Rabat – World Bank vice president for the Middle East and North Africa, Ousmane Dione, reaffirmed Wednesday in Rabat the institution's commitment to helping Morocco prepare for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
In a meeting with Minister Delegate in Charge of the Budget, Fouzi Lejkaa, Dione noted the need to translate planned investment and infrastructure initiatives into tangible chances for employment, economic growth, and increased competitiveness.
He mentioned the strong cooperation between Morocco and the World Bank, citing the variety of projects that have been financed by the institution over the years.
Dione commended the country's advancement in priority sectors such as social protection, territorial development, and infrastructure, which have been crucial to the development of the country.
Lekjaa also mentioned structural reforms and sectoral strategies as key factors in Morocco's economic growth.
The country has centralized its social policies, Lekjaa argued, stressing that it has seen tremendous advancements in railways and sport infrastructures, social protection, sustainable development, and territorial balance.

Lekjaa's sanguine comments about Morocco's railways network come as Hyundai Rotem has closed a historic, MAD 15 billion ($1.5 billion) deal with the country's National Railway Office (ONCF) to supply double-decker trains.
Among other key projects are the extension of the high-speed rail link to Marrakech, the launch of regional express rail services, the acquisition of new trains, and the construction of new stations.
Lekjaa concluded his comments by pointing to the government's commitment to ensuring that the 2030 World Cup brings lasting benefits to the Moroccan economy.
Morocco's World Cup gambit looks to create new avenues for work, business, tourism, crafts, and transport. This means its impact will be felt long after the tournament itself has ended, Lekjaa stressed. Tags: FIFA World Cup 2030world bankworld cup 2030

US Trade Commission launches second review in Morocco phosphate fertilizer case

The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) has announced it will conduct a second court-ordered remand review in the countervailing duty case involving phosphate fertilizer imports from Morocco, reads a Federal Register document published on Tuesday. This follows an April 22, 2025 ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade, which again asked the Commission to better justify its finding that Moroccan and Russian imports harmed the U.S. domestic industry. The case dates back to March 2021, when the USITC first ruled that phosphate fertilizers from Morocco and Russia materially injured American producers. Morocco's OCP Group challenged the decision in court. Although the Commission reaffirmed its findings in January 2024 after a first remand, the court has now ordered a second review, with no new evidence allowed. Only parties that participated in both the original investigation and the appeal, including OCP, may submit written comments. The deadline for submissions is June 20, 2025.

Morocco opens probe after hacker group claims breach of judicial website

Following claims by a hacker group reportedly based in Algeria that it breached the Ministry of Justice's IT systems and published two letterheaded screenshots from the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ), the King's Public Prosecutor at the Rabat Court of Appeal ordered on Tuesday the opening of a judicial investigation into reports of a cyberattack targeting the Council's website. In a statement, the Prosecutor confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the circulation of two administrative documents allegedly linked to the Council. The communiqué also noted that the case has been entrusted to the National Judicial Police Brigade. The breach, claimed by the group JabaRoot, was announced on Sunday. In a message posted on its Telegram channel, the group said it had obtained «very sensitive» data concerning Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi and the broader Moroccan judiciary. Just a week earlier, JabaRoot claimed responsibility for hacking Tawtik, the platform used to digitize notarial procedures in Morocco. The group published files and documents allegedly involving political figures in notarial transactions, raising significant alarm. Moroccan authorities have not yet issued an official response to the latest attack. While the authenticity of the leaked documents remains unverified, the growing wave of cyber intrusions is raising serious concerns about the security of Morocco's critical digital infrastructure.

ONE Fight Night 32: Elmehdi El Jamari Loses to Aliff in World Title Challenge Bid

Casablanca – Moroccan Muay Thai star Elmehdi El Jamari suffered a disappointing loss in a pivotal Muay Thai bout at ONE Championship show ONE Fight Night 32. Both men traded low kicks in the opening moments of the strawweight Muay Thai contest before El Jamari struck with a left punch as Aliff continuously targeted his Moroccan counterpart's body with vicious kicks. In the second round, El Jamari threw a boxing combination ending with a left hook, but Aliff kept on hitting his Moroccan's now-bruised left midsection with kicks and knee strikes, while using his seven-centimeter height advantage to evade the Moroccan's punches. With El Jamari trailing at the start of the third and final round, he tried to close the distance and search for openings for his dangerous boxing combinations, but Aliff used his quick movements and strength to keep the Moroccan fighter at bay. With El Jamari incapable of landing major strikes, Aliff picked up a unanimous decision win inside Bangkok's iconic Lumpinee Stadium. The gold medalist at the Southeast Asia Games and the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) now boasts wins over both Elmehdi and his brother and fellow ONE athlete Zakaria, whom he had knocked out back in August 2024. The win improves Aliff's overall professional record to 61-9 and grants the 21-year-old Malaysian-Thai fighter a title shot against veteran and two-sport world champion Prajanchai PK Saenchai for the latter's ONE Strawweight Muay Thai world title. Meanwhile, El Jamari suffered only the second defeat of his professional career and sees his overall record drop to 27-2. The 27-year-old Moroccan, who trains under Hamza Ostora at Ostora Fighters World in Spain, had opened his ONE Championship account with an impressive first-round knockout victory against Thailand's Thongpoon PK Saenchai in April. A former WBC Muay Thai world champion, El Jamari is a seven-time Morocco Muay Thai champion who had also picked up the Arab and Africa Muay Thai titles twice each.
