Refer sports Bills to Joint Parliamentary Committee: Opposition urges Lok Sabha Speaker
In a letter to the Speaker, they said the two Bills listed for consideration and passage in the House need broader consensus.
'In view of their national importance, the need for broad consensus, and the value of consulting relevant stakeholders, we respectfully request that both these Bills be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation,' the Opposition leaders said.
The signatories to the letter include K. C. Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi and K. Suresh of the Congress, Supriya Sule the NCP (SP) Lok Sabha member, Trinamool Congress' Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, the DMK's K. Kanimozhi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant, RSP's N. K. Premachandran, VCK's D. Ravi Kumar, MDMK's Durai Vaiko and IUML's E. T. Mohammed Bashir, among others.
The leaders argued that the Bills propose wide-ranging reforms in the governance, regulation, and ethical oversight of sports in India.
'They have serious implications for our sportspersons, sports federations, and India's standing in international sporting bodies,' the letter said.
'A JPC would ensure a more comprehensive and participatory process, allowing for careful scrutiny of the provisions, potential implications, and alignment with international standards. We hope this request will be taken into account to help ensure fair and effective governance reforms in the Indian sporting ecosystem,' it added.
The National Sports Governance Bill seeks to provide for recognition of national sports bodies and regulate their functioning, while the National Anti-Doping Bill aims to strengthen India's anti-doping framework.
The move by Opposition comes after the government got the two Bills passed in the Lok Sabha amid protests and disruption by the Opposition over their demand to have a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

India remains crucial partner: US State Department
India remains a key strategic partner for the United States, the US State Department emphasised on Thursday amid mounting tensions between New Delhi and Washington. The department's principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott told reporters that America would pursue a 'full and frank' dialogue with India. The US State Department's principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott told reporters that America would pursue a 'full and frank' dialogue with India. (AFP) 'What I can say in terms of India is that the President (Donald Trump) has been very clear in terms of the concerns he has regarding the trade imbalance, regarding the concerns he has when it comes to the (Indian) purchase of Russian oil. You have seen him take action directly on that,' Pigott said at a press briefing in response to a question about Prime Minister Modi's reported upcoming visit to China for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). 'India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in a full and frank dialogue. That will continue and Secretary Rubio has spoken on that. Like anything in foreign policy, you are not going to align 100% of the time on everything,' Pigott added. Pigott's statements come as a shift in tone even as India-US tensions rise over Indian purchases of Russian energy and Trump's decision to levy a 50% tariff on India. India has pushed back at President Trump's tariff levies, terming them 'unfair, unreasonable and unjustified'. India's ministry of external affairs also took aim at US and European purchases of energy, chemicals and fertilisers from Russia as evidence of a double standard. Tensions with America have also sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with President Lula of Brazil, and on Friday, with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Both India and Brazil face a 50% tariff from the United States and the two leaders have had increasingly strained relations with US President Donald Trump. They agreed to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. On a visit to Moscow, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval stated that India and Russia were finalising dates for Putin's visit to India, and on Friday, Modi said in a post on X that he looks forward 'to hosting President Putin in India later this year'. And China issued a statement welcoming Prime Minister Modi for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit to be held in Tianjin at the end of this month. 'China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness,' said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun. HT earlier reported that the bureaucracies in New Delhi and Washington are attempting to steady the relationship, with talks ongoing for high-level energy, financial and diplomatic. cooperation continuing. Contacts between the Indian government and their American counterparts have remained relatively unaffected by political tensions.

'No direct deposit...': Texas Dems face paycheck restrictions amid walkout in redistricting standoff
Texas Democrats are under mounting pressure to return to the state as Republicans push for a quorum to advance key legislative measures on Friday. In a bid to compel Democrats back to Austin, Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows sent out a memo to House reps requiring the lawmakers who broke quorum to collect their paychecks in person. House leaders announced that direct deposits will be suspended until a quorum is restored, meaning enough voting members must be present. 'Yesterday, Attorney General Ken Paxton and I took action to domesticate the civil arrest warrants in the state of Illinois seeking to make them enforceable beyond Texas state lines. I expect suits in other states will be forthcoming,' Burrows said in the chamber.
