbys. The Duleep Trophy was last played in the zonal format in 2023-24, when South Zone won the tournament. East Zone will play the domestic season's opening game against North Zone from August 28 at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Opposition urges Lok Sabha Speaker to refer National Sports Governance, Anti-Doping Bills to JPC

NEW DELHI: Leaders of several opposition parties on Wednesday urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 to a joint committee of Parliament for further scrutiny. In a joint letter to the Speaker, the opposition leaders said the two significant bills are listed for consideration and passage in the House and there is need for a broader consensus on the bills considering their national importance. "We the undersigned Members of Parliament representing various Opposition Parties write to respectfully draw your attention to two significant Bills listed for consideration and passage in the House: The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 and The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025," they said in their letter. The leaders said the bills propose wide-ranging reforms in the governance, regulation, and ethical oversight of sports in India. "They have serious implications for our sportspersons, sports federations, and India's standing in international sporting bodies," they said. "In view of their national importance, the need for broad consensus, and the value of consulting relevant stakeholders, we respectfully request that both these Bills be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation," the opposition leaders said. "A JPC would ensure a more comprehensive and participatory process, allowing for careful scrutiny of the provisions, potential implications, and alignment with international standards. We hope this request will be taken into account to help ensure fair and effective governance reforms in the Indian sporting ecosystem," they also asserted in their letter. The National Sports Governance Bill seeks to provide for recognition of national sports bodies and regulate their functioning while the National Anti-Doping Bill aims to strengthen India's anti-doping framework. The signatories to the letter include Congress' KC Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi, K Suresh, NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule, TMC's Kakoli Ghosh Dastikar, DMK's K Kanomozhi, Shiv Sena (UBT) Arvind Sawant, RSP's NK Premachandran, VCK's D Ravi Kumar, MDMK's Durai Vaiko and IUML's ET Mohammed Bashir, among others. The government has said that if the opposition will create uproar in the House and not allow the House to function, they would be constrained to pass the legislative business in the din. The opposition has been creating uproar in both houses of Parliament on their demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, which they allege is aimed at disenfranchising a large number of voters.
